Title: WinApe emulation issue
Post by: Wanderer on 02:44, 14 March 09
This is a mix of a newsgroups post in comp.sys.amstrad.8bit and its replies. Executioner might be interested so i thought i'd post it here...

Subject: Which Windows XP-compatible CPC emulators will run Megablasters?

I'm frustrated; I used to be able to run Megablasters on a friend's
WinME box, and it's my favourite BomberMan clone of all time.
However, I've lost most of the emulators I had back then.

I've recently tried a Google search for CPC emus, and most of the ones
I downloaded (that will run on XP, either directly or in a DOSBox
session) have the CPCEmu problem that they can't emulate the screen
trickery used, so produce a garbled screen.  (They also lack the
wonderful machine code monitor built in to CPCEmu, making them (to my
mind) pointless.)

The old Caprice that I had from those days displays the Odiesoft
screen (with wonderful surround-sound effects on my 4.1 speaker
setup ) and then crashes.  The latest Caprice (as found in my search)
displays the Odiesoft screen *twice* and then crashes.

What should I download, and where from?  (I have a 1.4Ghz dual-core
machine with 2Gb memory, so spec shouldn't be a problem.)

I have; it displays the Odiesoft screen and then resets.

Hello,

Megablasters runs ok on last release of WINAPE if you remove the "fast disc emulation".

Have a good bombing day :-).

Thanks for the info. I'll inform them on that.

Thanks for answering T&J.

Fast disc emulation should work fine with most loaders, but there are the odd few which really don't like it because the timing is wrong. I've noticed at least on Hexagon loader reset because it actually has badly written relocation code which gets lucky with interrupt timing.
