When you talk about it's paintwork missing do you mean the cassette unit? - i am new to CPC's in general having owned a Spectrum in the 80's so i don't know what Pro-users look for when buying off the likes of eBay which may explain why i only paid £25 for mine but had to fight a bit harder for my 6128 which was ironic as the 464 turned out working from the get go but the 6128 took some persuading.

My response was sarcastic. I'd easily pay £25 for the listing that I was refering to.
For £400, the machine better be in pristine condition and come with a cure for cancer!

I guess i meant someone who has used CPC's since they were released and who knows what to look for in tearms of picking up a decent CPC
Which i do not class myself as i have just started getting to know the machine.

Well basically in recent years there's been a ridiculous spike increase in old machines, most of them really not worth the asking price. I see people selling tatty old boxes to "add value to your machine", and that's beyond wrong and it's making the retro community fucking miserable lately. Then you've "untested", and I use this term very loosely as it's usually shit found in an attic or a skip and most likely faulty, and know full well it doesn't work but will sell anyway.
There's a certain amount I'll pay for an Amstrad or any other machine with a few games bundled in cos I know I'll probably have to fork out extra for additional repair and in some cases shipping. A CPC472 as rare as it is, really isn't worth that much for an extra 8k of ram that isn't actually usable so anyone who would spend more than £100 (and that's pushing it), has Rocks for brains as far as I'm concerned!

What's the real value of the machines? Some people seem to sell 6128 for silly amounts and even chancers are listing 464 for high amounts. There is a seller on ebay who seems to list 6128+ for close to 300 without monitor claiming to have refurbished them, I don't really know what that means other than cleaning and applying a new belt.
I actually enjoy repairing things to an extent but i bought a "working" 464 but when i tested it, it didn't work. Then i put a fuse in the plug and it did. I contacted the seller asking why there was no fuss and they didn't respond, so they obviously thought it was bust but sold it as working.

The other sad thing i have seen more on the ZX Spectrum & C64 eBay scene is machines being broken down to base components. It's like the whole of eBay has become overrun with business and not single people selling their old kit.
The machines i have bought off eBay have been a dissapointment of late the CPC464 sold as untested i had to invest in a new 5V PSU & SCART on the offchance it would work and i was pleased when it fired up. The 6128 was sold as should work as working when stored but there is no way it was tested before shipping so it took some work to get it fixed. My old +2A Spectrum was sold a working but the PSU was dogy and caused a lot of noise so i ended up buying a new +2/3 PSU from Germany.
I was gutted when i thought i had broken the 464 when i knocked my DDI-3 interface and the screen went black but it still worked and i'm more careful. I try to look after them when they get here but it is becoming more difficult. I try to fix then and keep them going but my skills are basic at best but i do find the whole eBay thing becoming quite depressing.
I ditched eBay a long time ago and went on Facebook groups. I would have recommended Retro For Sale but that's getting as bad as eBay and the moderators don't give a flying fuck, in fact they put the blame on you for calling ridiculous prices in the first place. I'm about to leave it.
Amstrad For Sale is worth checking. And if you want colour clash, there's Sinclair For Sale too.
You can still get bargains on Ebay. Picked up a 464 for 15 quid a few months ago for a feature for the channel. Works perfectly.
Thing is are you prepared to take a punt on something that says 'untested'. Because CPC's aren't like Commodore Plus 4's which can be listed as 'tested' but then fail when they arrive (like mine did). They are generally pretty solid and are just 'untested' because people don't know how to work them. The two 464's I've picked up off Ebay were both untested and are fine as was my German 6128. New belts needed granted but other than that, fine.
I've had less joy with 'untested' Spectrum's but that again is down to design and the fact kiddies messed around with them. Usually blown RAM due to the the wrong PSU being used. +2a's and +3's are better due to different PSU.
In terms of 8 bits, I'd always take a punt on an untested Amstrad, Acorn or MSX. A Sinclair or Commodore is risk. And you lot know how much stuff I pick up for the channel (have my eye on something this weekend, again untested and cheap).

We've all been there even back on the day. Edge connectors are a terrible way to interface to a machine. Industrial contact cleaner does help though.
This is why I keep meaning to make my German 6128 the 'daily driver' as it has Centronics connectors and I can plug and replug to my hearts content.

QuoteMötley Crüe...
An Ultimate Classic Rock video on the band quotes Vince Neil as saying: "When we came up with the name, we didn't even know what umlauts were. We were drinking Lowenbrau and when we decided to call ourselves Motley Crue, we put some umlauts in there because we thought it made us look European.
"We had no idea that it was a pronunciation thing. When we finally went to Germany, the crowds were chanting 'Mutley Cruh, Mutley Cruh. We couldn't figure out why the fuck they were doing that."

That is not just any box, it is vintage, brown and has the words amstrad and cpc6128 on the side, that has got to make it worth 20 quid of anyone's money, an absolute bargain in my eyes ;)

Would boxing your old 6128 add £20 to the resale value? Maybe...
I suppose I never consider resale value because I couldn't bare to part with my CPC ;D

I really hate pricks who sell boxes to "add value" to their unit.
They can all die in a fire, along with the idiots who buy them.
Sucked the life right out of scene completely.
Regarding that box: how much do you want to bet that he's going to ship it as-is, and not in another box? :D

Well to be exact, only one person out of the few billion on this planet think it's worth that much.
Bryce.
And I would assume it is likely to remain so. Any idea what the real value of this would be?
The original price according to the photo in the listing was 800DM = €400, but the real value today is whatever some idiot is willing to pay for it.
Bryce.
I notice that there are some very high priced 6128+ and 464+ still on the ebay and the seller recently sold a 6128+ for £299 and that didn't appear to include a PSU or scart cable. At these sorts of prices maybe Amstrad should restart manufacturing them.

Without being able to see full details of the bidder, I would suspect its either a shill bidder or someone just pissing about - especially on the drive. I've been "victim" of bidders who unregister after pushing an auction to silly limits.

Unfortunately ebay removed ability to track shill bidding which i guess they don't care about as the more an item sells for the more money they make

As requested by the Seller I have removed this post.
It's a bit odd, if what I'm seeing is correct then both bidders involved have very high feedback ratings (1000+).
So it may well become available again then, it does seem astronmically high. It should be possible to cancel a bid "entered the wrong amount" but then best not get involved of the high bidders ultimately pulls out and doesn't pay up.

Here is the English translation for that 'rare box'.
QuoteGood condition of this rare Amstrad CTM 644 screen packaging cardboard (Full Color Display Unit Monitor model CTM644)
Prototype model for marketing in Europe.
Light Green Writing
Box only Light green.
Condition: Used
42 cm high
43 cm / 44.5 cm
Traces of adhesive, some impacts and tears (see photos)
International shipping possible.
So they are even indicating that it is a rare prototype box ??
The only reason I can assume they think it is rare is because the print is in Green and not the Red of the English box,
As far as I am aware, the boxes were colour coded to regions, so I don't believe there is anything rare about this box.
I know for sure, that the print on the Australian delivered CTM boxes was Blue.
Even the Australian delivered PCW8256/8512 boxs are printed in Blue (where again the English is Red).
So I would think Green is probably normal for France/Europe.
And also, looking at the pictures, there are no poly inserts, and none mentioned in the text.
Maybe this was a simple matter of the decimal point being missed...
surely 2.00 Euro was intended...
or maybe, possibly stretch it to 20.00 Euro if indeed it is a rare prototype cardboard box :picard: ;D

This is probably a good demonstration in what is wrong in ebay and the retro scene, someone selling a box with a value of 5 euro, for 200 euro. The box could be useful for sending a monitor through the post but it's a box not some sort of archeological treasure. But ebay provides a market to sell stuff and some will try to profit madly from it. I read something similar on an amiga forum where there is a particular user on ebay selling amiga stuff for thousands of euros.
I disagree with the part of "sending a monitor through the post". It does have its own value and I'd certainly like to have one. 200 euros? FFS no, but on the other hand it's not just a box.
That reminded me of the time I bought an MP3 tuner, I think, which was almost NOS in its original box. The fucker who sold it to me posted it just in that box which, of course, went through quite a bit. Fucker.
Hi Gryzor,
You swearing - that's unusual - must have really pissed you off.
Anyway, you're post made remember that I was going to send off to you (last year) an MP3 tuner that was lying in the "Amstrad cupboard from Hell" but unfortunately it got lost amongst all the other stuff I was posting at that time.
Can you still use it?
Cheers,
Peter
PS
Regarding the cardboard box - everyone here is missing the point - the seller is behaving responsibly by "recycling" it :D
I have a GT64 box in perfect condition and with the original undamaged polys. I must be rich!!! Now where did I put that Ferrari catalogue....
Bryce.
@ComSoft6128 (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2226) :Yeah, that was a bad experience especially since the mp3 itself was in a bad condition... :( If I recall correctly I did get it to work for a bit, but I mostly wanted the box :D
If you still have it then yes I'd love to have it :) And if you've got a box to recyle I'll take care of that as well :D :D
@Bryce (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=225) : can you put box the box in a box for me please?
Cool,
I'll post it off in about a week to ten days. No original box I'm afraid. :(
It is in good condition and was working last time it was used which was about 7 years ago.

Peter

Anyone need a replacement gx4000 burning rubber cartridge? Yours for a bargain £160.50. The seller has generously included free postage.

I've never seen that Very Rare edition, and sadly he does not even ship to France.
Too bad I can't add it next to my Extremely Rare (tm) burnin' rubber cartridge version.
Free postage is probably the 0.50 in the price 😁
Well it probably would have been 200 if he had gone to the bother of cleaning it first, so I'd say Bargain! go for it!.
Bryce.
Why did this game sell for so much money, its frankly quite rubbish and isn't that rare.

Oh wow. Though quality doesn't have much to do with price :)
I'm relatively new to Ebay so does "Ended" actually mean someone paid that price, or did the seller just end the auction when they realized no one was going to cough up that outrageous amount?
I think it means someone bought it, otherwise it says "not available" or something...

It was definitely sold for that price, there were 24 bidders. It could only be ended without a sale if it had zero bidders or ebay says "Auction ended by seller" (for which you have to give reasons).
Bryce.
Cheers,
For that kind of money I would expect a 6128 Plus to go with the cart!
All this retro stuff seems to be getting more expensive. Prices of gx4000 have been rising recently too they all seem to be plus 100 now. I would really like a copy of robocop 2 and switch blade but switch blade seems to be outrageously priced with a few listed for 80 quid. Robocop 2 isn't much better.
Ridiculous money being paid these days...and with the added bonus...
QuoteThe cartridge has not been tested and we provide no warranty if faulty. We don't accept returns.

As a registered business seller I think distance selling rules apply and one could reasonably expect it to work if described as very good in the descriptive and it turns out not to actually work even if the seller puts a disclaimer to say it may not work. For nearly 300 quid I really hope for the buyer it works. It's a shame prices are so high as I would quite like a few more genuine cartridges but I guess it's supply and demand, with the demand cleanly outstripping the supply.
Saw this on the bay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184330881703
Looks very pricey considering the games aren't original boxed copies.

Sometimes when you copy/paste formatted text it ends up like this - just edit your message, select all the text and remove formatting using the second-to-last icon.

Maybe it's made from the unique, exceptionally rare and highly valuable metal, unobtainiumite.
If they go for those prices then maybe someone should start manufacturing them again :)

Yup, a million quid for an Apple 1.
I guess if you have extraordinary amounts of money and nothing else to spend it all on your might buy this old stuff. I presume all the guff about first computer etc is actually just background to the apple 1 and this is nothing extra special?
No, I think it's just an ordinary Apple 1.
We'll, there are only 63 in existence and they were built by Woz himself, so a million sounds about right...

The big problem here isn't the asking price, rather proving that it's one of the 63 originals. It's too easy to make a copy that would be almost impossible to tell apart from the originals, and with an asking price of $1.5M there's a lot of good reasons to put time into doing that.
Bryce.

Not that I have that kind of money, but I couldn't put anywhere near this value on what is to me little more than a boat anchor. I couldn't care less if Jesus made it (unless it gave me eternal life, health and happiness), let alone Woz. Even if I had a million spare I can think of much better ways to use money.
Imagine how many CPCs you could buy with that kind of money! Pimped up to the max, too! ;D
Google tells me there are 365 tech billionaires (one for each day of the year, strangely).

Of course it's worth that! He put the word "Rare" in the description! That automatically makes the item at least 10 times more expensive than reality. And adding *** or !!! either side of the word rare can cause an item to increase hundred-fold in price.
