Title: Marco Vieth Overscan Slideshow - YouTube video
Post by: ComSoft6128 on 20:42, 28 April 19
Lovely 28 screen black and white slideshow, programmed by German coder Marco Vieth who also wrote the original CPCemu.
From the WACCI PD library - 1992/93.
I recommend using 4K video downloader (or similar) to download the MP4 to appreciate it on a large screen television.
This slideshow is the third in a series of five but as it contains images from slideshows 1 and 2 I believe it is a "best of" type compilation taking advantage of the much larger RomDos D20 (792K) 3.5" disks then available.

The slideshows run on both the 6128 and the 6128 Plus.
The video starts by cataloguing the disk (0K free!) and then listing the BASIC loader - the overscan screen files range from 10K to 26K in size. Personal favourite - the death mask of Tutankhamun. Many (all?) of the fantasy scans are by the Peruvian artist Boris Vallejo.

What about a mod 1 overscan interlaced (384x544) by Dadman : https://youtu.be/Hj1YssyLx5s (https://youtu.be/Hj1YssyLx5s) and on his blog : http://ladrillopixeles.blogspot.com/2011/04/entrelazando-que-es-gerundio-amstrad.html (http://ladrillopixeles.blogspot.com/2011/04/entrelazando-que-es-gerundio-amstrad.html)

Wow, these collections are still around?
The fantasy pictures are still looking good.
Good to know that they are real art from Boris Vallejo.
Had credited him, if I had known.

Hi Marco,

I came back to my CPC and discs/disks two years ago after storing everything away for nearly two decades. It was a pleasant surprise to find that most of the data is still viable.
Your slideshow was one of the first things I looked at - and it still worked!

Just to let you know, the overscan slideshow and four or five other programs were left running constantly when I helped with the WACCI stand at the All Format Computer Shows in Glasgow and Edinburgh in the early to mid nineties.
Along with one or two demos the slideshow helped to show off what the CPC could really do when pushed a little. ;D

Cheers,

Peter

Hi @mv (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3387) ,

Looking at the catalogue of the disk shows that most of the screen files have a filetype of .SCN but I also see six files (which are not displayed) with the filetype .LCN - are these also screen files of some kind?

I know it was a long time ago so if memories are vague I completely understand - I have many 30 year old files here that I can't remember at all.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter,
yes, it is a long time ago and I can not remember, why I used LCN. I am still trying to find the stuff in my archive. In any case, these LCN files are also compressed screens. I used them for oshow 1-3. For oshow 4-5 I used SCN. For SCN I found the converter I used: pbm2scn. Do you think that it could be of interest?
Marco

Hi Marco,

Yes, I think it would be of interest. There are quite a few programmers lurking here that might like to see the tools used back then in the creation of the slideshows ;D

From my perspective as a user, if you gave an overview of how the slideshows were made I personally would find that interesting - the first time I saw the slideshow was one of those rare "WTF?" "How is this done?" CPC moments that I remember.

Cheers,

Peter
