Ah sorry... of course I should always add that information: I use a Macbook Pro and Chrome.

Weirdly enough, I tried again right now and the sound works. Not sure what is different now as I definitely refreshed several times.



One thing: Would it be possible to change the FIRE key to a different key, e.g. SHIFT, instead of CTRL? On a MAC the combination CTRL+up activates Mission Control and CTRL+left/right switches between desktops. This pretty much kills any game. It can be disabled in the system settings but it might be show-stopper for MAC users to play games if they first have to deactivate those features.


And thanks for making sound work. It's o much more fun with sound.

I've been playing Hyper Sports on my CPC emulator and noticed something strange in the first event (swimming). The game requires alternating left/right key presses as quickly and regularly as possible to make the swimmer move forward.

However, I've observed that even when I press the keys at a steady rhythm, the swimmer's speed seems inconsistent — sometimes he moves faster, sometimes slower, without really matching the actual input speed.

My question is:
👉 For those of you who play Hyper Sports on a real Amstrad CPC (not through emulation), do you experience the same behavior? Is this just how the game was designed, or could it be an emulator-specific issue?

If you think the swimming event is inconsistent in terms of the controls, wait til you get to the skeet shooting event because, in my opinion, you pass it if you're very lucky.

Basically, don't try to understand it. You'll go crazy trying to.

Is the weightlifting event even possible to complete? @Xyphoe attempted it in his longplay video and he had to slow the emulator down to 50%, and even then he barely managed to complete the event. Amstrad Maniaque doesn't have any longplay of Hyper Sports on his YouTube channel either (and yes, I know he has a reputation for cheating on some of his videos).

I also tested this game earlier this year and I couldn't complete the weightlifting event without cheating in some way. I even examined the code to see if there was any way for me to alter it to make it easier! (I didn't succeed.)

So it's not the emulator... the game was simply broken from the start.

I never figured out the weightlifting event, and I almost never survive the pommel horse. Even if you mash the keys like crazy, luck seems more important than skill.
Maybe back in the day players thought the same... or just blamed themselves for being bad.

HA! Yes. I said so in the commentary and left people to try and guess... and left a comment on the video eventually as to how I did it - putting emulator speed down to 50%.
And to make matters worse the game is glitched/broken!! Even though you get the '3 lights' from the 3 judges to show you completed lifting the weight... (1) the game gives you an X for a fail and (2) initiates a game over and takes you back to the title screen/name entry screen to start over again!! Even if you have more attempts left and more weights to try. 

 

So it's completely bugged too!!

It is possible but you need to be very fast and have a decent stick. I used a Zipstick and was shocked that it didn't break. I only ever did it the one time however, so I'm chalking it down to sheer dumb luck. But as I've said on so many occasions, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

I also remember having to memorise the score to write it down because it literally goes to the name entry screen afterwards, no congratulations screen, nothing. And unless you memorised your score, there's no way of seeing it again!

After playing Hyper Sport for several hours today, I noticed that, in addition to the gameplay issues, there is also a problem with the score display.

In the pommel horse and triple jump events, the displayed score is not synchronized with the score stored in memory. The same issue occurs in the final weightlifting event, making it impossible to view the correct final score.

To address this on my website, I implemented automatic score saving based on the score stored in memory rather than the displayed one. This way, the recorded scores accurately reflect the points achieved, even after the weightlifting event.
