Title: Adapting loading screens that sucked.
Post by: Brundij on 19:14, 29 October 21
We all love our CPC's but some games came with really ugly or bland loading screens. I adapted a few ones that in my opinion look much better in C64 (I can't figure why they didn't use these for CPC since many loading screens are the same with a palette adapted for each system) and since they share similar caracteristics like anamorphic and 16 simultaneous colors I simply adapted the palette for the CPC. If anyone is interested in use them in their own DSK's or CDT's I'll post the SCR files too.

Myth's CPC version didn't have a loading screen.
The Bugout one isn't a CPC game. But I used it to practice some recolouring and learn how patterns work because the art is nice.

I hope @XeNoMoRPH (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1952) is working on a slideshow :)

Thanks! I make my own ones in CDT using a loader with stripes in the border which trocoloco a forum member adapted for doing them. So if you're interested check it out (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/general-discussion/slideshows-on-tape/msg194463/#msg194463).
I forgot to include this one. Adapted form Spectrum this time. The game didn't have loading screen in CPC. Either in ZX.

More loading screens for games that didn't have one. This time Shinobi, adapted from the arcade title screen. Two flavours to choose from: Mode 0 and Mode 1.
Title: Re: Adapting loading screens that sucked.
Post by: eto on 18:37, 07 December 21
Just an idea: if you do a black/white Sega logo in Mode 1, you would have a green to get a screen that would be very similar to Arcade.
Title: Re: Adapting loading screens that sucked.
Post by: Brundij on 18:53, 07 December 21
Well I already tried, but a B/W logo over the already black ninja mask doesn't look too good. Also the cpc greens are too dark or too bright to match the original one which is not green but a hue of brown. But if you like it more, here you are. I made another with the dark yellow color (12 , &5E) which is similar to the original.

Well, I didn't know that. Your colour choice manages to add detail to the face. Nice one. Mine pales in comparison.

I notice though yours doesn't use the cpc standard resolution. Do you mind if I use yours remove the start and options and I add the Sega logo and copyrights and fit it into a 320 x200 size?
Title: Re: Adapting loading screens that sucked.

Because it was made for a Shinobi rework on CPC that not use the same screen resolution.
So, I will prefer to not use it only for the same old CPC game, without ingame improvements.

But, if that can give you some ideas to redo game screens, I'm happy with that.

Oh Ok. I didn't know that either. It's hard to follow everything that comes out. Besides, I'm still learning. I've been doing this for a year and a half only. In mode 1 it's really hard to choose which colours to use for the screen to look close to the original. But sometimes as you have shown detail is more important.

Did Chase HQ ever get fixed? that loading screen was shocking especially compared to the box art which would look great in mode 0

I'm putting that one next on my list. Unless someone did it already.  :P I'll try to do one with the box art, and then adapt the C64 one for the CPC. The one they used has it's charm though.

I thought so too first, but in the face area (forehead), there seem to be 5 colours per line.
Title: Re: Adapting loading screens that sucked.
Post by: Brundij on 13:28, 08 December 21
I didn't realize. Yeah there are 6 colours, so it's kind of cheating :D Well, the ones I made are standard screens, easier to use in a loader.
Title: Re: Adapting loading screens that sucked.
Post by: TotO on 13:43, 08 December 21
There are mainly 4 colours, but some rasters with up to 5 colours per scanline for the face.
It is not cheating as CPC programs do that from the 80s. It is just using the CPC capabilities.

Either way, I think there is nothing legitimate to replace the original loading screens with others, if there is not behind a desire to make an improved version of the game to go with it.

It was a joke. I just do this for fun, and if someone wants to tinker with their computers they're free to do so. Not everyone has the knowledge or don't have time or desire to learn how to do it the hard way.

What else than doing things for fun on CPC?  :)

Whether you make title screens for your pleasure, it's cool and allow to familiarize yourself with the machine and improve your skills. It was the object of my contribution and my opinion is linked to respect and not forget for the original work.
Title: Re: Adapting loading screens that sucked.
Post by: Brundij on 14:38, 08 December 21
Well I understand your point and respect it but I don't agree. I really don't see anything disrespectful in swapping a loading screen for another, which is something whoever does, will do it in the privacy of his tinkering with his own game copies (If anyone uses the screens I make at all). I'm not distributing copies of games with title screen swapped. I don't even know how to do a proper loader in basic for disc games. Only for tapes and barely.

I do like it when "idiotic CPC purists" are annoyed, but I don't like it when they belittle other people's fun... ^_^
... and to add to that annoyance, here is my recent "SUPREMACY C64" rework.

Keep up the good work, @Brundij (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3495)! Some of us, less vocal people, appreciate what you do!

I think that you don't agree because you don't considerate the splash screen as part of the original game graphist work. But so goes life. As I told you, it was cool to do this for your enjoyment and to improve your skill... Have fun! ;)

I really don't know how you can deduct such thing. Is it because of the title? Well, there are screens which in my opinion, were done in a lazy way. Badly coloured, badly drawn, call it what you like I posted examples of what I mean. Anyways, I don't understand right now. According to your point of view, changing a loading screen is disrespectful to the original work of the graphic artist. Then explain to me how deciding that a game can be improved then changed in part or remaking it wholly is less disrespectful to the original work.

There is nothing to deduce here. The title screens are usually signed by the game graphic designers. ;)

Well... You take what I said out of context to confront two things that don't have to be opposed. For example, you can remove bugs or improve the display and wish to report it on the title screen to let it be known, or even remake the whole game and therefore the title screen that goes with it because no more related to the original graphic designer.

So you say I have to add something like: This is not an original screen, then credit the original artist in every screen I make that in the other hand had nothing to do with the image I adapted. I think it's pointless since it's obvious it's not the original image. I'ts something no one that has remade or done new loading screens has ever done. Even graphic artists from the 8 bits era do this and don't credit the original artist in their new work (STE'86 anyone?) When I recolour a C64 image I leave as it is, signature and all, then I add mine since recolouring and retouching takes some time and effort to do. And not always add it.
Even if I wanted to do that, I have been doing loading screen compilations (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/general-discussion/slideshows-on-tape/msg194463/#msg194463) from some time now and in many cases it's impossible to track down who did a loading screen when I try to document them. My only sources are pages like CPC Power, Amstrad.es or CPC Rulez which are databases that have done that work.
I just do what I do, again, for fun, and then share it with the community. If someone wants to use the images in their own compilations or dsk images or cdt's or print them in toilet paper then wipe their asses with it they're free to do so.
I'm always open for constructive criticism about the graphic stuff, but since we are going in circles again, it's the last answer you'll get from me regarding what you think what is and what is not correct. Have a nice one.

Has there ever been a custom loader with raster splits on the screen? Feels like it would be very tricky for tape (dunno about disk) as it would require interrupts to be enabled and that would surely play havoc with the timing.

Chase HQ is a perfect example. While the game itself is a good Speccy conversion, the original title screen is just a crappy 1:1 clone, not even slightly adapted to properly utilise the CPC. Of course a new screen would have cost some time, so they probably didn't bother. I don't see why this shouldn't be "fixed" and I personally think in such a case it's a big honour for the game developer and designer that someone takes some time today to produce a title screen that suits the game well.

Very well done, a great title screen.

I just remembered: Months ago while doing loading screen compilations I found this one done  by Martin Holland (MACH or MACK not sure) for the game Rookie. The loading screen in the preserved copies looks like in the left. Just tinkering with the colours in the palette, not recolouring or changing the palette order I managed to leave it like in the right side.

The left one must be wrong. That looks like someone forgot to set the right palette in the loader - and then it was released without anyone noticing.

Also there? Cool. I don't know who bothered to compile them all in a DSK but cool and thanks if he reads this. I just stumbled a couple of days ago with some of my CDT compilations in CPC Power. I had no idea :)

As far as I know he will. He asked me for permission to use the new screen.

Hi ! Indeed I asked you a couple of time ago.
I quote here to thank you and congrat you as well.
As noticed I keep your sign and transpose identically the « Old »colors as you've done.

And people in Amstradiens FB group had appreciated the example screens you had rebuild recently.
Keep doing and enjoy the positive feedback ONLY ^^

Greetings

That's cool. You may have noticed I'm not on Facebook or Twitter (though Xenomorph kept me informed) so if you want to stay in touch for anything else let me know here.

And people in Amstradiens FB group had appreciated the example screens you had rebuild recently.
Keep doing and enjoy the positive feedback ONLY ^^
Thanks for the kind words. It encourages me to keep going and learning.

One more, The Great Escape this time. I tried different things before I dared to recreate the original logo. With the gothic font of the original screen in red and blue and untitled. So you can choose the one you hate less.

Here is an ALTERNATIVE loading screen for Chase H.Q. This one uses the ZX screen size plus one more line (256x200)
The other ones look decent but this one's my fave for sure.  The guys look a lot cooler and better drawn.

The toki coder is working to improve chase h.q, maybe he will add a new title screen.
What? How? Am curious.  I thought it was already an amazing port.  What's being added? :O

I also did this one a few days ago for the game Top Top which had no loading screen, a shame since they made a cool cover illustration for it. Also there's a CDT done that includes the loading screen and uses a nice loader with stripes in the border instead of the standard loading routine by blocks.

I don't know the details but I think he's adding some intro besides CPC+ palette(s)

Did some fixes to the Hunchback 2 screen: One of the bells doesn't look dented and softened the girl's chin.

Awesome...

Do you also create new DSK images and upload them somewhere? I'd love to see them in real action.

btw: is there a specific reason you are using RAR? I know most of us somehow also can open RAR but it often requires extra software, where ZIP can be opened without any 3rd party tool.

I could create a cdt. In fact I was thinking about it yesterday.
Someone created a dsk with some of the images, with a slideshow utility that  I don't know the name and uploaded it to CPC rulez. https://cpcrulez.fr/demostestSL_brundij-adapting_loading_screens_that_sucked..htm (https://cpcrulez.fr/demostestSL_brundij-adapting_loading_screens_that_sucked..htm)
I didn't think about that rar thing. I use Winrar and lets me select between rar, rar5 (which I never used) and zip. Sometimes if I remember to check it I use zip and if not rar. Not a particular reason.

Oh I meant for the particular game. New screen + loader that sets the right colours. Or would that be up to someone else to do that?

I don't know how to do that. I can do these cdts with CNG loader because Trocoloco adapted it to load screens sequentially editing a template only. I barely know anything else than changing colours or print some text and place it on screen.  :P

But there's a CDT for Top Top on this thread under it's preview image made by Trocoloco. Trocoloco also made a CDT for Le 5eme Axe and Nich made a DSK, both in this thread https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/games/le-5-eme-axe-loading-screen/ (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/games/le-5-eme-axe-loading-screen/)

And here's a CDT compiling all the screens in the thread so far and a couple I didn't posted, chronologically ordered.

I could do this for some of @Brundij (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=3495)'s loading screens, but it takes a lot of time, especially if the game is a multiload (as I think Black Tiger is). I only did Le 5ème Axe because I believed it was a one-off request.

The original wasn't bad at all, but it was a screen adapted from spectrum, here one more fitting for CPC and consistent with the original. In homage to the illustrator Juan Giménez who passed away two years ago in the early stages of COVID-19.

Please everyone take care of not mixing the altered versions with originals within collections.
That would be dangerous for the preservation of the Amstrad legacy.

I keep on with the homage to Juan Giménez. Ke Rulen los Petas this time. Which could be roughly translated as: Keep the Joints Going On. The old times where censorship was almost non-existent with videogames in Spain.
Here's also a CDT with the alt screen.

Here's a crack of Bruce Lee with @Brundij's new loading screen in DSK format.

There are a couple of bugs in the game that can occur if you play it for a long time, but the crack fixes these. :)

It's been a while so I made a couple more:
I didn't know Livingstone Supongo had a different loading screen on PC so I adapted it for the lulz. And Mr Heli didn't have a loading screen.
