Can't get Batman Forever transferred to disk

I've been trying to transfer the Batman Forever demo on 3" disks by transferring the dsk images first on 3,5" disk and copying that with Disckit. The image appears to transfer ok but when I try to copy, it fails on read errors. Tried with another 3,5" disk. I copied a few games earlier and they were ok. I've been using CPCDiskXP to write the images.

Can you help me with this?

don't use disckit, it can't handle copy protections or special disc formats. batman uses a special disc format.

transfer discology or some other better copier.

use that to copy the disk from 3.5" to 3"... OR

I think the demo can be run from drive B so you don't need to transfer it to 3" anyway.

Oddly, I'm having problems with Batman Forever too.
I cannot get it to read in my CPC at all.

I've been using CPCDiskXP to write it to disk. I've tested with the single disk image and with the split images. (4 images)
Other disks write perfectly, I'm using Windows XP, CPCDiskXP and DSDD 3.5" floppy disks (not HD ones)

Every time I write the disc, all I get is read errors when trying to read it back on the CPC.

|CPM gives me a Drive A: read fail, so does a CAT or |DIR

Is the copy I've got corrupt? Where can I download a working set of disk images?

I've only run the demo from a 3.5" disc. The way I did it was to get the 3.5" drive to think it's drive A. The way to do this is to connect pins 11 and 12 on the 3.5" floppy cable. However, you have to do this after the machine powers up (if you do it before you turn the machine on, both the internal and external drives try acting as one - not good) or if you always want it to be drive A and don't mind disabling the 3" drive you can simply slip open the machine and remove the ribbon cable from the internal drive.

I'll go in to a bit more detail.
I've written Batman Forever to 3.5" and set my 3.5" drive to be A: (I always run like this anyway, I tend not to use 3" discs much now) - I still cannot get it to run. I just get a corrupt disc after writing it (although if I read the disc back, it's matches the original image in CPCDiscXP) - other discs write perfectly, this is the only one I'm having problems with.

for the 3.5" disc version are you copying both sides AND 80 tracks? It may need 83 not sure.

Yes, I'm writing both sides, and using 80 tracks (I think) - I'll try with 83 and see if that helps.

Hmm that's really odd because I used CPCDiskXP to make me with 80 tracks and it was fine. You are using the Parados ROM on the CPC aren't you..? It obviously won't work with Amsdos.

Must be a corrupt image, I re-downloaded it and re-wrote it.
No, I'm not using ParaDOS at the moment :( Still only AMSDOS - I take it that the demo has it's own filesystem that kicks in when running (like the Oriion Prime game does)

I've just had another look at the download site for the demo: http://www.scene.org/file.php?file=%2Fparties%2F2011%2Fforever11%2Fcpc%2Fbatman_forever_%28batman_group%29.zip&fileinfo and I think you might have been trying the disc image that contains the whole demo on one disc. That needs a ROM capable of reading this format like Parados so I suspect that's why it's not working for you. However it looks like you can write the demo to 3 x single sided discs wich Amsdos will be able to read but you will need to disc swap I'm afraid.

I'm not entirely sure but I think there is some special formatting involved when transferring Batman Forever to disc. Im fairly certain that it uses a similar scheme to Orion Prime, so I would recommend using the settings that were advised for Orion Prime when writing the disk. I'm sure that Orion Prime has instructions with an appropriate copy of CPCDskXP contained in the ZIP file you can download from the publisher's site. Unfortunately my GX4000 machine is not in service right now as its being adapted for my Uber CPC project so I'm not setup for 3.5" disk access currently so I cant try writing the disk myself. Also I have never run the demo from anything other than my HxC SD card so I cant advise any further than that really except to say that as far as running the latest CPC releases, by far the easiest way is to invest in an HxC unit (Im assuming you don't have one) it may seem a little expensive but it really does earn its keep!  ;D

One side note here, about the CPCDskXP. The user interface was a bit unusable as the UI was laid out so that I could not access all the buttons in the UI. I managed to do the basic disk transfer but that was it. Is it meant for XP as I'm using Win7?

Have to start thinking other ways of getting stuff on my 6128 as I have a new motherboard waiting for installation into my PC and it no longer has floppy connector. Funny, I managed almost eight years without an internal floppy and now when finally needed one, the motherboard manufacturers decide to drop it.:/

N00b question. I have the demo on three 3,5" disks. How do I run it as cat shows no files on disk even though it's full?

Thanks, Arnoldemu!

The demo starts to load but all I get is a message that says "CRTC Type 2 not supported".
It seems my 6128 has the only CRTC type that is not supported.  :'(  Oh well.

EDIT:
Nevertheless, it would seem that it is possible to run the demo from 3,5" disk, while the drive is set to B. At least it attempts to run it before I hit the CRTC type snag.

Gryzor

Good for you :) Can someone upload the photo here? Dropbox not allowed at work...

Gryzor

Salora? Wow. This must have been the best thing to be shown on it :)

Thanks for upping :)

protek

I have to say that the Salora is the best 5 € I've ever spent on. It has a separate RGB mode for scart so you don't have to provide the correct voltage into the blanking pin and it switches automatically over to RGB, when you turn your computer on. Absolutely ideal for Amstrad, Spectrum +2/+3 and Atari ST.

Gryzor

€5? Damn, that's better than the price Sugar got for his GTs! Respect.
