Cool; I've never seen this slideshow before! 8) It's not available online anywhere as far as I can tell. Maybe you or @Maniac could dump it for us all to enjoy?

Thanks @Nich . I dumped this a few days ago so that @ComSoft6128 could put this video together. It's available here https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/demos/the-essential-amiga-grafix-selection

Thanks a lot! I don't know how I missed that post containing the disc image. :-[

Hi @Maniac ,

CAT brings up the "RUN DISC" message, so I tried Parados to have a peek at the disc but no joy with that - "Drive B: read fail" and then the Nirvana Rom (video below).

So a couple of questions:

Is the disc a protected format?
What tools were used for the file conversions?
Nirvana shows 62 files on side A so I'm assuming a BASIC loader and a music file + 30 screen and 30 palette files - is this correct?

Cheers,

Peter

Hi @ComSoft6128

Not a protected format in the truest sense of the term no. The disc format is based on the MS800 format by Phil Craven (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/MS800) where the first track only is a standard AMSDOS Data format that contains the boot code only that then can read the remaining tracks. The only other thing on that track is the special directory which looks in that video like a load of files but is actually all of the control codes and hidden comments in the directory.

Once the boot code has loaded it can read the remaining tracks of the disc which total 41 with each one having an additional sector providing more space per side.

If I recall correctly (all the above is from memory after 25 years and making the image in the last week) this slideshow made extensive use of S-DAF (https://cpcrulez.fr/applications_disc-S-DAF.htm) to compress and link the files. I think I had a boot file I used in order copy files and did this when putting this together. Not sure where that is at the moment but sure I have it somewhere.

However if anyone wanted to copy the data to an M4 for example it may not work as the files created by S-DAF don't seem to work on the M4. The disks format also doesn't seem to work with newer versions of ParaDOS - I use v1.2+ and the boot code just resets the machine unless I revert to version 1.1.
