EDIT: No-one has mentioned the CATart on Wake Up! yet! It seems to work 99.9% on both CPC464 and CPC6128 and even works on all MODEs! I have one question, though; why is Transparent Mode activated? I can't find anything overlapping on the ASCII art, so it seems strange activating it!

It does work on every CPC indeed! When I finished with the design, I faced several projects implementing it with CATaclysme utility... And even more frustrating was the fact that a lot of characters are displayed differently in French-ROM CPCs... After correcting it with alternate chars in order to be displayed in every CPC, I was out of characters!!! :P
So, the master of CATarts, commonly known as Supersly, helped us to have a fine working CATart! Regarding your question, I cannot give you a robust answer - better contact Sylvestre!

I've seen already the compo videos (not the individual ones), but when the demo starts the ambient sound is silenced. Do you think that you can upload your videos to youtube?
have you seen also this?

I don't know this person, I guess the question will remain a mystery.

Also, do you know why Reed's music is 26Kb in length? Does he use samples in the tune? Is it 150Hz? I presume it's packed as well, so does it only work on 128k machines? Wow! It must be one of the biggest released tunes on CPC!

He is roaming around this forum as well under the nickname GFXOR! And there is also a dedicated page about CATarts in his site here!

Although it is in French, I think you will figure things out with a good translator... I am working on a translation for these CATart pages, but I am a bit slow...

You should ask Krusty - he helped Reed with his music ;)

McKlain

I'm gonna guess that the music is in YM format and then everything is packed in a single binary file.

voXfReaX

Hi all,

After some research, I returned bringing some answers to you ;)

Krusty has not an active account here, so here are some of his answers:
1. For Reed's music: The music is not compressed with arkos tracker player.
2. For the catart: "I suspect the strange thing is to hide supersly's signature (look inside the disc with winape disc editor)"

3. For the 4k: "I am a god, that's all ;) No no, the key is a good cruncher and coding in a way which crunches very well... Data structures must crunch well too".

Krusty's words in a voxfreax's post... what a collaborative effort :D

In the interest of after-party polish and presentation, here's a BITBuster-packed version of Reed's Hyperdragon (attached below).

Cute. I personally use the first 3 (STC) or 4 (JTMS) available characters of the first filename to hide my CATart signature(s) so it appears just after the "Drive A: user 0" and before the #04 #0x (MODE command). If the update is slow enough, you can just about read it before the screen clears, otherwise the user is happily ignorant of its existence.

Yes, I can see how Exomiser is used to unpack from 8000 to 0200 and then the graphic data is manipulated; up to around &0384 where the intro starts proper. Nice use of the base 64k! It's a shame that people have to use 128k for big CPC demos when the base-kit has such greater (and more interesting) limitations that require some impressive coding... that only real coders would recognise!

Thank-you, voXfReaX, for being the liason between us mortals and the "Programming Gods".

You are welcome man! I really hope that there is not something aggressive in your latest sentence in the quotation above though... Because, when I first read it, it sounded a bit like a 'war-starting' message... Hope that I am wrong and there is peace in the kingdom of CPC ;)

That was not my intention, but I can see how it could be mis-interpreted. For this I apologise to you for my transgression and I hope to be clearer with my posts in future (or at least, less ambiguous)!

Great! Happy to read these words! :)

I gave a try at repaletting...

As I told at push N pop, the white background is a bit violent for tired eyes in a dark room on a giant screen while beer and sleepless nights take a large fee.

MacDeath

Ok, I admit I am spamming this one...

To be "unfair" (so... fair... or partially fair... or pro CPC...)

I don't like the way it goes.

CPC produtions are released at a up to the day rythm... I mean, you guys at retro conventions, have the internet accesss.
We know "we" (CPC pixels bending scums) are willing to work fast (just see the "mocks ups sections" at CPC rulez and so on) and well... no real time events yet...

So, "CPC" prods comes to be "only" "3rd"...

(this make for a lot of """...)

Ok some CPC guys want to do it the "old way"'.
they do it on real CPCs...

But.

Graphics and sound are...
Graphics : faster and easier to do on a modern setting.

sounds ?
Well, we share the Same AY with : MSX1, Speccy128 (so extended speccy), CPC of course, Sega Master System (sort of), Atari ST (also sort of), Oric Atmos, and many more...

Seriously...

No way an "unfinished" production as Wake up could make it into the event !

And even if so, it is not big deal to manage this betterly...

(yeay, once more I drunk a lotta beers/cervezas... and I suis too much talkative...)

OK; this is getting a bit ridiculous by just re-coloring graphics and screens made by others, and try to defend your opinion in any cost...

In Benediction, we care more of how our demos will look on the real thing and NOT on the emulators. We use our real machines daily and we do not just launch a whichever emulator and just care solely for this. It's a pity to read for a designer that graphics are "faster and easier to do on a modern setting", and not mention anywhere of the result on a CTM644.

Unfinished?!?! Are you serious? You have to understand first that Wake Up! expresses OUR way and this is the result we wanted to have. I guess now, we have to wait for a FINISHED production made by you, since you talk too much...

And now an advice: stop just recoloring work made by others and show what you've got... if you got any...

Didn't wanted to anger you.

Quotewe care more of how our demos will look on the real thing and NOT on the emulators.
The problem with Exin's graphic is that it is still loking unfinished on a real CPC.

I don't understand, his other past works looks nice and more polished.
