am wondering if the cpc wiki will be going on FB ???

Xyphoe

It would be a good idea to add at least a Page. Still not enough people know about the forum as the focus for CPC discussions.

A Group would be nice but it might take away some of the discussion from the forum which might not be a good thing.

I don't see the point for a FB page, but definitely not against it.

If I typed in Amstrad CPC into Google, CPCWiki is the 3rd (or 4th if you count the Images) Site to come up, after Amstrad CPC on Wikipedia & " You're NOT fired: The story of Amstrad's amazing CPC 464", but if I type in Amstrad into Google, CPCWiki appears on Page 2, 3rd Link Down after Amstrad ESP and Tim's Amstrad NC User's Site, though results may vary, which seems really unfortunate given the amount of traffic this site gets. The problem though is if someone types in CPC into google, I get all these results about Engineering, Cement works, a company which makes Radiator & Fuel Caps.  :o

So the problem I see is Google doesn't consider this a priority site if someone simply typed in Amstrad into the Search Engine, which is shocking. Some of those Computer Museums should move for this site.
* Using the old Amstrad Languages :D   * with the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

is it not the more you pay google these days is where you end up on the search pages ?

its quite possible that it might take away some discussion from here but there's always the possibility it could attract more users here and the FB site could be used to promote and illustrate what is happening on the cpcwiki.

i noticed that Xyphoe uses a similar method to promote his cpc / retro game vids

setting up a FB page is free afterall its well worth having a go.

i would imagine getting the stats of site traffic etc would tell you if it is working or not and if it doesn't work out or you're feeling it is taking away from this site you could always close the FB page down.

i was playing a FB app called PES a while ago and set up a page to interact with other users was quite good experience until KONAMI closed it down which was bizzare they had over 400,000 worldwide users and growing ..... so anyways hopefully if there were a cpcwiki FB it turns out to be a positive experience as well

maybe a poll would be good to see what cpcwiki users are thinking ?

Not sure, I have a small Turbo Pascal website with Generic and Amstrad specific programs on it. If I type in Turbo Pascal 3 specifically into Google my site it appears 8th on Page 1. If I just type in Turbo Pascal by itself, I got to Page 3 when I saw my site (again in 8th position).

I don't pay Google anything to have the site pop up there, but the site pays for itself through Advertising, so perhaps that's contributing??

The only amstrad fb page I know of is the 464 page and most people in there refer to cpcwiki all the time like most places on t'internet when talking about the cpc.

I don't know if a fb page is necessary or not but I do know that Gryzor should be proud of what he's accomplished.
cpcwiki is the place to go to for amstrad so maybe fb could help raise awareness and help it expand.

Fact is fb is where a lot go these days after google.

A few different issues here, and thanks everyone for your input (and kind words)!

-Getting on Facebook: sure, very easy to do and it could indeed gain some traction for the wiki. However, how many of us use it? What I mean is, comments, sharing and participation on the FB page will probably begin from us. But, whenever I've mentioned Facebook here in the past I've been tsk-tsk'ed to no end. We even had sharing buttons (Twitter and Facebook) present in every page but nobody ever used them (and then Bryce complained that the forum is breaking his ISP or something to that effect so I removed them :D ). So, would people actually participate and share? I might as well try it...

-Google results. That's a weird one. I know CPCWiki doesn't fare too well on Google, which is a mystery because it's got what Google wants: authority and content. Meaning, lots of links to it from other sites, biggest traffic and, of course, largest amount of data. At some point I did some SEO stuff on the site and the situation did improve a bit but I haven't dealt with it ever since and obviously it didn't go far. But I'd have guessed that the quality and popularity of the site itself would suffice to propel it to the top of Google's results. So if anyone's got any experience with SEO please do get in touch with me!

-Speaking of social stuff, engagement etc; I was thinking of doing a proper newsletter, with news from the site and highlighting interesting/important pieces of news or discussions. Probably on a monthly basis. Do you think it'd be terribly spammy if I sent it to all the email addresses in our database? Of course there'd be an unsubscribe link and all that, I just want to gauge interest. I think it would help bring inactive users back... thoughts?

I dont mind getting emails.... i would like being notified it would help me remember to visit the site just like your recent post on FB with the lonk to the gx4000 thread that made me come here and read the thread :)

A monthly newsletter would be good

Hum, when I type CPCWiki in Google (even when not logged in), the four first results are pages on cpcwiki.eu. The first two ones are:

Quote
    CPCWiki forum - Index
    CPCWiki forum - Index

CPCWiki - THE Amstrad CPC encyclopedia!
CPCWiki - THE Amstrad CPC encyclopedia!

This might have to to with search personalization, but if I launch a new firefox on a fresh account I have the same results.

Anyone can confirm ?
Had a CPC since 1985, currently software dev professional, including embedded systems.

I made in 2013 the first CPC cross-dev environment that auto-installs C compiler and tools: cpc-dev-tool-chain: a portable toolchain for C/ASM development targetting CPC, later forked into CPCTelera.

Here's what I get... (and no, I didn't manipulate it to show the MegaFlash page) :D

Yes that is correct, but I was talking typing in Amstrad into Google.  :)  Earlier this site was appearing on Page 3 or something when I just typed in Amstrad, now it seems to be coming up at the bottom of Page 1.

If I type in Amstrad+CPC, this site comes up second (after the Wikipedia page on the Amstrad CPC computer) and 3rd if you type in Amstrad CPC by itself. Annoying because a newspaper article regarding Alan Sugar titled Your Not Fired takes precedence  :(  With Quotation Marks "" this site fares no better than without the Quotations.

It also takes into account your country and browser language. If I open a private browsing window and do a search for amstrad cpc this is what I get (cpcwiki is on page 2):

When I type "amstrad cpc" in a private browsing firefox window from France, I get CPCWiki - THE Amstrad CPC encyclopedia! on page 2 (16th position from first page).
When I type "amstrad" instead, the first cpcwiki answer is CPCWiki forum - Index on page 9 (81st position from first page).

On "amstrad cpc", google.fr orders wikipedia then cpc-power, amstradtoday.com, priceminister, mo5.com, amstrad.cpc.free.fr, amstrad.eu gametronik.com, lemonde.fr, planetemu.net x2, phenixinformatique.free.fr, mondemul.net all sites written in french. The language should be enough to explain.

The good news is: cpcwiki.eu is the first non-french-language site when querying "amstrad cpc" on google.fr .
