Hello from Revision!
We finally managed to release our Wake up! demo.
Feel free to find it here: http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=59073 (http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=59073)
..and do not forget that voting for/against us doesn't cost you something ;)
Hope you enjoy it!

Cool demo!
And great music!!!

Very nice demo! Brilliant music by McKlain and DMA-SC! Some interesting palette choices; really using the whole spectrum of available colours there! However, now that you guys have finally finished (and officially released) WAKE UP, is there any chance of us seeing a polished BLOC US at some point?
Anyway! WAKE UP 100% should win, though it's a close thing between this and that amazing GBC demo (Cenotaph by Dual Crew Shining). The music on that demo was almost as good as Reed's OLDSKOOL EXECUTABLE MUSIC entry! Wonderful stuff!
Again, top job! And... ... AMSTRAD CONTINUES!
Damn cool work!!!
First of all, thank you all for your positive feedback on our demo. It's nice to find out that you enjoy it, since you are also a part of the scene! :)
I do not know whether we'll win or not, but for sure CPC is much more famous than it was before Revision. I do not know if there will be any newcomers, but there are a lot of people asking information about our machine! Even the room, during the speech of Krusty in the seminar, was full with people!

Although it's a bit early at the moment to discuss this topic, and since we prefer not to give promises that might not be fulfilled, there has been a long conversation between me and Krusty in order to decide whether we will polish Bloc Us or not! The good news is that we both intend to work on and polish it sometime... However, you know how it is... When you publish a production, even if it's unpolished due to the deadline submission for example, you kinda do not wanna return back to it and just do something else... So, let me comment that perhaps there will be a newer release of BU sometime in the (near or not) future ;)
In any case, and in order to keep your eyes in the Revision stream-channel, I'd say to check the 4k Oldschool compo, starting at 23.00 GMT+1. ! BND all the way to the top!

Great effect, very nice transitional effects, and a good overall effort. Especially the first few effects did a good impression. The picture of the girl in the bed was nice and had me laugh out loud! :) The credits effect was done well, and I can't remember that it's been done before.

There is just one demo that could compete, and that is the GBC demo. I'd say Wake Up! beats it; the C64 demos do not come even close - also because the C64 effects had been done before and better. And the Amiga demo was bland (though well executed).
krusty did well, although 8 minutes maximum is far too little time. There's need for a one hour presentation to give the crowds a hint of what is possible to do.

Happy to read that you enjoyed our demo so much! It's really motivating to read these words by another CPC scener! As for the girls that we had in our demo, we thought that we have to show as many boobs as we can in order to have chances to win in the compo :)

Great work by the Benediction guys here. Definitely a great demo and good for raising interest in CPC - there were lots of people at Revision who know little about the CPC and it got a good reception and Krusty's presentation giving an overview of the CPC was quite well attended. :)

I know that Nyancat has a lot of fans in this forum, but you know that we hate it! So, we decided to burn it in a small 4k!

PS. Reed's music was indeed amazing!
I saw it live, really amazing 4K demo! ;D
Still, I made the music for the cpc nyancat version, so I have contradictory feelings about burning the pop tart cat ;D

Of course, there is nothing personal against the people who worked for the CPC or any other versions; we just wanted to let the people know that we hate this cat, and only the cat :)
You also composed the main music for WU! Perhaps this fact will make these contradictory feelings go away!
see you,

And best of luck for the voting tommorow ;)

Music was done by Factor6/Hooy Program, by the looks of things.
Nice tune by him!

I'm a cat lover. But you can burn the Nyan cat anyway you want, if it's on the sacred altar of CPC demos. ;)

burn kitty burn !!!! purge the unclean !
Destroy the herekitty...
Also... oh, another plasma...again...
Anyway, would be great to get many prizes for the Amstrad, and those are solid production too.
I mean, If you look at the Revision site... there is no mention about the Amstrad CPC, implying they don't even recognize it...
I though Germans had those... oh yeah, those were Schneiders...
Also Demoscene was so into Speccy and C64 during all those years that the CPC scene has to (re)conquer some sunny place after all those years.
Anyway, concenring the Wake Up demo...
the wave effect (at 2:58) seems to be in mode0... but could have been done in Mode1 (3 colours used on screen).
Why ?
Was it simpler to animate the wave with a lower resolution ?
You can kill the lovely kitty here :)

Not bad at all.
Intro :
got screwed by AtariVCS and Amiga... you can't argue with Amiga nor shitty old 2nd generation consoles... but still managed to defeat C64 and Speccy.
Demo :
Ok, Amiga first...
Boogietown by Ghostown & RNO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6dfLG7wowQ#)
they let Amiga compete with 8bits ? they really need that to win with old Amiga ?
I mean, ok Atari ST is not well represented but...
As I already told somewhere, the C64 demo is well done.
krawall deluxe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yUP6bd0k78#)
more graphics content, and some 3d effects... nothing original (I thing I already have seen all stuff from this demo) but well done.
benediction & Sector One - Wake Up! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJvE3oGtsgg#)
On the other hand, the Plasmas art first minute in wakeup looked a bit naked IMO, no frame, no sprites nor text nor whatever else...
Also the scrollzooming text at 1:28 is not in horizontal fullscreen.
ok there are already 3 zones, one of them being in fullscreen, but the text should be too or else it doesn't produce the real effect.
the last "waking up naked chick" is not bad, but too dithered to my tastes... but it must look better on a real CRT screen I guess.
Also the screen with fish sprites from the C64 demo is the kind of stuff that miss a bit IMO in this Amstrad Demo...
Good old game-like sprite demonstration.
Yeah we know the C64 is cheap trick on this due to Hardsprites...
But I think a good Winning demo should have something like this, not only "text sprites".
More animated "anime" stuff.
And appart from the scrolltext (zooming of course) there is no real try at horizontal scrolling stuff.
even the simple intro with the "Ready" part in the C64 demo gives quite some diversity in the matter.
So, Wake-up is good, has interesting contents and sweet graphics, but lacks a bit in the global composition or on the small details that could make the difference between a 2nd and a 3rd place.
Anyway, did you win something by being at 3rd place ?
That Amiga demo is poor, could be done better on CPC. And parts already have been done better on CPC :D
Yeah, I know, but... fancy Amiga... it even killed Jack Tramiel ... they show no respect...
I mean...
twice the resolution for twice the number of colours... (320x200x32 compared to 160x200x16... not even talking about palette)... and they manage to make an "average" demo.
Perhaps we should go the PLUS way to beat them with more ease.
Or even get some demo in Assembly language on Amstrad PC1640 (EGA, no sound card, final destination !!!)...

Not quite, Factor6 (on the left side) asked about he different CRTC versions. The other question - I think - came from the middle to right side.
Poor demo scene... Nothing original, always boring scroll text, tunnels and plasma...
Please, wake-up all !!!

Ah! Ok! I wasn't entirely sure. The sound was a little quiet for some reason during that second seminar session...
(★ CPCRULEZ ★ DEMOSCENE ★ PRODUCTIONS CPC PLUS (http://cpcrulez.fr/demoscene_prod_plus.htm))
@MacDeath: When they announced the winners, krusty went on stage. I think he received something, but the light and camera was too bad too look at them. Most probably it's a figurine of some sort.
If it's bronze, we could cast it in a fire and forge the swords for next year's party. Bronze beats gold and silver easily. ;)
Anyway, easier to critisize, harder to release something.
They released a quite good CPC production, could have been better on details and variety, but still, 3rd place and still being above some C64 and Speccy is still great.
Funny thing is... I looked at the Amiga demo and yes, it could have been almost done on a CPC.
the rotating buildings effect was done betterly in the Batman Demo.
Some "character pixels" effects are even do-able on speccy or in mode1 CPC...
And so on.
the main difference is that the plasmas also have some graphics around and above them... while WakeUp just displayed them with nothing else...
but the Amiga Demo had sweet well refined graphics anyway.
Funny or tragically, no Atari ST productions ?

It does work on every CPC indeed! When I finished with the design, I faced several projects implementing it with CATaclysme utility... And even more frustrating was the fact that a lot of characters are displayed differently in French-ROM CPCs... After correcting it with alternate chars in order to be displayed in every CPC, I was out of characters!!! :P

I don't know this person, I guess the question will remain a mystery.
Also, do you know why Reed's music is 26Kb in length? Does he use samples in the tune? Is it 150Hz? I presume it's packed as well, so does it only work on 128k machines? Wow! It must be one of the biggest released tunes on CPC!

Although it is in French, I think you will figure things out with a good translator... I am working on a translation for these CATart pages, but I am a bit slow...

You should ask Krusty - he helped Reed with his music ;)
I'm gonna guess that the music is in YM format and then everything is packed in a single binary file.

Krusty has not an active account here, so here are some of his answers:
1. For Reed's music: The music is not compressed with arkos tracker player.
2. For the catart: "I suspect the strange thing is to hide supersly's signature (look inside the disc with winape disc editor)"

Cute. I personally use the first 3 (STC) or 4 (JTMS) available characters of the first filename to hide my CATart signature(s) so it appears just after the "Drive A: user 0" and before the #04 #0x (MODE command). If the update is slow enough, you can just about read it before the screen clears, otherwise the user is happily ignorant of its existence.

Yes, I can see how Exomiser is used to unpack from 8000 to 0200 and then the graphic data is manipulated; up to around &0384 where the intro starts proper. Nice use of the base 64k! It's a shame that people have to use 128k for big CPC demos when the base-kit has such greater (and more interesting) limitations that require some impressive coding... that only real coders would recognise!
Thank-you,

Yes, I can see how Exomiser is used to unpack from 8000 to 0200 and then the graphic data is manipulated; up to around &0384 where the intro starts proper. Nice use of the base 64k! It's a shame that people have to use 128k for big CPC demos when the base-kit has such greater (and more interesting) limitations that require some impressive coding... that only real coders would recognise!
Thank-you, voXfReaX, for being the liason between us mortals and the "Programming Gods".
You are welcome man! I really hope that there is not something aggressive in your latest sentence in the quotation above though... Because, when I first read it, it sounded a bit like a 'war-starting' message... Hope that I am wrong and there is peace in the kingdom of CPC ;)
See you,

That was not my intention, but I can see how it could be mis-interpreted. For this I apologise to you for my transgression and I hope to be clearer with my posts in future (or at least, less ambiguous)!

Great! Happy to read these words! :)
I gave a try at repaletting...
As I told at push N pop, the white background is a bit violent for tired eyes in a dark room on a giant screen while beer and sleepless nights take a large fee.
Ok, I admit I am spamming this one...
To be "unfair" (so... fair... or partially fair... or pro CPC...)
I don't like the way it goes.
CPC produtions are released at a up to the day rythm... I mean, you guys at retro conventions, have the internet accesss.
We know "we" (CPC pixels bending scums) are willing to work fast (just see the "mocks ups sections" at CPC rulez and so on) and well... no real time events yet...
So, "CPC" prods comes to be "only" "3rd"...

Ok some CPC guys want to do it the "old way"'.

Well, we share the Same AY with : MSX1, Speccy128 (so extended speccy), CPC of course, Sega Master System (sort of), Atari ST (also sort of), Oric Atmos, and many more...
Seriously...
No way an "unfinished" production as Wake up could make it into the event !
And even if so, it is not big deal to manage this betterly...
(yeay, once more I drunk a lotta beers/cervezas... and I suis too much talkative...)
Your overhauled GFX are cool!
Much better now :)
Huh? What are those white spots on her? Cum stains? Bukake in CPC mode 0? :P

OK; this is getting a bit ridiculous by just re-coloring graphics and screens made by others, and try to defend your opinion in any cost...

In Benediction, we care more of how our demos will look on the real thing and NOT on the emulators. We use our real machines daily and we do not just launch a whichever emulator and just care solely for this. It's a pity to read for a designer that graphics are
"faster and easier to do on a modern setting", and not mention anywhere of the result on a CTM644.

Unfinished?!?! Are you serious? You have to understand first that Wake Up! expresses OUR way and this is the result we wanted to have. I guess now, we have to wait for a FINISHED production made by you, since you talk too much...
And now an advice: stop just recoloring work made by others and show what you've got... if you got any...

The problem with Exin's graphic is that it is still loking unfinished on a real CPC.
I don't understand, his other past works looks nice and more polished.

Your brocken link look like an unauthorized use of internet picture for saying that... hahaha. ;D

Sure, thats possible, that the GFX look better on a CTM.
But what's with those people who connect their real machine to a TFT or other modern device?
(My CTM is very clear and sharp for it's age... It also finds the original GFX a bit raw pixeled)
But thats just a personal opinion.
I don't want to moan around.
People, who wants a "better result" or whatever, are allowed to code the same demo with their own GFX ;)
This discussion is a bit ridiculous. If Exin is reading this he could very well be thinking "what are these people talking about? Can't they realise that the picture is pixeled EXACTLY LIKE I WANTED IT TO BE?" and laughing his guts out while having a beer.
It's called "personal style" guys. And it doesn't have go by any rules like "common aliazing" or "dithering". Monet would poke youur eyes out with his paint brush for this :P
But I bet that Exin is also thinking "damn, how come I didn't think of this" about the bukkake stuff :P

Just imagine the round of applause and cheering at the Revision Party at the sight of an image like that.
...After all, sex sells, right? Not sure about the entry conditions, but I'm pretty positive it'd score a few extra points :D

As I said, we are more worried of how the final result will look on the real thing; Sure, there are people who are using only an emulator or they have connected their CPC in a modern monitor. However, we cannot actually check the result on several different monitors, so we just go for the best result in the real CTM644, which I believe it's the best!
Regarding the '
raw-pixeling' of my graphics now, I guess that my monitor is a bit more used than yours and is not displaying everything so 'clean' anymore... In any case, your opinion is respected ;)

Exactly! There is no doubt that every creator of a demo wants his work to be appreciated by the rest of the sceners, but personally I am not going to organize a poll voting for the people in order to ask them who likes or not my graphics. The only persons that watch my work before a release are my teammates! It's my work and I always try to apply my personal touch in them. I believe Exin supports the same.
see you,

I just want to throw my 2p/2c in here. Wake Up is finished, by virtue of it being presented at Revision as a finished article.
It really doesn't matter either way if the graphics could be improved by recolouring or moving some pixels or whatever else. The demo was released as finished, and so that is by definition the finished demo. Its themes reflects the current state of the demoscene at that point in time (both CPC and cross platform) as well as what the authors had managed to achieve at that time since their last release.
Now, they might want to change things - there's always something you wish you'd done slightly differently, but the demoscene isn't about patching up already released demos to fix a few aesthetic issues - it's about innovating. If there's something that could be done better, you get that thing working better and put it in the next demo. If you delay releasing a demo to make it absolutely perfect, it just means there's one less demo in the world.
Personally, I think Wake Up was a great demo and perhaps more importantly, by releasing at Revision in front of a crowd of about 700 it got a lot of attention and as I was there, I can tell you that it was in fact very well received. It did raise the profile of the CPC. Nobody cares about whether the background is white or grey - they're looking at the feel for the demo in the context of the current state of the demoscene. It did it's job perfectly.

I agree 100%. Coding is about learning.
Each time I code something new, demo or game, I learn something new about how to make the whole production, and each time I try something new or know next time how to improve upon what I had done before.
Although I may know the theory behind something, or what may work, implementing it AND finishing it is where you find real knowledge.
EDIT: There is a point at which 1) a person gets fed up making the demo/game - for various reasons 2) you have to just release it even with small problems/bugs.
Sorry for the delay (and the up), but I don't come here really often. I will try to answer to some questions I read.
Quote from: tastefulmrshipNo-one has mentioned the CATart on Wake Up! yet! It seems to work 99.9% on both CPC464 and CPC6128 and even works on all MODEs! I have one question, though; why is Transparent Mode activated? I can't find anything overlapping on the ASCII art, so it seems strange activating it!
It doesn't work at 100% ? Damn... tell me more about it !
I don't remember why the transparent mode is activated, but it is often used for several optimisations. The more relevant example for this CAT is to save 2 bytes where you usually use &17 before the "dot" displayed by the system. If there is dispayed somewhere a symbol (the
I by example, to draw a vertical line), you now want to draw a horizontal line with "
-" crossing the vertical. So, on your text line, there is
already "
_,_,I,_,_" (I use "
_" for the space, separate by "
," for the reading of the topic). So you need to draw "
-,-,x,-,-" where
x is "nothing", to have this result :
> "
_,_,I,_,_" + "
-,-,x,-,-" = "
-,-,I,-,-".
The usual solution is to display this entry (only the 11 filename bytes in hex, separated by the dot displayed ; the "xx" are bytes used for something else in example) :
>
06 xx xx xx 2D 2D 49 17 (.) 2D 2D 15or the same :
>
06 xx xx xx 2D 2D 09 17 (.) 2D 2D 15 or the same written in the 80's :) :
>
06 xx xx xx 2D 2D 49 2D (.) 08 2D 15Now, you can write :
>
06 xx xx xx yy yy 2D 2D (.) 2D 2D 15 where the
yy yy are free bytes !
So instead of moving the cursor and spending 1 byte to hide the dot, you display the dot in transparency on the I and save 2 bytes...
There are many other tricks to do with the transparency mode, but not relevant in this example ; especially in other graphic modes, but this message still cost me a long english post ;D
Quote from: tastefulmrshipI don't know this person, I guess the question will remain a mystery.
You can send me private messages here. GFXOR and Supersly are the same guy.
Quote from: voXfReaXFor the catart: "I suspect the strange thing is to hide supersly's signature (look inside the disc with winape disc editor)"
No you are mistaking with something else : I wrote some small text in the disc, but as the entries were mixed up by Disc-o-magic (never use it with your CAT) to add the real entry (for the file), the text is now unreadable. I'll put it on
my website soon (1 or 2 weeks...), at
this page.

Ah yes, I can see how that would be useful; it gives you an extra few bytes to play with, and potentially 126 bytes in total (128 bytes minus the two bytes to activate transparency in the first place). Which is a considerable saving considering the limitations of the directory size.
I have a very complex Bubble Bobble CATart (http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g385/tastefulmrship/bubblebobble_fake_catart.jpg) (6128 ROM, MODE 1 only) that I am still struggling with; maybe this technique could free up some space. Thanks for the insight!
I bet your CATart could easily work in all the modes / machines if you filled a big part of the "bubbleman" with a cleared window and some other small tricks (the &18 + transparent mode to change the pen in a single byte). If you want more, you should open another topic or ask me in private not to pollute this one. But many answers are in my website (try google translate, sorry).
