Is Gryzor on vacation?

My mate who signed up about a week ago still haven't got access.
Do you need music for your Amstrad CPC game project?
Take a look at IndieGameMusic.com - that's where I put my tracks.

Bryce

I think he's away at the moment, but I think Markus can do this too?

Bryce.

* Using the old Amstrad Languages :D * And create my own ;)
* Incorporating the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

So the reply is simple:
In this forum is no user called "birk", in the wiki, too, there's no "birk".

Sheesh, can't a guy lounge on a beach? :D

Yes, I've been gone for a couple of weeks; apologies for not notifying before I left, lately I tend to be on the cautious side and NOT announce when my apartment will be vacant...

I created pending accounts yesterday and today; it's this anti-spam system we use where when a user signs up the account does not exist but is put in a byline until it is approved... Maybe I should disable it and see how spamming goes...

PS I saw you mentioning him in the eBay thread; was his account for the forum? Because forum accounts don't need to be confirmed and are created automatically...

I hope you stay well and interested Amstrad and the cpcwiki for many years to come. But in the case of an acciendent (God forbid), do you have contacts  for someone else that has full access and want to take over? I have bad memories of CPCzone ended and the way Malc used the site in later years. I have a completly different feeling for how you are running this wiki, but still it is smart to have a backup plan if something happens

Gryzor

Hello ivarf,

This has been covered before but it doesn't matter, I'm always glad to take the chance and repeat it.

We're talking about a dead man's switch here :)

Yes, there is another person who has all the details for the server and is helping even now though he doesn't participate in the community.

Offsite backups are also taken every two to three days (would be daily, but I have to do it manually through a virtual machine since I don't run Linux as my main system). Database backups are done daily.

In the past I offered to give the complete server archive to anyone who'd ask (well, it's over 30GBs now), precisely to spread the data (and also because I don't feel I own it), but then again noone asked for it - noone except for Kangaroo, that is, who wanted to just copy the data and launch a copy of the wiki on his own.

So I'm pretty confident that the site is pretty safe in the sad eventuality of a gruesome and sudden death. Now the issue is this: the person who has access to the server does not participate in the community, as I said. This is pretty convenient and nice, for, even though I trust him 100%, there's not a chance of him getting involved in politics etc as has happened in the past

However the question that this raises is, he's got server and systems access, but then what? Somebody has to take over the project. And how would we deal with it - I mean with the "who" question? In the pas I've asked for people to co-admin with me, mainly -precisely- because of the fact that I wanted this to be a bit more open. But nobody volunteered. So there's an empty slot in the process there...

Any suggestions, more than welcome.

Bryce

Ah forget the Wiki, who gets your hardware collection if you bite the dust? :D

Well, I guess that, apart from the Vectrex and the arcade cab they'll go to the first person rummaging the trash under our apartment :D

A bit more serious: I had a friend who had a nice little collection of retro stuff, mainly Amiga-related. He was killed driving his motorcycle a few years back, and his parents invited his friends to take anything we wanted from his room. No one could touch a thing... :(

@Gryzor: I expect it will be a few hours downtime then you will become a member of the undead zombi community and continue your activities for eternity???

Gryzor

That would be an alternative, yes, but seeing as zombies don't have much brains to begin with (and often get it shot at), Bryce would have to build a Z80 interface to drive me.

Ohhh can't wait for the Walking Dead to air again. Damn, October the 15th...

Bryce

No need. If zombies are brain-dead, then they're probably Commodore users anyway :D

Bryce.

Gryzor

So it would be a kind of undead... or spiritual? Like in the purgatory and stuff? Then I'd have to have an ectoplasm-to-Z80 interface (DMA FTW!), at least until I learn to manipulate objects.

Yeah, that is sadly whats likely is going to happen to most retrocollections if we don't do something ourselves with it before we move on

Good to here that it has been taken care of. I guess the community/forum could decide in common what next in the unlikely event, 50 years from now. Thanks for a great site!

I would have done the same :(

Bryce

I'll declare all of my hardware in my last will and testament, so that you guys don't have to feel bad about bagging it all :)

Bryce.

Gryzor

@ivarf: well, yes, I guess it has happened many times before - not only with retro computing hardware but with other collections as well. It's a pity, but indeed most of the things people collect don't mean a thing to those around them... One could donate the hardware to a local museum. Or maybe a relevant (local) site... Oh, and thanks for the kind words :)
@McKlain: you got to imagine where all that equipment left. I hope someone else found them of use...
@Bryce: dibs on the testing hardware!
