Any Space Harrier experts on here?

Been clicking away at this for a while and I'm lucky if I can get to level 6. Am I missing something here or is it just extremely tough?

And don't suggest a cheat. I don't use them.
Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?

I could never get anywhere in this game at all, so I'm going to go with "too tough".
CPC6128 modded with ABBA switch. External 5.25" floppy drive with side switch and Multiface 2. Now also sporting a joystick splitter and M4 WiFi board.

Back in the days when cpczone was around, we had a high-score comp on Space Harrier.
The only way to do well at the game is to learn the enemy patterns.
Once you start to memorise the waves, it becomes much easier.
Pity it doesn't have autofire.

You know what? I would LOVE to see this happen more often. High score competitions for games. Hey @Gryzor , think we can make this happen?

Yeah I'm trying to study the alien patterns, but then trees and mushrooms etc get in the way.
Definitely interesting to get input from other players though. So it is appreciated.

Sure, why not? It'd probably be a subforum with threads on each game? Could also be promoted on the wiki, perhaps with the weekly winner's grinning mug adorning our screens :D

-Is there enough interest?
-What would be the rules?
-Who'd be the judge(s)?

Sounds like a good idea to me. I of course would fail miserably at getting any decent scores, but I'm sure lots of better players would take part. ;)

I guess we could take a poll and see who is interested? I'm hoping there will be, as well as maybe give new members a way to participate as not everyone is a hardware headcase (no disrespect guys, I love the work done by the hardware guys!)

What would be the rules?
Good question. Although we did it before with a game recently and it went down quite well. As long as no cheats are used. Anyone can poke a game and rack up a score. But I'm sure we could get people to weigh in.

Who'd be the judges?
It's a high score contest. Do we really need judges? Set a start date and an end date and whoever gets the highest score by the cut off time wins? Just like an arcade HST? I dunno.

May be worth throwing a poll in a separate thread in case there's no Space Harrier fans here looking at the thread. =D

Back in the day I managed at least level 9.

It's tough but keep moving, never double back on yourself and avoid the scenery. It is annoying that so much of the scenery on the CPC version cannot be avoided.

Memorising the attack waves helps. It's decent enough but frankly in 2017 no reason to touch it compared to the arcade original. While I adored it at the time, it doesn't stand up when you have the arcade version at your fingertips. Unlike, say, Powerdrift which is an enjoyable CPC racer in its own right.

Level 9 is definitely a challenge. One for later tonight or possibly tomorrow. Disagree with the last statement though. I enjoyed both the CPC and the Arcade version. To get the speed of the CPC version was a feat in itself, despite the vector graphics.

But then, people still sing the praises of the slow, plodding Elite in all it's vector glory, so it's horses for courses. =)

Lazy Dude

I thinkI would just add that it would affect scores depending on what hardware is used.
Lets face it anyone using modern keyboards and joysticks on an emulator will potentially make higher scores than using original leaf contact joysticks.
Just a thought, then hi scores could be in two categories, original hardware and emulator.

I can honestly say, I could never see any difference in control regardless if I used emulation or real hardware. But that's just me.

I'm up for this, I normally get to at least level 19 before crashing out.
