Title: windows emulators running under linux
Post by: arnoldemu on 17:01, 08 January 12
FYI: I tried to run 2 emulators (so far) using wine under linux.

wincpc works ok. not 100% but ok.
winape - no display, menus flicker. many problems.

I am testing under ubuntu 10.10, on a P4 equivalent (AMD based) machine 2.4Ghz. nvidia gfx card (but not nvidia drivers because they cause issue for me).
Of course they run slow, but wincpc runs really slow, almost unuseable. I was expecting it to run slow, but not this slow.

Did you disable the directx functions in WinApe's display settings?

Try running linux on a virtual machine, running wine and the the emulator for the extra silly touch!  ;D

Why are you testing emulator with wine?
I mean, especially considering you're the author of the Linux version of Arnold....

Why do you run CPC games in Mame?
I mean you own a CPC... :D

I don't run CPC games in Mame. I run some CPC games in Mess.
And I do so because they are more fun to play on an arcade cabinet. Games like Dead on Time, R-type and Bubble Bobble are definitely more fun that way.
Other more cozy games I still play on a real CPC, like Radzone and Obsidian and such.

So, it depends on the game.

WinAPE runs well under Wine 1.3.35 for me.

2.53GHz C2D E7200, Ubuntu 10.04, Nvidia binary X server 195.36.24.

Speed with WinCPC could possibly be due to not having fully accelerated X server, OpenGL will emulate in software (very slowly) any function that can't be done in hardware.  Not sure of the capabilities of the open source Nvidia driver, though.

Interesting that people have got WinAPE to work with wine. For me, it's always appeared to work until you open dialog boxes at which point it acts strange.

It's also interesting that people are failing with WinCPC. I use this under wine on 3 different Linux systems and I've never had a serious problem with it. Sometimes if you're playing music when you load it, it won't be able to access the sound device and there's quite a bit of TTY spam too, but it always seems to run reliably.

But.... why run Windows emulator, when there are several Linux emulators? Arnold and Caprice runs fine, or?

For me, the debugging facilities of WinCPC and WinAPE are amazing. Being able to breakpoint the code and see exactly the CRTC MA/RA position highlighted is probably the most amazingly feature ever! That and they both do a very good job of emulating monitor behaviour too. The built in assemblers are an absolute must for me too.

I tried a couple of Linux emulators, but I always kept coming back to WinCPC under wine.

If you use it regularly then why not use VirtualBox and run it "natively" under Windows? Sure, a couple of wasted GBs, but...

only for comparison, but also to see how the competition works under this platform.

I am still working on an improved version of Arnold which works under Linux (it's my development platform).
The debugger is much better than before (compared to win32 version).
I plan to integrate pasmo assembler too (I have permission from the author).
So in the future, you may move to another emu ;)

I'm running Tiny Core Linux off a USB stick... it is extremely fast and minimal!

I had no success with winape and wincpc running via wine, I'd get the blue amstrad screen displayed but any text I entered would just be output in the terminal window where I ran wine from.  I tried fiddling around with the graphics settings, to no avail.  (I assume that Tiny Core doesn't load all the fancy graphics libraries that ubuntu etc... do, as the purpose of the distro. is to be lean and mean).

What I did get running nicely was xcpc.  it's simple and basic but it works okay.  If anyone else has tried any of this on Tiny (http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/welcome.html) and got it working, I'd be glad to know!

For WinApe in my Debian Sid 64, i'm using the wine packages from here, (http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/) but not the last version, i'm using an old wine 1.3.26... if it works, don't touch  ;D

WinApe on Debian SID 64?? Sounds like it's a setup for a Commodore!

Bryce.

Well, Sid (https://www.google.com/search?q=sid+toy+story&hl=es&client=iceweasel-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:unofficial&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=HF0dT972BI2LhQfi_PT-AQ&ved=0CCQQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=893) has the look of a typical commodore user  ;D
