Quote from: TFM on 21:22, 13 August 13What is the difference between a real life super hero and other super heroes?

Other super heroes are fiction, and they usually have supernatural powers. E.g. ability to fly or shoot lasers out of their eyes etc.

The "real life" super heroes are not fiction. They're real, and running around in the streets at night. None of them claim to have any super powers though. So it's a bit like Kick-Ass as far as I can see.

At first you'd think they're crazy loonies (and some probably are), but when you hear what they have to say, then you might change your mind.

Just giving Deactivators a go, I have finally bothered to work out how this game operates, I have to say it is a pretty good arcade  puzzle game, I am a little disappointed that very early on in the game screens are upside down etc.. which I find a bit annoying and unnecessary. There is enough about the game to not need to confuse matters even more by inverting things. Maybe later on yes when you are trying to ramp the difficulty up.

Some days ago I've been in the Barcadia, and they had an original Tron arcade machine looking like new. A game is two quarters; and I don't think it got enough recognition.

Play - Bacardia New Orleans

Which one? Discs of Tron was the best in my opinion, although the other one was also not bad ,with the multi-games on it ! I was a bit disappointed with the Amstrad Discs conversion which was a little sluggish.

There's a two-page interview with the designers of Deactivators in the latest issue of Retro Gamer (#119) - which I thought was an interesting coincidence after I had just reviewed it on CPC Game Reviews! :D One of them, Chris Palmer, stated that "we hit the players with too much too soon. The game would have benefitted from a more gentle learning curve of some of the trickier gameplay elements."

I had never played Deactivators before I reviewed it because it looked too complicated. Once I understood it, I spent hours playing it! :) It really is an underappreciated gem, and according to the designers, it didn't sell well at the time.

Puresox

Bloody hell, that is coincidental! I'll have to check that out, cheers for the heads up!

EgoTrip

I just remembered one of the best games ever for the CPC, that is completely overlooked and underrated:

Skate Crazy! Just been giving this a go! What a nice bit of programming this game was ! A game to be proud of on the Amstrad ,Multi-directional  scrolling that is smooth, great controls, stunning solid graphics.  I had forgotten how much of a pleasure this game is to play!
On the other hand Pneumatic Hammers? Anyone know what to do in this game and is it worth working out? Not really looked into the instructions of this yet but interested to hear if the game has any hidden worth...?

MIG 29
Roland on the ropes

Hey that 'Killed until Dead' is a great little game, never come across it before , Really well put together game!
Another game I have been checking out, which I have never given any time too before, (because I never enjoyed the original) is Mario Bros, I think despite its ugly graphics this is a pretty good port of Mario Bros, Plays pretty close to the original.

Gryzor

I loved Thanatos too, even though like Mr. Lou I had no idea what I was doing. However, it was not an obscure game, I think it was quite a success.

@TFM: rubbish. Thanatos was not the god of Death. Thanatos, the son of Night and Darkness (lovely story - had to ask my girl for this info) was just a minor supernatural entity (for lack of a better term - ancient Greeks did use the word 'deity' for a lot of stuff but a distinction can be made between proper Gods and other outwordly supernatural creatures). Also the brother of Sleep, he was the *bringer* of death, rather than its personification. The word itself comes from the Greek word "θνήσκω" (pronounced thneesko), which means, simply, to die. In a metaphor it can be used to mean "to be destroyed" as can easily be inferred, but that's not a translation. I actually opened up my huge Ancient Greek dictionary to check it out. In post-freudian theory (Freud himself did not use it AFAIK) Thanatos refers to the death drive, which yes, has connotations of destruction as a psychoanalytical tool, but again is not destruction itself as a word.

To get back on topic (sorry, still catching up after summer vacation), I loved Knight Games . A bit slow, but as a two-player game it sure is fun!

Puresox

Knight Games ? Never played that 2 player.
Exterminator- Did that do well back in the day? I think that is a really competent little game that looks cool 2 player also?

TMR

i really like Killer Cobra... just saying, like. =-)

dcdrac

Knight Games was aa good diversion for a little while but not over a long period, a nice collection of mini games with a nice medieval theme to it.

Gryzor

Yeah, that's why I said it was good with 2 players.

Or maybe it is just me, playing it with my dad back in my day... *sigh*

Having a look at Knight Games , I can imagine it being a great 2 player game, It definitely plays a lot better than many other fighting games on the Amstrad ! It's pretty good package.

Bumped this thread purely cos I have a severe case of insomnia tonight ,and Have a hard days graft tomorrow just to put the tin hat on it. Been giving the Amstrad version of Chips Challenge a good go and have knocked off 53 levels so far. I don't know how well this game was received  on the CPC . I was introduced to it via the Atari lynx, which was, I think the original and a top notch game to boot.
In respect to the Amstrad version, although they haven't  brought the best out of the machine,Epyx have done a reasonable good job IMO, The Scrolling lets it down the most, which is a little plodding but the main elements of this great puzzle solving of every, variety are all there in abundance. I think it has around 144 levels? It gives you a great satisfaction  in getting through some of them as well! The recent couple of top 16k competition definitely has a nod in the same direction I think.

I vaguely recall AA giving this game a Rave, and ACU reviewed it when they were giving almost everything the thumbs up.
* Using the old Amstrad Languages :D   * with the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

Iron Traker's by Microids. Has anyone played this? I cannot for the life of me get the game to start. It has a great little title page with mouse style selections to build your character which is pretty cool for an Amstrad game and you can soup up your Quad bike etc... But I do not seem to be able to get to race?
I am finding that Microid's as a company could do some great things with the Amstrad. But they could not seem to make a good game. Highway Patrol has some great animation and the driving part of the game is really well done in my opinion, better than a lot of other car simulators. It just doesn't have a game to engross you.

Gryzor

Chip's Challenge was greatly promoted for the Lynx where it plays and looks great indeed, but it never managed to catch my attention for very long. Maybe I should give the CPC version a go!

I don't know whether this game went down well at the time or what? But I thought I'd have to mention Space Harrier, I reckon this is a great conversion, even though it was bravely done with Vector style graphics, It is a really playable game that totally captures the feel of the arcade game , the vectors are a little ugly but they perform well , the hit detection seems pretty tight . I enjoy this version more than the Space Harrier 2 version , which is also good in it's own right. my high score so far is 2088693 btw.

I came across this game on the Giant Bomb called "Jim Power in Mutant Planet" which Loriciel released back in 1992, I had no idea it existed until now.
I downloaded the hacked copy only to find I could only play Level 1 until I got to the end and the Disc Drive starts loading the next lot of data until nothing happens, though I noticed CPC Power has an Original copy of the Disc on their site which I'll check out.
The game plays like "Invasion of the Zombie Monsters", but I think it plays a bit better than that because there doesn't seem to be the problem of things appearing at Random Spots and dying because your gun isn't in the correct area. Like Zombie Monsters though Jim has to reach a certain spot otherwise it maybe a long way return to the start, the graphics are really good in Jim Power and I didn't find any issues with Jim's Running/Jumping, the beginning is quite tricky though where Jim has to jump across to the platform avoiding the spikes, I think the Scrolling is on par with Zombie Monsters.

Time to weigh in here.:
Comments on games already mentioned -

Skate Crazy: Loved this, It was essentially two games in one, but the car park challenge was impossible to control, i felt.

Legend Of Kage: The arcade of this was weird enough. Once you figured out what you had to do (which was essentially kill, kill and kill some more), the levels got easy and it was very easy to finish.

My two cents -

They Stole a Million: Loved the idea of planning and casing the joint. It wasn't pretty to look at, but for a game of this magnitude, it wasn't really designed for pretty graphics. The fact that you could control the boss and do what you want also added to the fun.

Deflektor: This was pretty awesome, but it only ever seemed to be treated like a flash in the pan.

I also really enjoyed Techno Cop.

Currently playing on: 2xCPC464, 1xCPC6128, 1x464Plus, 1x6128Plus, 2xGX4000. M4 board, ZMem 1MB and still forever playing Bruce Lee.
No cheats, snapshots or emulation. I play my games as they're intended to be played. What about you?

sigh

Yeah! Skate Crazy is fantastic. The car park challenge was my favourite bit and I was pretty darn good at it.
