Great news, thanks for all your effort and making this available.

Is this an initial release?  Will you still be working on it to improve it?

Superb stuff Xifos! Just played on my 6128 Plus! Love it even if it is just as hard as the original arcade game!

So glad you continued and finished this!

This is an incredible version of GnG !

As Difficult as Arcade version, i didn't manage to kill the 2 boss of the second level.

Thanks for your hard work  :D

It works very well on my CPC6128+  ;)

Many, many thanks for this great conversion !

EDIT: it works even on my CPC464+, is it a 64k only game ?

I found a little bug (i think that one  :) )

When i shoot with weapon which is not a knife, the current shoot cancel the previous.

Then if i shoot permanently, my weapon cannot reach the ennemy at the far right of the screen.
Title: Re: Ghosts'n Goblins GX4000 final alpha version !
Post by: Xifos on 18:53, 28 April 18
It's not a bug, it's a feature !
;)
I did that because you can only fire one weapon at a time.

There are others bugs, but they won't prevent you to play...

This is fantastic! I mean, I know that is still an alpha, but it plays and looks awesome and I easily find this already one of the 8 bits renditions of the game. Lots of respect to you. These type of conversions also make me wonder how nice it would have been to have the Plus range a few years earlier...

It's not really an alpha...
I wrote that for joking sorry (final alpha).
It's a way for me to say that it could have been better.
But for now i don't think i can improve it.

Without question, the best Amstrad GX4000 and Plus game ever made, you must be very proud. I wish you were programming games back in the day [emoji1303] I've nearly finished it, very close to other versions I've played.

Totally agree, if this game was released at the time of the CPC+, i would have been a mega hit on this computers.

Reached third level, i love this game from my arcade memories.

I would have liked the original C64 soundtrack converted to AY for the title screen, but it is only my little whim  :)

Thanks again for CPC+ game.

Yep, playing it on my GX4000, so close to finishing now, didn't go to bed until four this morning. So far invested around twelve hours into it, spent about three hours running it along side the arcade and other versions just for comparison [emoji23]

This is a real gem and a dream come true for me... Thanks a billion.

Can I be so cheeky as to ask, what's next? [emoji12] The Amstrad needs a proper conversion of Green Beret [emoji849]

Had a few more games of this quality been available when the gx4000/plus range was launched it might of stood more of a chance to be successful.  Great work.

Hi Xifos, great work!!!!!!! I love it!

Can't wait to do a feature on it on my YouTube channel.

However I've encountered quite a bug! Beat the game, and you don't get the ending! :O

So yes I beat the boss the 1st time, and as expected it sent me back to level 1 to go through it all again. I defeated him again with the Shield weapon, but still gives me the "This room is an illusion..." and sends me back to level 1 again!  ??? ??? ???
You can see in the screenshot my score to show I've gone round twice already.

Oh wow, really?

Oh.
That's a shame.

Games that don't have an ending kinda trigger me a bit.  :'(

Can it not be added?
Have you ran out of memory?

It's not much, just Arthur hugging the Princess on the same screen as the boss fight, and some text overlayed - see attached from the arcade version.
Surely must be fairly trivial to add along with a counter to check that you've beaten the game once?

I really really appreciate your hard work on this, honestly, but no ending kinda really bums me out :(

Thanks

I must admit, hearing that there's no ending has really put me off trying to complete it now, I'm so close, but hearing that news makes we want to play the arcade version instead. I guess 64k is the problem, must have run out of memory.

I tried to complete Dark Fusion this evening, finally did it, only to find out it just eff'ing loops! That really miffed me off [emoji35] it is a shame that lots of Amstrad games have no ending, P47 did this to me as well...

I guess 64k is the problem, must have run out of memory.

I'm not so sure now -

"The cartridges can be fitted with different EPROMs in range of 32kb through 512kb, but only 128kb to 256kb versions are known to have been produced."
http://www.cpcwiki.eu/index.php/GX4000_cartridge

So technically I'm guessing the .cpr file could hold up to 256k of data - the problem with the GX4000 was that it only had 64kb of RAM, so a lot of data had to be swapped in and out for high class games.
Title: Re: Ghosts'n Goblins GX4000 final alpha version !
Post by: andycadley on 05:46, 01 May 18
A .cpr can have up to 512K of ROM in it (no real cartridge was ever that big, but the facility was there). The Z80 can access that ROM data directly, it doesn't need to copy it from the cartridge into RAM (like the C64 does), so 64K is actually a very generous amount of RAM and probably more than should be needed under normal circumstances.
Title: Re: Ghosts'n Goblins GX4000 final alpha version !
Post by: tjohnson on 06:58, 01 May 18
It looks like it would need a 256kb rom but judging by the size of the cpr hasn't used the entire 256kb.

Oh, I wasn't aware of that. Thanks! I've been under that misunderstanding then since I read years ago one of the Ocean guys moaning that it had to be all dealt with in the 64k RAM on the GX4000. He must have been confused with the Commodore 64 Games Systems, I guess probably an easy mistake after so many years.

I think the plus hardware can read up to 32 cartridge slots (16k), each slot has 16k banks, so I imagine a .cpr file can go up to 4mb?

That is SUPER COOL of you dude!

I think it's really awesome you're taking the feedback and going to look at it, because ultimately you'll end up being even more proud of your fine work and it'll feel 'finished' - you'll have closure on it. Plus you've not reacted negatively, which in cases in the past that has happened with some programmers here - and it's understandable because many many months of work has been put into it and at a point you just want to be done and over with it! And it's been done for free! So really, well done man. :)

I'd like to do a big video feature on it, so I will hold off for now. And don't be afraid to listen to Targhan's offer of help on the music too :)

Thank you :)

I will put off completing this until the new release is out! When a programmer or any professional can take good honest constructive criticism, that for me not only shows intelligence, but a high level of the most important intelligence, that quite often gets neglected, emotional intelligence. All right, all right...
I'll try to do un update including the screen ending.

Maybe it will include other improvments, but it will take time...

@Xifos (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=186)

Hi Xifos , I'm happy to hear that you're going to try and do a update to your great work to include the ending.  :D

Do you think it would be possible to add a pause option to the game? so that the console pause button works, no problem if you can't.

Yes, a pause button can be very useful while playing.

Ok guys, I've been hired to adapt the songs. I hope not to disappoint :) .

Not using the dma right?. I mean unfortunly not exist a modern music tool that supports the dma feature :( .

If this was created for selling in the 90 i add a demo mode when nothing is pressed in main menu screen, these help to sell consoles.

An ending, new music, pause button functionality, demo mode...

Just when poor Xifos was ready to move on with his life...  ;)

I hope @Xifos (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=186) doesn't get overwhelmed from doing the game, saying that, he will always be remembered in the Amstrad ( retro ) community for doing such a fantastic port, so sure it will be worth it.  8)

Another thing to consider would be a keyboard control option ( re-definable ) for plus users, as some people might prefer to play using keys.  ;)

Another suggestion would be a timeout on the continue screen so if the user doesn't respond with 10' seconds it returns to the title screen.

Quick replies !

At the continue screen, left/right with the stick to set yes or no (maybe you did not try this).

And the arkos player is modified to use dma (thanks to Ast).

See you guys, it seems that i have work to do !

I was thinking more along the countdown most arcade machines do,  unless a response in 10 seconds then assume no continue.

If only games could have been made this way in the 80s where we all have feedback [emoji23]

Nice ! That would not save a lot of CPU time but it is nice to see DMA used  ;D

Another further comment, on level 2 (as far as i have got)   i noticed the fire when an enemy is killed is brown, not red/fire like level 1.

I hope xifos doesn't mind this kind of feedback?

OK some more suggestions:

1) the music in the caves is terrible.... >:(

2) the lava/fire tiles could use some color cycle effect so that aren"t static!!

3) how about a "start" loading screen??

I managed to finish it using invisibility cheat..
Poke &47AE with &18 instead of &20 originally.
Warning: if you fall down you may need to deactivate cheat in order to continue the game.  8)

There's actually no pressure, he's already created the best Amstrad Plus game ever made! No one can ever argue otherwise. He seems like a real down to earth person, feet on the ground type of guy.

I agree, just saying, that someone could easily feel overwhelmed when people are asking for things to be done, like you said, there is no pressure and he seems like a down to the earth person.  ;)

I agree, and this extends to you as well, the work you've put into converting games to the GX is just as valuable as any new games, my whole family including my wife love playing the old CPC games on my GX, I take it everywhere these days. When I get Classic Invaders, my life will be complete [emoji23] I used to be able to get to level seven on that, my cousin could get to level 9 🤪

Great work!!!

P.S. I can't shoot in the tombstones.  ;D
