Title: Bad Apple (Arnold) demo on Arnold emulator?
Post by: blackdalek on 00:27, 18 March 18
Is it possible to run the Bad Arnold demo on the Arnold Emulator? If so, how do I configure the emulator to run it?

Yes.

First check the drives are configured:

File->Drive A->Drive A Settings...

ensure it's set to 40-43 tracks and single sided.

File->Drive B->Drive B Settings...

ensure it's set to 80-83 tracks and double sided.

Then configure more memory:

Settings->Devices->Internal Devices...

Select "Yarek's 4MB Internal Ram Expansion", and bring up the context menu (right click on the mouse or use the menu key) and choose "enable".

Are there any other settings?
After making your suggested settings, I put disk A into drive A and disk B into drive B (not sure if that is the intended locations for the disks).
Run"Disk" on drive A gives.... black screen, flashing white/black border.

It looks amazing on the BBC and doesn't require any extra memory. On the CPC it's a bit clunky and won't run on a standard machine. Shame really. Guess the BBC's super fast low memory Teletext mode gives it the edge.

I just tested it.

It takes a long time to load, the black/white flashing happens as it reads additional files.

But, it also *requires* parados. So you need to activate it.

Settings->Rom->Override On board rom settings...

Pick AMSDOS, then bring up the context menu and choose "pick builtin..". This chooses roms from the arnold install. Browse down the list for parados and choose it. It'll show it in the dialog.

Reset the cpc and load again.. there appears to be a bug somewhere because when it starts to read drive B you need to press 'R' to retry. Don't know why yet.

You can watch loading progress via "View->Drive Status..". This shows what each drive is doing.

Here you can see the track number as it reads. It reads from A first (up to track 3 on A) and then B (up to track 79). Border goes purple, loads a bit from A then starts.

All of this will be made easier with the next version of Arnold, it will have more configurations defined making it easier.

I still couldn't get it to work. I might be running an outdated Arnold emulator for linux. Let me check....

Build Date: Aug 19 2017
Build Time: 20:17:04
Build Type: Debug
Using SDL
Compiled with: 1.2.15
Using with: 1.2.15
wxWidgets version: wxWidgets 3.0.2
wxWidgets Unicode build
wxWidgets for GTK2
Using Arnold Z80 emulation

Shame then that you and SuTeKH didn't do a better version then.

Back to topic: I never tested this on Arnold-Emulator but I wasn't able to run it, too. Cause it needs 1MB RAM, I enabled Yarek 4MB extra RAM, I enabled PlayCity and Parados.
It seems then to load only part of the files (only A?) and there is no sound at all.

I'm using the latest windows-installer-version of Arnold (13-05-2017).

I really did this stuff more for the things like the M4-Board. Because here you could put all of the files into one folder and it loads super-fast on a real machine. It would be super-great to have the M4-Board-Filesystem and the Networking-Stuff supported in Emulators!

Took that rather personally when the comment was more about how the BBC has an ultra fast low memory screen mode that the CPC can't match!

Indeed, and as a big BITSHIFTER's fan, it's my favourite 8-bit version!
