Question guys, is WinApe still the best emulator for learning to program? Does anyone know what happened to the developer?

goksteroo

You'll get arguments and differences of opinions over any answers!!
I use WinApe as I'm used to it. It does all I want and seems to work fine for basic and MC programming.

I see. I just wanted to know if there's something equally good that is open-source and/or more updated, as the developer of WinApe seems to have disappeared from the planet.

There are newcomers into the emulation scene, some pretty close (RetroVirtualMachine) or even slightly better (ACE) than WinAPE ; unfortunately they are closed source and/or not available for Windows.
But some others recent emulators are also available now, open-source etc. with all the great benefits we can think about. They are doing good, but not exactly equal to WinAPE, especially for debugging purposes. Those emulators are all going into the good direction, so let's be patient and help them with bug reports, suggestions etc!  ;)
My personal website: https://norecess.cpcscene.net
My current project is Sonic GX, a remake of Sonic the Hedgehog for the awesome Amstrad GX-4000 game console!

if you use Linux, NoRecess did an enhanced version very cool for debug/trace/etc.
My pronouns are RASM and ACE

WinAPE ist greaf for Plus emulation.
For best DSK handling use Caprice.
For best overall emulation and gimmicks use JavaCPC.
And I like WinCPC for debugging.

try yourself, there is "only" to type "make" in the repository (maybe install some packages like ncurses, ...)

This works like a charme, never did those things until now but it´s working (really well) on my Raspberry Pi 400  ;D

Only thing not working is the audio level, allways stays at 100%, even if I choose 25% ... but hey, doesn´t matter ... THANKS  :)

I compile it and it works, but finally return to 32 bit raspbian because there was a lot of emulators and other software with problems.
