Title: WIP: Now That's What I Call Chip Tunes (WinAPE)

Hi guys, here's the first disc of my long-term 3-disc 8-bit music project, NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL CHIP TUNES. Consisting of AY remakes of some of my favourite C64 and Amiga chiptunes from the 80s and early 90s! (Well, when I say favourite, I really mean easiest to convert!)

I am pretty happy with most of the tunes, but some of them still need work... to be honest!

Attached is the first music-disk as well as the .SKS files if anyone wants to see just how bad my music conversion is!
Also, I have attached the first few tunes I've done for disc 2. Now, most of these are unfinished or seriously need a lot of work, but you can see where I was going with them.


Some of the CREDITS programming is taken from the CPCWiki source-code files. Namely;

DISCLAIMER: These tunes were converted on WinAPE and so will sound different on a proper CPC or any other emulator. So, please view this on WinAPE 2.0 A17 with stereo audio to kinda hear what I'm hearing!

They're used by Starkos (http://www.grimware.org/doku.php/documentations/software/starkos/start).

What a massive effort! Listening to it right now.  :D


You know, you can open sks songs in Arkos and make any corrections you need to do to make the songs work in a real CPC.

I did that with DEVIATIONS on disc 1, but I found that channel 2 has a lot lower volume than 1 & 4; is this normal on a real CPC? It's been too long since I used one to remember.

Alan Sugar stole channel 3 from the AY chip itself and sold it as ITV! (Originally ATV)

Nice work. One question about the Fast_Textoutput (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/Programming:Fast_Textoutput) on the Wiki. I notice it uses ADD HL, BC to add $800 to get to the next line in the software-character-output routines. Could you use the SET/RES trick here for a speed up? By my calculations 7 ADD HL, BC instructions take 77 cycles and 7 bytes. 7 SET or RES instructions would be 56 cycles but 14 bytes. Maybe I'm missing something (or I should just try it out, but my Windows machine is out of commission right now).

That's quite odd... I have presented a few days ago your musicdisk to some  guys at the Reset #0 meeting and they all wanted to know why you didn't spread it ! Well, now, that's done :-). We have listened your tunes on a real CPC with speaker, and they sound great !

Every second time you have to use two set res instructions, so it's not that much of a difference


But usage of second register set could speed it quite quick up

Thanks guys! I nearly didn't post it on here today after downloading and watching the BATMAN FOREVER and MOODY demos, which are simply amazing! You guys are the reason I got into computers in the first place; I simply love watching demos!

Wonderful Job!!!  :D I love your conversion of Super Mario Land by Reflex  8) , one of my favourite Amiga Mods from the first time that i enjoyed it in the intro Ting by Movement (http://bitworld.bitfellas.org/demo.php?id=9830); by chance, i was watching it again a few weeks ago for inspiration, and looks so fresh how the first time  ;)

I remember picking up Chaos Engine II AGA (from a local party) and watching the Lightforce cracktro and being mesmerised by the music. It's one of those 25 second tunes that you find yourself listening to for 10 to 15 minutes straight. Wonderful tune.

I hope the lack of drums doesn't spoil it too much. I think the raw music works as it is.

I did not listen all of the songs (directly in arkos tracker, no cpc at work ;) ), but they seem good!

Too sad you did not release your music disc during the ReSeT Party http://www.pushnpop.net/reset/index.php?action=results (http://www.pushnpop.net/reset/index.php?action=results) to reach a broader audience.

By the way, do not hesitate to write 100Hz song, you can reach better quality.
I already hear comic bakery with AMC at 100Hz (by ELiot ?) years ago and it sounded very good.

Of course, that works  :)

Originally, this song came from Super Mario Land of gameboy, and that lacks of drums, too... but i prefer your AY version at the gameboy original, it sounds so happy  ;) ... and if in the future you take an interest in learn about digidrums, well you always could use it to test them, but how i said, i love your version  :)

It's quite sad really, but every tune I've converted has a story behind it. For example; I was a HUGE fan of Robocod, so that's why I converted Richard's beautiful Catlots tune, the Skid Row cracktro tune (my all-time favourite, Synth Drum by Zzzzax) and the Legend trainer tune (Bad Moon by Damien)!
I could go on, but I'll only bore you all!

Not if you interleave the scan lines 0, 1, 3, 2, 6, 4, 5, 7  (or other possible combinations). It would most likely also be possible to fit all the characters into 32 byte boundaries and remove the requirement for an address lookup table.

Here's a quick version of OCEAN LOADER 3 by PETER CLARKE (copyright 1987 Ocean Software).
It still needs a lot of work, but you can get the gist of how it will eventually sound. It's only 50hz for now as I wanted to get the tune structure right before fine-tuning things.

No no no no no no!  :'(
We can not go in that direction. It's easy to hear on a real CPC that the tracks aren't "compatible" with a real CPC.

Either use an emulator with a more accurate AY-emulation, or use a real CPC.

Imagine if the emulators had the colors wrong, and the graphics artist wrote "Well, these pictures I've done only looks right on WinAPE". What?? Not good enough, sorry.
Otherwise the forum should have a completely new category called "CPC emulator only stuff".  ???

Ok, I've finally finished the few 'new' tunes I was working on before I get a solid grip on redoing the olde ones! (ie, converting them all to 'WinAPE 2A18' daunts me! I have sleepless nights, you know?)
Anyway, here they are for you to ridicule;

Yep! Six more tunes that I have fecked-up beyond all recognition. This time, however, I have converted them using WinAPE 2A18 instead of WinAPE 2A17! But, again, don't play these on REAL HARDWARE 'cos they won't work. I have deliberately made sure they only work in emulators! Or something...

Man, you shouldn't use winape 2.18, the sound is pretty screwed on that one. JavaCPC or CPCE do have an accurate emulation of the real hardware.

Oh, I was under the impression that WinAPE 2A18 was infinitely more accurate than WinAPE 2A17... and playing those 6 tunes in JavaCPE/CPCE, I can only hear a few differences from WinAPE 2A18; the notes seem to cut-off at volume 9 in JavaCPE/CPCE rather than volume 8 in 2A18 and the noise channel is pitched higher in JavaCPE/CPCE (notably, both differences can be heard quite clearly in FOOLS 'N' GHOULS). Other than that I can't hear any real difference, but my musical-ear is almost non-existent.

My PC refuses to play HARDENV in Arkos for some reason. I've played around with the buffer, but it doesn't seem to help. Maybe a rebuild of Windows will help as Arkos has worked perfectly in the past.

I must say that comments like this really don't inspire me to keep maintaining WinAPE. After all the effort I put into improving it for 2.0A18, and I know the volume level is too high on B, that'll be fixed in the next release (actually, is now but not released).

Forget it! Your emulator is still the most comprehensive one! And you did a wonderful creation!!!  :) :) :)

I think McKlain could've been referencing 2A17, which was a long way off the real hardware. This is a real shame for me as I prefer the uniform volume scaling and the HARDENV sound you get from 2A17 than is audible on 2A18, CPCE, JavaCPC, etc. All of my AY mp3s are recorded using either 2A17 or ay_emul.exe which (I believe, but may be wrong) also uses uniform scaled volumes and they have a richer, stronger sound for it. The few mp3s I've done via 2A18 (Batman Forever, Bloc Us, Blue Angel 69, Edge Grinder) have a 'tinny' sound in comparison and I'm considering re-recording them with 2A17; it's really noticeable when playing through them all in WinAMP.

Maybe real hardware needs to be modified to conform with 2A17? No? Well, that's a personal choice.

I prefer yours to the others. Short of making my own which I don't intend to do, I'd like to keep using your emulator.

are you nuts?
Just because 1-2 people mention that the AY emulation is bad, you are demotivated?
Come on! Is this really you?
People always moan around! And if so, think:
"Don't moan, do better!"
Really, there's no reason to abandon the WinAPE project!
It's with big distance the best CPC emulator ever!
And when somebody has a problem with you or with WinAPE, he can keep it safe, because it's HIS problem and not yours ;)

Can I just say; I happen to love WinAPE. I use it exclusively. There's rarely a time that I'm awake that it's not running on my PC.

I'm considering re-recording them with 2A17; it's really noticeable when playing through them all in WinAMP.

Maybe real hardware needs to be modified to conform with 2A17? No? Well, that's a personal choice.

Maybe it'd be worth putting in some option to change it back to linear or a selection like Markus did with JavaCPC. The lower volumes on a PC a barely audible with the logarithmic output, I can't remember the real CPC ever being like that.

@Markus: I'm not going to stop development on WinAPE. It's just quite annoying that I spent so many hours with Audacity comparing waveforms from various emulators and listening to lots of tracks and sounds to try and improve it, only to get told it's still not as good as almost every other emulator (one of which I wrote the AY emulation for, except for the log volume stuff!). I'm usually the one out of my friends/family that picks imperfections in music and stereo systems etc, hence spending nearly $500 a few weeks ago repairing my TDL's, and, buggered if I could hear the difference between the recording you made of Burnin' Rubber on the real thing and the emulation under WinAPE.

Is there a specific reason why the AY-chip volumes are log values rather than linear progression? And is this the same for the Spectrum/AtariST/etc chips as well?

Plus, I agree with Executioner; I don't remember the CPC volumes being so 'top heavy' back in the 80s/90s and that was in the peak of my sound/music programming on a native machine. (All my olde music is lost to time, now... but is no real shame as it was all crap, to be honest!)

That may well be the case, but in reality, there's a combination of channels on each output, some other electronics before the output gets to the speaker, and who's to say that the D/A converter in a modern PC is totally linear? The only way to really get accurate sounds levels would be to measure the decibel output from each channel on both a real CPC and emulator at each different level, and then I suspect that would vary quite a bit between PCs.

Sure, true.
But somewhere we must find a way to produce the output as realistic as possible.
When you can trust the docs, it also says, that "noises" and "tones" aren't affected by this curve.
So perhaps a mix of both would be the good way?
I really have no idea but the sources from AY_Emul use these tables and I thought this couldn't be too bad to adapt for CPC emus...
In fact, JEMU outputs values between 0 and 15 here, so why not put them into an array of logarithmic values? ;)

Well, the human sense of hearing works in a logarithmic way, so it makes sense to keep devices logarithmic too. Actually decibel is a logarithmic unit. I don't even know linear stuff by myself, but I'm not a PC freak. Love the CPC  :-*

I would start by making a small program that performs some tests with the AY so it can be recorded and compared to other recordings.


For example, choose a fixed frequency like 1000hz and play it at all the volume levels, and then play some mixed channels.


The idea is that more people can record the test on different machines and compare the results to get sort of a standard measure (should that be possible).

I think another big problem is the difference between the 464 and the 664/6128.
Where the 664/6128 uses volumes 0-15, the 464 just uses volumes 0-7!!!
The 464 simply repeats them!
0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7 -> 16 values.
The 664/6128 has 16 real values:
0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15 -> 16 real values...

This makes it very hard for sound developers to create things working on all machines the same way!!!

Strange. I used to program 'music' on my CPC-464 and always used ENV 1,15,-1,5; it always sounded like it decayed 16 times to silence.
There was never a time when I thought it was just playing 2x8 volumes.

Ok, this is surreal! Try my -TESTSND.BAS proggy with 464 ROM. It plays normally. And ENV 1,15,-1,5 works too. It just seems to be the volume in the SOUND command itself that's affected, not the AY chip (as such).

Rainbow dash if properly paletted, has to get the inked lines of the body a different shade than the lines of the mane.

To me, with CPC palette it means you use the sky blue for hair's outlines, and  Pastel Blue for body outlines... perhaps DarkCyan could work too...


I kept the Sky blue for darkened/shadowed parts...


Of course some other colours may be suitable, but my point is that a proper Rainbow crash need to differenciates those outlinings and the CPC palette can actually enable it.


Perhaps something could be done concerning hilights with Cyan and pastel cyan...  : cyan for shadowed parts, plus dithering of course, and pastel cyan for the foregrounds parts of the body.

Post Edit : oops my bad, sorry, forget what I told about the high number of screwed colours, I used the JavaCPC picture, and JavaCPC emulate a CRT (somewhat) so is not quite "clean"...you actual picture is clean, with only 16 colours.
Still I maintain what I told about the outlines...
Of course it can be even more accurate on a PLUS, pastel blue being used because there is only one shade of "Skyblue" (which is cross-colour between cyan and blue).


Applejack is a pain in the Ass on CPC-Old though, due to the limited range of Oranges and browns..


Next time you'll choose Fluttershy, she takes less colours and is 200% cuter.

 At the time real hardware was for me a CPC connected to amplifier and speakers. My impression is that more sound was made for that setup in the earlier games. Later games often had over the top treble, probably for the internal speaker,  which sounded awful on a decent speaker setup. Still, I see what you mean :)

If you look at the top of RD's mane, you'll see that I did originally use PASTEL BLUE (#14) for the outlines; I missed a few pixels and they are still using #14.

Yes, both apps support 300Hz, but that requires 6x the input of information and as the SID note numbers are opposite ours (ie high numbers are high frequencies) it's 6x the work trying to get the right notes. If I have a few weeks spare, I'll try to get it to work at 300Hz!

It wouldn't leave much CPU time left for anything else, though.

Ok, here's my first draft of the HIGHSCORE tune (as it is the most famous) at 300Hz.

I'm not really happy with the instruments as they stand, but they are only temporary! I just wanted the notes correct before playing with instruments and pitch slides!
It still needs a lot of work, but it's audible (just) and recognisable.


EDIT: Arkos still refuses to load, so it's WinAPE volumes for now... sorry!

Just a little update to my conversion library;

Here's the Amiga PD version of Boulderdash (by Ruben Montiero) as well as the Comic Bakery (by Martin Galway) music file.
I really wanted to rasterise the ASCII logo, but didn't get time to look into how the living feck to even do that! (I know how, I'm just too lazy!)

Thank you. #2 was the first one I converted and my favourite; I grabbed it from an olde intro and then had to search for the others to complete the soundtrack. I quite like how #1 turned out, but as soon as I get a HxC, I'll get the volumes balanced properly.

Those are the WinAPE2A17 volumes... there's a WinAPE2A18 version floating around somewhere!

EDIT: If you really want to promote any of them, then "THIS MUSICDISK IS ABOUT 20% COOLER" is the only one that has been tested on real hardware (by MaV).

I usually work with original .mod or .sid files (and the odd rework; like Uridium2, Streethawk or Still Alive). Spectrum/Atari sound files can be copied directly from .ym to .ayc, so no actual conversion required there (except for some frequency adjustments via AYEmul).

Do you have any specific title(s) you're interested in?

- Jas Brooke has already done a great OutRun version for the original game release, but there are a lot of re-remixes on Amiga for all 3 main tunes. A quick search on AMP gives 34 results. I might find a minimalist version and play with it.
- Again, Golden Axe was released on CPC, so the .ym already exists, but maybe a go at the entire soundtrack from the Amiga? I'm not sure. I still have the Torvak soundtrack to do, first.
- Flimbo's Quest - I already have the title, ingame, Dazz Bazian, game over & completed musics done. An Arkos/WinAPE2A18 version of them all exists and is floating around somewhere. I never liked the C64 intro musics (although almost every RKO remix uses that tune you linked to) and, to be honest, have no intention of ever converting it to CPC. I really hate it.
- Cauldron; no need to say anything about this. Super Cauldron alreay has a decent remix of this simple, but memorable tune.

If you really want to make a "Sound of Indie Retro News" AY music disk, then mixing reworks in with the originals would be a way forward, unless you want a number of actual CPC musicians (McKlain, Egotrip, T&J, Targhan, mr_lou, etc) to put their own original style to existing musics. I'm sure they would be happy enough to do so; I'm just a reworker and have no actual talent, those guys are the real stars of the CPC and this would be a great way of showcasing their talents to a wider audience. Perhaps.

As for the other Amiga titles; I'll grab what I can from ExoticA and see what I can do.

Real world "intricasies" have halted almost all of my CPC activity (which includes dusting the olde girl; she's almost as grey as I am, now! ^_^) but here's something I did before Christmas and it was supposed to evolve into a HNY thing, but I just never got around to doing anything with it.

I'm a huge fan of Benn Daglish, but I always thought his version of David Whittaker's EERIE FOREST was disappointing. I presume he ran out of memory space or frame-time, but I felt it let the ambience of the game down slighty... especially after the brilliant TITLE TUNE.
So, I thought I'd give it a go with my limited ability and STarkos instruments.

I give you... EERIE FOREST from SHADOW OF THE BEAST by David Whittaker (using the .mod version by Jogeir Liljedahl, downloaded from Amiga Mod Preservation). Converted, as always, by SuTeKH/Epyteor.

I got bored again!

If I hear another Giana Sisters or Torvak tune again, I think I'm going to fecking kill myself! I've spent way too much time on them!
For me, this was a pretty decent diversion and a more relaxed, chilled-out version of the CPC Turrican 2 title tune!



EDIT: For phi2x and Grim... a few extra tunes for your ears! A slightly updated .dsk file, attached!

Got bored yesterday, so I did a crapola version of KONG STRIKES BACK. Can someone do an overscan MODE 0 screen for that game? You know, like the one Toto did for the Zynaps CPC-Wiki Remix. All those Ocean games (Bruce Lee, Daley Thompson's Decathalon, etc) had a wide-pixel Speccy loading screen and looked wrong! The CPC needs some graphical loving!!

Also, on the disc are a few compacted screens I had floating around.

Seriously, though, the DKC screen came out better than I had expected (it's still shit, though). It was really only meant as a test of my Otscookie font; in keeping with CPC demoscene tradition, it's almost unreadable! (*smiley face*)

That's quite good. The original title version is quite minimalistic too. Perhaps a bit slow ? (At 120%, it sounds quite good).

Quite possibly, yes. The "attract" and "play" tunes are pretty simple to do. The only issue, I see, is the "orchestra hit" instrument, which can be a bitch to emulate in arpegios. I have tried it in the past to limited success. I might have to ask one of the CPC musicians for help.

Ok, the proper-speed version of The Secret Of Monkey Island and 3 tunes from Pinball Dreams (Beat Box) by Blaizer (Olof Gustafsson).
I have only tested the multi-MODE & rasters on WinAPE as my 6128 is buried under a week's worth of dirty clothes; if they're wrong on real hardware, then (for now) tough! ^_^

Anyway... that concludes my weekend boredom.

Golden Axe is one of the best music for C64. Maybe.....  :laugh:

i use a special tool, which allows to extract the assets out of an Amiga properly.

I found this on another one of my HDs. This is The Last V8 C64 remake! ^_^

Based on 4-Mat's Amiga module and it sounds a LOT different to Rob's CPC version.

THIS is just something that i feel time to time with some people around here... and other forums in the past...

What's goin' on with them? what they want from the people that makes stuff on CPC? Are they ever be satisfied with something??

I'm just tired of some people bashing on CPC coders, graphicians, composers that for me are gods on the cpc, we just only be thankful for them... People like Prodatron, Syx, Mauricio, Rhino, Toto, Duke, you and a large etc... it's impossible to say any negative things on your productions.

For the sake of god, i saw people critizicing Symbos in the past, Prodatron deservers a nobel prize on computing!.

It makes me think that is only envy, some people tends to envy others, instead of try to be better coders, graphicians or composers... they only can envy other people.

And, besides criticizing now i noticed lately some kind of new trolling... There is people that under reviewing games on different systems (youtube videos), seems to tend trolling on the CPC Side... I see no reason, games crearly superior on the Amstrad side... they don't see it (or don't want to) arguing silly things...

I just don't understand... really, and i don't try to understand them anyway... I know that this type of people exist, we have to put up with while carry on with our lives...

That is true and most of them belong to the console era.
They believe that everything should play as metroid, mario and sound like zelda. Oh and it MUST have two joy buttons.
So their judgement stands only with what they grew up with, don't pay attention to them. It's like talking about something that they never saw.


And yes, you can't judge a person who gives something for free to a dead machine nowadays.

Just look through the pages of "The Hall Of Shame" to see what has been said and by whom. You'll see that that whole section of the forum is pretty much dominated by one forum member. I always liked the ingame music for Hero Quest, but also thought it could really do with a little tweaking here and there. I realise that there are memory and frametime constraints, but this is 128kb for God's sake! No-one will ever need more than 128kb!

Well, here's a pretty BASIC version of the tune.

This single-filer uses Madram's AYC player rather than the usual Arkos player. This is because Arkos simply refused to convert either the .SKS or .AKS to .BIN, which is interesting as STarkos converts the .SKS with no issues.
Anyway, attached is the Nintendo Zelda Theme... finally!



EDIT: Corrected by Targhan... I made a mistake by accessing a non-defined instrument!

This is a little project I started in late 2015, but due to "personal issues" I never got around to finishing it. It was supposed to have all sorts of funky stuff on-screen... but, instead, you get this boring text that I cobbled together this morning and some pretty generic rasters (even by my standards!)

The musicdisk works 100% on WinAPE, JavaCPC and my now-near-dead CPC6128, but should work on any configuration of real-hardware (ie, it doesn't do anything useful to confuse different CPC models)... however, it doesn't work exactly 100% on CPCe194 (due to a cheaty use of a HALT command instead of actually counting NOPs per frame!). Anyway, the music is the important part of it all and I hope you enjoy one/some/all of my AY interpretations of GEMINI's Amiga chiptunes!

The C64 classic "Thrust" by Rob Hubbard; taken from an Amiga .mod remake by Beldoroon and tacked onto various PSG registers by me.
Works better on real hardware as all emulators really don't like flip-screen palettes!

A long, long time ago, in this galaxy, Crown/BENG also did a cover of that music. He managed to get an overall more creepy tone which fits the music well (alas his "sprooochsss" and "spraaatch" sounds for percussions were just terrible imo). If you haven't heard it, you can find it (amongst many other Amiga covers) in BadMag 2 (http://cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=8244) (press the M key to change the music).

That's a nice version of the tune, indeed. I wanted something nice and clean and orchestral (or as close to orchestral as you can get in 3 channels) to give it that Medieval-esque feel... but, as always, I failed miserably! ^_^



Anyway, here's a quick version Triace's B2B6 tune from the AmigaOCS demo of the same name (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=71724) released a few weeks ago at DATASTORM'17.
It's a little "tinny", but I think it nearly works! Enjoy!

My first sterile AY-style transfer without originality for 2018 is a "sample" version of the Amiga Klax title tune by Matt Furniss!
The background screen is a CPCnorm recoloured GX4K Klax cart screen!

Ok, another music converted by me for 2018! The Amiga NETHERWORLD title music by Nigel Pritchard. I always thought the ST:01 tune was nice, but nowhere near as atmospheric as J Dave Roger's 10-bar AY tune!
Background screens are; a recolour of the C64 screen and a little retouched CPC screen.

I am starting a long list of serious musical composition conversions with La Monte Young's "Composition 1960 #7" in its entirety.
For my second release, I might just redo my "Delta Remix" by slowing it down and calling it... hey, I dunno... Koyaanisqatsi, perhaps!

Future Freak/Dexion - The Last Hero (Zetrix/Arcane Remix)

It's better known as "ARCANE THEME" on Amiga... and was used in a number of intros/cracktros/trainers/etc.
It was one of my all-time favourite Amiga chiptunes of all tune! But now, after listening to the C64 & Amiga versions and copying it to the CPC note by note, I really hate it! ^_^

I used to have a YooToob channel, but CPCers living in the USA & Germany (according to the YooToo statistics) downvoted everything I ever uploaded and I just thought "what's the point?", deleted them all and decided posting the .dsk files here was the easiest way for me to continue something I enjoy, but certain CPCers obviously don't!

I appreciate the comments guys, but I like my musics on here and I am not looking for "fortune and glory" with what I do. I enjoy converting Amiga/C64 tunes and if someone likes listening to them, then this is the place to go to get them! If someone else wants to post them somewhere else, then that's fine too! I think CPCPower & CPCRulez have a lot of the .dsk files I've posted here, so...

"Ghosts 'n' Goblins" yes, on page 6 (I think) of this thread. I am looking to convert the Amiga title tune for "Ghouls 'n' Ghosts" at some point, but it won't be until next year.
I still have two Hard(sound) Brexit volumes to complete before then! ^_^

Also, someone asked for "Uridium 2" title-tune after I uploaded the loader-tune, and it's something I've wanted to convert for a while, so I might do that at the same time as "Ghouls 'n' Ghosts"!

Here's something I have been working on for the past FIVE days!
My conversion of Esau/Traktor's .mod version of Jerry Goldsmith's "The Gremlin Rag" from the film "Gremlins".

However, I decided to add it to the GREMLINS ADVENTURE game (as I am a big adventure fan) and so it's attached here!
(The original C64 loading screen was pixelled by Teoman Irmak, recoloured on CPC by me!)
