Well yes, both are great BBC games, but from different authors and publishers.

The first computer we had was for the whole family and was a BBC Micro B. So I enjoyed many games from this platform, and I would really love to convert many of these for the CPC (Repton, Frak, Zalaga, Imogen are a few I really enjoyed).

Amstrad was the second computer, but the first that was only for me, and for which i worked hard to pay for ( I lost count of the number of times I washed the car or mowed the lawn).

So I hoped to do a conversion with permission, but so far nobody has agreed :(

I'd love to do one of Imogen, but I don't want to ask for permission and be declined.

Well I don't know on what basis the others were declined, but it looks like Imogen had a PC remake by Ovine by Design a few years ago, maybe there's a better chance of that one having permission granted?

My only experience with the BBC range was in school.  Green screens and educational software.  :-\  So I cant really relate to them as a games platform but from what I've seen in the last couple of years they look much more capable than I realized.  I really like the look of this, for example.

Absolutely Street Fighter II, the commodore 64, and spectrum 128, have recived a conversion of this game... The spectrum version is realy good ...

Bye all

Although it looked faithful in the sprite department, playability wise I much prefer the MSX version.

Shows Ryu and dhalsim.

I think this is done really well. The background is fixed and the sprites are small, all the special moves are in and the speed is quick. Possible on a CPC?

Wasn't the MSX version a Japanese production ?

(Capitano Obvio el savior del  Diaz...)

No wonder the MSX is not MSuX. ::)

Also What MSX is it ?
2 ? 2+ ? TurboR ?

Optimus

Wasn't there some kind of Street Fighter 2 remake already done for the CPC?

Though, I have to confess it's bad and someone tells me it's replacement of graphics in the original Street Fighter 1, so it's not the real deal.

Xyphoe

PITFALL

....please.... that should be relatively easy to do :)

I'm thinking of old Atari classics that could be converted, eg the HERO conversion was brilliantly done -

River Raid would be nice.

OH and a really good version of Zaxxon would be nice!!!

sigh

Well NES had its own version:

Sykobee (Briggsy)

I like the look of Exerion.

A prime candidate for a 32x32 screen. I think it would all need redrawing every frame but there's only three rows of background images at a time. I expect the ground could be done with a raster - if there's a suitable raster-meister around :-)

The NES version looks awful, scrolling by half-characters because of how its graphics system works.

Ooh I second that! Pitfall would be nice - and, preisely sice HERO was so nice, too, it'd be presumably quite feasible...

After looking at "Techno Cop" platforming sections on the Xyphoe's review, it got me wondering about a cpc version of Rolling Thunder 2:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XY_mY75m5o4&feature=related

..go straight to 1:20
Rolling thunder 2 is a slow paced "walk and gun game" with the player sprites containing a very limited more set of 8 animations:

Walk
Duck
jump
High Jump
Standing shoot
Duck and shoot.
Die
Hit

I reckon that that this would make a fantastic arcade conversion.

There's also "Elevator Action 2" which contians smaller sprites, but has multidirectional scrolling and quicker gameplay.

Quote from: Optimus on 23:46, 22 March 11I really loved Knytt Stories on the PC ( http://nifflas.ni2.se/?page=Knytt+Stories ). It's such a cute platform/exploration game with minimalism and ambient sounds. It's simple but dreamy. I like this minimalism of the colors, the dark/bright contrasts, the sounds. I was thinking how something similar (still not a faithful conversion to the original but just a game with similar style and inspiration) would be done on CPC. I was thinking of a similar wide screen, overscan on X and smaller height on Y with very small sprites as the original. And then because of the small sprites and no scrolling, maybe there is time for using many raster colous in Mode 1. In their screens, there is usually one background layer that is raster sky colours, then another that is usually another single colour (black mountains or structures, contrasting with the foreground, could be also having their own darker raster colours) and then the foreground tiles and characters. Might still be tricky to use the two colours for the backgrounds and only have two additionals for the sprite and the foreground. So, this is something I am thinking about trying to code. My only curiosity is. Can similar sounds be produced on the CPC that give the same ambience and dreamy feeling as the original? They don't have to be high quality as the PC, they can be just CPC sounds but made in an appropriate way to sound a bit dreamy. Also, I notice there is a second digital ambient noise on the PC that adds to the music (which can be leafs sound, water sound, wind, etc) that adds to the ambience. Maybe this is too much. I am not a musician so I don't know..

I know Knytt Stories because the girlfriend has played it a lot. I don't find Knytt Stories that exciting, but his other game Within a deep forrest, is one I've been playing a lot.

I would like to see something similar to those games on the CPC as well. Have thought about that style for the CPC often. So I'm with you.

The music and sound effects in those games are made by highly skilled geek-musicians. And as you say, the CPC obviously can't produce music in that quality.

But I do believe, that creating an ambient atmosphere can be done. Check out Radzone. The levels that only contains a few sounds and such really adds a lot to the game I think. Difficult to explain. Try the game.

Mat-tv can be converted to amstrad cpc?,was a great strategy game and very dificult. It release en 1991 in amiga and pc.One day when you wiew the tv you see a girl, and you you fall in love.So yo pick up a job in tv channell to conquist them. But other two love she.

Back to topic...

Populous !!!

I (re)discovered recently that the SegaMasterSystem have a port of populous.
Also at the time I read in magazine that populous couldn't be done on machinesl ike CPC due to lack of Memory...

On SegaMS this is basically an EGA graphical port (same palette on SMS) but in 256x192 resolution.

Because today's CPC world may have access to such thing as 512K ROM for PLUS computers (and Man in the middle Cartridges ?)
This game would be quite suitable on PLUS/GX4000...

Gotta have a look at SegaMS's Z80 code...then...

Why Plus ?

ROM = easier way for such a large and complicated game which may simply be to big for only 128K RAM (or even 64K) alone.

Graphics = easier to port thx to extra palette.

HardSrpites = some extra features (special followers sprites (knight), "Mouse" cursor and so on.

Mode0 = quite suitable for isometric graphics... ok bloky large pixels but Sega is 256x192 like a speccy... On Amstrad we may use a redimensionned screen or even full screen... 192x272 Mode0 could be more than suitable...

Mode1 = simpler way to port graphics... it would then be a simple sytraight CGA port actually... but hey, 16 coulours IS better...

So yeah, less detailed graphics but actually better resolution equivalent (256x192 is speccy... on Amstrad we are 320x200 "equivalent" in mode 0... so if graphics (tiles and sprites) a cleverly designed, this is actually bigger screen...

Basically, the game could really be as smooth as SMS's version... with some better playability thx to keyboards shortcuts or even Mouse.

There is no such thing as smooth scrolling needed...
And the good RAM compaired to a console can greatly help (in addition to ROM...)

I think that the Sega MS cartridge might feature some extra RAM on the other hand.

there you can play online emulation of SMS' Populous.

CGA version (mode1 like)

Hercules Version (lol)

And VGA of course...

Also there : a fast mockup on CPC old in mode1 with a better palette than the CGA thx to the CPC's freedom on inks.

Also I found this interesting site :
http://www.yarrcade.com/category/game-development/grids/

seems to features a lot of method for Populous like engines...
May be interesting for CPC...
And actually interesting for any Isometric stuff... (Marbble Madness anyone ?)

I think the classic of clasic need cpc verstion ¡new rally X!

I love this game.And is z80 powered.

Gryzor

Well, if someone could get the flawless scrolling right...

scooby1970

I'd like to see a CPC conversion of Alex Kidd (the first Master System version). I think the CPC could handle it and do it justice. I also think the CPC needs a decent version of Pacman, surely it could be written almost arcade perfect in this day and age on a CPC!

BubbleBus' version was not half bad, though the layout was fictional IIRC.
