Title: WinAPE doesn't like playing Wriggler (by Romantic Robot)
Post by: tastefulmrship on 14:18, 21 September 12
I didn't know whether to put this in GAMES or here in EMULATORS, but seeing as this problem doesn't occur in Caprice32, JavaCPC or CPCe, EMULATORS would be the obvious place!

I've been playing Wriggler (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1111) (by Romantic Robot) over the past few days, mainly because I always loved playing it back in the 80s and because I never did manage to complete it. I have been POKEing around and managed to find "infinite lives" so far, which is enough to get to the end of the mansion level... although I always come 2nd, but I am also working on that!

Randomly, but always while you're losing energy via an enemy insect, WinAPE crashes; either within the CPC environment (ie the screen goes corrupt and the game freezes) or sometimes it's drops a Windows error (as attached) as well. When I say randomly, this problem is relatively easy to replicate by being killed by the first ant you find when you start (basically, go right).
I have ripped the original TAPE, the DISC, the cracked DISC and the Amstrad Action covertape; they all have the same problem! Even when playing from the TAPE version, although this seems to be more stable than the DISC versions. (I tried it with AMSDOS, with PARADOS, and no DOS, but no difference)

Anyone got any ideas why this is happening? Is there a dodgy opcode being used that WinAPE does not recognise or like?
It's not a real concern, as it works perfectly on other emulators, but it's annoying when I have to transfer discs between emulators just to test a small update in loader-code.

Attached is the latest WinAPE error code and a copy of my "ripped" disc file. RUN"CHEAT" to play with infinite lives.

Thanks for finding this... I've just spent all afternoon tracking down the problem which has to do with reading words over the boundary #FFFF..#0000.

Either the game itself is very buggy or the cheat has caused a serious problem also since it's jumping all over the code to places it just shouldn't be.

If you try using RUN"W" this will play the game without cheats, but I found it crashed with or without cheating.

Amazing, I used to play this game a bit (from the AA Covertape), once I worked out where the other Worm was going. 8D
Guess it's one of those fallen under the Radar ones. Romantic Robot I don't think they made all that many games, not suggesting they were bad at it.  :D

I thought the game had a lot of potential in the 80s and it had a big enough map to keep me enthralled with my graph paper mapping it all out, despite the map not being "logical". Spectrum World has a superb map, very big, very detailed!

Wriggler is one of those games that could benefit from network/modem play. Simplify the map a LOT and have up-to 4 maggots racing around the place... have little weapons as well to defeat your opponents. A marathon 8-bit Worms! A bit niche, I guess, but might work.
