Title: deva drifter (racing game)
Post by: roudoudou on 17:02, 07 July 20
here is a new game from Alberto
very fun to play, first time as far as i know there is subpixel drawing for sprites (and it's done great!)
music menu is probably ripped from another machine (the tone shift is really really bad, my ears are bleeding)
anyway, enjoy this :)

Thanks for the heads up! I enjoyed Vector Vaults so I'll definitely check this one out....
EDIT: Anyone tempted by the physical release? Yours for only €69...  :o

I played it and i liked it a lot, congratulations!
It is a very enjoyable game, well made i believe.
I think that 69 euros are a lot for a physical release, but at least there are other options available (free game or digital game).

I'll have to down load this and give it a go, what does subpixel mean?

this subpixel will be obvious when playing  ;)
the car looks like it can have a multiple positions from a pixel to another
here is an example in mode 0 https://youtu.be/Ymj_4E9uEpw?t=6205

I don't understand French and so don't understand what you're saying in this video, but your pictures and English comments in the source codes explain some things. Very interesting. Thanks for it.

Sub-Pixels on the good old Amstrad/Schneider CPC. Who would have thought that?

I really liked Vector Vaults so I had to try this. The engine looks very impressive though it could use 'prettier' gfx.

Sometimes the car flickers into oblivion under WinAPE, is it only me?

Also, €69? Damn...

Holy crap. I would think 29E is a bit steep, but this is quite surreal :)

I haven't downloaded this yet, but the movement of the car is incredible!

When animating a car, you would normally draw each angle (6 degree angle, 12 degrees, 25 degrees, 33 degrees, 45 degrees etc) in order to simulate a smooth "rotation" when the car is turning. In order to make the car look smooth when turning, you would have to draw a lot of angles which would mean a lot of frames. Super Sprint is an example of this. When the car turns, you can see that it is not smooth:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RdVAUCpVv4o

Here is a sprite sheet (different machine, but the sprites angles will be the same)

https://www.spriters-resource.com/fullview/94436/

To make the cars look smoother, you can use sub pixelling it instead, which  will take "each individual" pixel of the car and shift it to the left ,right,up or down depending on which way the car is turning (if my thinking is correct) resulting in the most smoothest of motion possible.

As you can see in Deva Drifter, the car rotates at maximum smoothness compared to the cars in Super Sprint, Skid Marks, Ivan Stewarts Off Road Racer etc.

Yes, I though that was a typo because 3.9€ the digital version, then 6.9€ the floppy disc?
So, I have asked and my question was moderated and the price left unchanged. :-\

I am sure the seller has good reasons (encourage digital sales, etc..), otherwise, I see that price, 69€, deserves another physical format, dandanator or similar.... But, of course, he is free to sell as he wants..

Of course he's free to sell as he sees it fit, and we have the right to judge :D

I'd understand such a price if the package was pretty deluxe to be honest; for such a bare-bones release, I wonder who would buy it.

...oh, hello, @XeNoMoRPH (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1952) :D

Pity that backgrounds add a basic feelings.
When i remember release like rtype128, operation alexandra, orion prime... With great packaging, goodies at a great price i'm disappointed with this one, 69E for an emptyness feeling.
I will sure buy the digital deluxe edition instead.

I can imagine he just need to sell 5x Deva Drifter to make more money than 100x Orion Prime copy. :o

Next, don't be surprised that AAA CPC games will cost 90+ euros and CPC 250+ euros.  :-\

Actually, I am disappointed I came back to CPC scene late.., and I was not able to buy an Orion Prime copy, a new edition would be great...

Does Micro Machines on the NES use this sort of subpixel rotation, or are there just a lot of sprites? Or does the NES have hardware sprite rotation?

just watched a NES video of micro-machine, no subpixel neither a "lot" of sprite. There is a limited number of rotations, sprites are conventional GFX, no hardware rotation
