Title: Daley Thompson's Supertest - CPC Vs Speccy
Post by: Travis P on 19:52, 20 June 12
I've been playing Daley Thompson's Supertest on both the Amstrad and ZX Spectrum computer via emulators this week. For some strange reason I find the Speccy version easier to qualify for events but with the Amstrad version it has been a right bitch to get your speed up in most events with the use of joystick wagging and pressing keys constantly. Has anybody had experiences where the same game has had different difficulties depending on the computer, especially this one?

It's not really CPC related, but one of my favourite games - "Attack of the Mutant Camels" is a great game on the Atari XL/XE, but it's really difficult on the C64 which takes away from the enjoyment. It was never released on the CPC (unfortunately).

I've been playing the CPC version of Supertest for like 20 years or something and I've only just about got the hang of the diving! It's a fuckin' bastard that game lol

Tell me about it. I'm sure it's impossible to score 65 points across three dives. The most I ever scored was 9! The instructions say you need to time bouncing on the diving board with the fire button.  I remember when we first played Day 1 (I was around 9-10 years old). I would easily qualify in the pistol shoot event but I would get my dad to waggle the joystick like mad to qualify in the cycling event. He was a strong bloke but even that event knackered him. Also, what was with the events in Day 2? It was nothing but a waggle fest.

P.S. Great video reviews you posted the other day. Keep up the good work. Amsoft games were pretty crap.

Of course it was. There was a whole category (probably sponsored by joystick manufacturers) to it. Apparently people (myself included) liked them, for some reason. Who knows, maybe it was the novelty?

Not really, IMO. Some of them were outright good. Some of them were just very early examples. And some were deceiptably simplistic, but good - like Oh Mummy.

Of course there were some attrocities in the pile as well, but I don't think we shoul trash Amsoft altogether...

Definitely was a bloody waggle fest! For example, the ski jump! What the hell was that about!? I think I only qualified ONCE in that event and that was just out of pure luck! Same with the penalties event, just waggle like hell and hope for the best haha :P

Glad you liked my reviews :) Thanks for watching them! More will be coming soon!

Haha, maybe I only played the shit Amsoft games :)

Sorry, I should've re-phrased it as "some Amsoft games were pretty crap". As you said, some were pretty good. I liked Oh Mummy, Roland on the Ropes, Roland Ahoy, Splat, Amsgolf and Sultans Maze to some extent. I think I beat the maze and the anagram on one occasion. Yes, there were some bad ones. I think Bridge It takes the title as the worst one they made.

Speaking of Supertest though.... I am actually planning a special episode called "The Flonkolympics" which is basically just gonna be a big Supertest tournament, just for shits and giggles. Just gonna do it with a couple of my friends first but I think maybe one day have like a massive forum meet up with all the CPC enthusiasts together in one big party playing Supertest and drinking beer! :D

This could be a nice topic for a new thread - which games did you use as tournaments? I used to have Match Day II leagues for instance :)

Do it for money too just to get a bit more competitive.  Not too much.  Used to have a lot of Street Fighter II Turbo on SNES tournaments after school in the 90's.  Everyone used to put in a pound or two in a jar and the winner of the tournament often took those winnings home which were usually about a tenner.  Most that was won was £30 one Friday night.  I came second that time, dammit  :(

30 quid was one full price ST/Amiga game, no? Pretty nice...

I think most new full priced releases were around £24.99 but some cost a bit more.  Though often you'd find them cheaper when the SNES and Mega Drive stuff started taking over the local game shop just so they could compete more.

Used to play SNES Street Fighter 2 and the loser had to neck a shot of Jack Daniels! It was a great laugh!

Just checked the YouTube vids - the Atari version is pretty sexy, but the C64 looks terrible. Would be nice to have a CPC version.

I was never into the sports (joystick waggler) games. I remember winter sports on the atari st and that was hard enough.

The firing sound and general game sound on the Atari version was also much better than the C64. I have the original Atari Defender Cartridge with original instructions, box etc. One of my most prized pieces of software :)

It's because most arcade games use AY/YM chips.
So it was the orriginal song, or realy close too... Not easy for the SID in this case. ;)

atari 8-bit (which I believe Bryce was talking about) has the "pokey" as it's sound chip.
it's different to ay and sid.

Now, the Atari-ST did have YM.

True many arcade games had AY/YM chips.

True, although TotO is still kind of correct because the Pokey was used in some arcade games too :)

Yup, it made sense that Atari would use it. Asteroids and Missile command if I'm not mistaken?

I remember I used to have the same blue Adidas "velvet" sweater (and pants, it was an ensemble) as Daley wears on the cover.
Those were the typicall must have in the 80's, and very comfortable...

Yeah, comfortable enough for both the Decathlon and eating potato chips on the couch or sitting before a CPC :D

Blasphemy!

Scorcery+ was an amazing game and I'm also a big fan of Roland In Time.
