That mock up sucks.  Was done quickly just to see if I could get the Speedball 2 perspective working on player sprites of 8x16 Mode 0 sprites.  And... eh... sorta.  Can see where their limbs and head are and whether they're looking to the front or to the back but... I dunno.

Would look better in motion with them animated running about and beating the shazoola out of each other...

Sure, but animated mock-up is useless... Better to work on the game itself.
I spoke more about the players render that match nice ; After, many things can be improved for a real game.

I guess the palette should be worked differently for a SB2 graphic pack.

SB2 is really a lot into grey... which CPC doesn't have almost at all...

My 2 cents :

keep the grey only for the ball and players... the terrain would then be other hues (cyan ? blue ?).

as a result the grey being limited to animated sprites, would separate them over the background.
Not unlike the C64 version IMO... except that those sprites would have less limitations in number of colours.

graphically i believe the playing game arena in speedball 1 is far superior to speedball 2

im not talking about the sprites of the players i am referring to the actual playing area the area your characters move about on.

for my 2 cents speedball 2 is graphically weak in this area its just some lines that are confusing at best.

also for my extra 2 cents the playing area and the sprite of the ball in speedball one looks much more futuristic and has a 'deadly' image / atmosphere to it.

tried some slight editing... should work on a proper sprite sheet indeed...

lets find some :

Indeed, of course I didn't want to meant that Speedball 2 is cute ;) but anyway you wrote my thought here.  :)

edit, i'd add "dirty","used"..

I think I'm in Bizarro-world here...

Nope.  It's actually got a scheme of somewhat desaturated 'metallic' blues and cyan of which the CPC has a decent range of for an 8-bit.

The CPC grey is a very neutral colour which makes it far more suitable for a fullscreen background than the blues and more fitting for (plus it's not all grey as the pitch in Speedball 2 has colours for markings and different zones in cyans and blues).  Bolder colours on the players make them pop out more from the backdrop.

Speedball 1 Arena (horrible, repetitive grid design and bland colours)

Speedball 2 Arena (gorgeous pixelling especially on the walls and much improved colour usage and it looks like an actual sports field)

I did type a reply to cpc4eva but I just think I'm wasting my time there because I don't want to argue all day about how Speedball 2 was one of the most beautifully designed games of the 16 bit era whereas Speedball 1 feels like it was programmed and pixelled by kids and not even talented kids.

all im saying is that speedball 1 arena in my opinion with its grids is far more appealing than speedball 2 arena with its ridiculous lines ...

also on the speedball 1 arena you have the domes, the random cannon and the darkened blue grids it makes it more atmospheric, futurisitic and  deadly than those lines on speedball 2

unsaturated colours... coloured greys...which CPC doesn't actually have. ;D
but yeah no doubt CPC palettte can handle something decent anyway. ;)

So, from my souvenirs... I used to have this game on my old EGA PC... sucks but could be helpfull actually... I mean, the palette is basically a limited Spectrum like CGA palette in 16 inks... can give ideas.

here, I also tested some repalette in CPC, briefly as only half the pictures are repaletted (unmodified 320x200 though)

I love how they would always screw the EGA version because of CGA compatibility, even the crude 16 colour palette could do so much better if inks are sorted and used the right way...
