I have never fully believed the reason given for the Amstrad version of Elite having things missing from it was due to lack of memory, the BBC B had 32 K total uless you had a 64K version.
So how does the 64K CPC464 have a memory limitation for the same game?

TFM

Well, the 464 has actually 48 KB and 16 KB V-RAM in case of this game. So there are still 16 KB more than on the 32 KB machine. Blame the speccy port!
I only can suggest to play starglider instead.

Did you know the 128 Spectrum version of Starglider had music on the loading screen while the Amstrad version did not.
I like CPC version of Elite and have a working BBC disk version which I like too, so it was just lazy porting striking the CPC again...

TFM

Probably, and Starglider got squeezed into 48 KB too. Sadly less than 1% of the games ever used more than the first 64 KB RAM of the CPC.

Interestingly enough, Starglider on the CPC uses less than 40kb, and most of the variables have been put into the invisible part of the screen RAM. So, there's room for enhancements.

I wander if 128K versions redos like R-Type could be,

Puresox

what was missing on the Amstrad version of Elite?

dcdrac

Ships that are in the BBC B 32 K version, extra missions.

TFM

That would be good points for a pimped up version  8)

AMSDOS

I was under the impression that Elite was written on a BBC Micro, true it doesn't explain why the 32k BBC version would have more features than the Amstrad version, and I'm unsure if having a 6502 processor would have anything to do with it.
* Using the old Amstrad Languages :D * And create my own ;)
* Incorporating the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

There are different BBC versions.

I'm not sure which version are talking about. Is it the BBC Model B tape version?

The BBC disc version loaded some extras, there was extras in the 6502 co-processor version too.

I watched through this:
GDC Vault - Classic Game Postmortem - ELITE

It's a talk that David Braben gave about elite.
It is very interesting when it comes to the mathematics.

The Amstrad version was not developed by the same people. It was done by another company which may have taken a different approach.
They may have used double buffering on the amstrad, and certainly the amstrad version has a filled in planet/sun.

Either way, I think the Amstrad version is good. It captures the playability well.

Thank goodness it doesn't have the BBC's docking computer. That one takes ages to dock, and sometimes it can crash the ship against the sides of the space station docking port.

You didn't find out about it - somebody told you  :P  Sorry, couldn't resist. But never mind it's new to me too. In Future I'll ask Markus first  ;)

MacDeath

Just want to know : is 3D easier in Mode0?

I mean ok more colours, but also less pixels...

TFM

That really doesn't matter. Of couse plotting pixels take its time. But from a programmer POV all the calculations are the tedious part of it. As soon as you know the coordinates, then plotting is just fun ;-)
(Same for lines of filling shapes).
