If I find my old joysticks, what adapter do I need to get it to work using an emulator on a modern PC?

Secondly, if I can't find them, is there a "retro" joystick on the market that you can recommend?

Thanks again.

You can build an adapter on your own, based on USB encoders for arcade machines, like this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/EG-STARTS-Encoder-Controllers-Joystick/dp/B01N0GZQZI

It's pretty easy to adapt:

I recently found this tiny adapter on ebay, but haven't tried it yet:

And if you want a brand new joystick, there is a Competition Pro USB edition out there, which I personally think is great.

Thanks. Because I'm in a bit of a rush to get something working, and can't guarantee getting the old monitor working soon, I went ahead and ordered two of the new joysticks you recommended, for use with an emulator. In the long run I'd like to get the original equipment all working again, though.
