Title: WinAPE security
Post by: PaddyC13 on 16:48, 30 October 18
Hi Folks,

When I try to go to www.winape.net via Chrome it reports a security error:

The site ahead contains harmful programs

Attackers on www.winape.net might attempt to trick you into installing programs that harm your browsing experience (for example, by changing your homepage or showing extra ads on sites you visit). Learn more

Help improve Safe Browsing by sending some system information and page content to Google. Privacy policy

Is this legitimate or Chrome being overly cautious?

Many thanks

Its a chrome thing, I think they decided to start policing the net and telling people which sites are and aren't safe in their opinion, I don't get the error in edge on this laptop, nor firefox on my PC.

Firefox reports the same warning, so they either both take their Blacklist from the same source or there really is something harmful there?

I know this is one of those "how long is piece of string" type questions but which is best WinAPE or JavaCPC?

Well, one of the best questions... allow me to share my opinion, but it's very personal so others will disagree. Ok, I try to focus on the particular advantages:

WinApe: Plus emulation
JavaCPC: Lots of tools
WinCPC: Well debugger
Caprice: Perfect for coding (if you change a DSK it will automatically ask you if you want to overwrite the old DSK or save a new one) - yes, so let's say DSK handling.

For development of course go regularily back to the real machine and check if things work on real hardware too. Trust me ;-)

Thanks GunHead.  The aspect (excuse the pun) I am struggling with on JavaCPC is the screen rendering.  The 1x, 2x, 2x Simple options etc. seem to create weird looking pixels.  Nothing too bad, just a wee bit off.  Also, for full screen it would be nice to be able to specify the resolution and for the screen to be centered in the monitor.  It is not too bad on a FHD screen but on a HDR it simply looks awful.

I will brace the WinAPE site and see if this is any better.

Many thanks

Yes, have a look. I'm sure the site is save.  :)
As I remember JavaCPC has some screen filters, but I don't know about pixel aspects.

I'm seeing a warning in Firefox 63.0, and the advisory is "provided by Google Safe Browsing" - so it looks like Firefox is using the same source as Chrome.

WinAPE 2.0 Beta 2 can be downloaded from NVG (ftp://ftp.nvg.ntnu.no/pub/cpc/emulator/windows/winape.zip).

OK, I put caution to the wind and went to WinAPE.net and downloaded version 2.0b2 (05-Jan-2016).  Not a great success as it crashes with a DirectX error when trying to run fullscreen on my Windows 10 laptop.  Also, the keyboard mapping is no good as by default the function keys are defined to look on the numeric keypad which my ThinkPad does not have!  There is a tool remap keys but no way to set F1 on the CPC to F1 on the PC?

I believe the DirectX issue has been discussed elsewhere here, try looking for it.

Regarding the numeric keypad, doesn't it work with num lock on?

Thanks Gryzor.  I will check again but I believe that NUM LOCK had no effect.  Is WinAPE being actively developed anymore?  The latest version is nearly 3 years old?
