Title: Horror Games
Post by: Xyphoe on 05:05, 23 September 10
Following on from Mark's 'gory games' topic (http://cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php/topic,195.0.html (http://cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php/topic,195.0.html)), I'm trying to track down and get as many horror games, or at least horror themed on the Amstrad!

Here's the list I've come up with so far ... what am I missing out?
Cheers!

Friday 13th
Werewolves Of London
Zombi
Infernal Runner
Dracula / Frankenstein
Chiller
Bride Of Frankenstein aka Frankenstein Jnr
Night Hunter
Aliens
Ghosts N Goblins
Ghoules N Ghosts
Predator I / II
Altered Beast
Nightbreed
The Astonishing Adventures Of Mr. Weems And The She Vampires
Ghostbusters I / II / Real Ghostbusters
Ghost Hunters
Roland On The Ropes
Oh Mummy
Rocky Horrow Picture Show
Orion Prime
Arachnophobia
Space Gun
The Addams Family
Jaws
Nosferatu The Vampyre
Barbarian
Cauldron I / II / III
Gremlins I / II

*edit* added some more, some a bit tenuous tho!

If you think "Oh Mummy" is a horror game, then maybe you also think "Wriggler" (by Romantic Robot I think) is.
At least there are creepy spiders and other bugs in it.  :)

They contain ghosts and Egyption mummies..

Ok, they are not scary but they could be thought of as horror related.

If I remember correctly, Zombi had a sequel : Hurlement... no ?

Also splatter House...erh...oops...
Moonstone...erh... re-oops...

The Munsters perhaps ?
One Nanako escape from Hell ?
Scooby Doo ?

But as most video game features monsters, they could qualify to horror ...

you should put the list in alphabetical order...

Prince of persia perhaps (it seems quite bloody to me)  :)

Yea, the topics not about 'gory' games but ones with a horror theme ... Roland On The Ropes has vampire bats, skeletons, mummies and all sorts.
When the skeletons appeared playing this when I was 7 years old it scared the shit out of me! lol!  ;D

I'm making a vid of horror games on the Amstrad, and yes some of them there are rather tenuous but thought I'd start a list that covers as much as possible regardless then whittle it down.

eg Friday 13th will be included, but things like Barbarian (despite being gory) probably won't be.

Well, there are two 'horror' categories: the tongue-in-cheek horror, where you can see bats and skeletons and stuff like that but it's never supposed to be scary (7 year-olds don't count!), and then there's those games that genuinely try to instill anxiety and terror. Aliens could be one of those, and I think this is the list you should be going after...

Well, I would add to this list some french adventure games :

Le pacte
Orphée (your goal is to escape hells :-) )
Hurlements
Incantations

Momies blues (3d maze)
Momy (Softhawk)

That's all for now...

I still find Aliens to be genuinely scary. You're guiding your team around the spaceship, with a tune being played softly in the background, and then - the calm is broken by a loud alarm as an alien enters the room, and you have mere seconds to shoot it before it kills your crew! The atmosphere is tense throughout the game, and it's a credit to the programmers that they achieved this.

It's even more tense if you take too long and the spaceship's power supply fails, leaving your crew in nearly total darkness and unable to navigate your way around the ship! :o

Two more games are like that: Vindicator (well, the first level; very oppressive and silent and all), and (not released on the CPC, of course, but worth mentioning) Lost Patrol. Hair-raising moments with this one...

Alien (http://www.mobygames.com/game/alien_____)
Total Eclipse (http://www.mobygames.com/game/cpc/total-eclipse) (it had mummies that jumped out of coffins)
Castle Master 1 and 2 (http://www.mobygames.com/game/castle-master-castle-master-2-the-crypt) (I'm sure that had ghosts)
Scapeghost (http://www.mobygames.com/game/cpc/scapeghost)
Lurking Horror (http://www.mobygames.com/game/cpc/lurking-horror)

Cheers Betpet

Does "The Lurking Horror" have any urrr 'scary images' of stills that show or is it all text? I played a bit of Dracula text adventure for a bit last night and managed to see quite a few grisly cut scene images!

Lurking Horror is a classic Infocom adventure, so there are no pictures. But it's really scary.

Yes, there ARE text-adventures with pictures, but not from Infocom  ;)  (ok, starting 1988 they made few adventures with pix, but not for the CPC)

Yes indeed, it was a great vid. Thanks Xyphoe.

Is it a bit sad that I check youtube everyday for new cpc-related vids?

Incidentally, I've been put off horror movies since the day I watched Paranormal Activity.
That movie scared the living crap out of me.

I slept with one eye open and ears on full alert for 2 weeks after watching it.

Its that awesome? Then you probably dont want to watch Darkness Falls either:

Never mess with the toothfairy! Its a fairly lowbudget movie and pretty unknown actors, but i watch it pretty much every halloween. I remember being really scared of this one .. but today its probably pretty tame for a "scary" movie.

Saw the trailer of paranormal activity, seems to be a remake of the movie "The Entity", which shows a true story. You should be scared, it's more out there than we think - way more.

Darkness Falls looks quite interesting actually, despite the low average rating on imdb.
Thanks for the heads up.

After having tried several low-graded movies, I have vowed to never again watch anything that has a rating of below 6.5, and that's generous... Of course I don't always agree with the IMDB ratings, but 6.5 seems to be a definite cutoff point below which your two hours will be a waste...

Amen to that.

Also, Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/) is usually more accurate with their ratings.

Yes indeed, and actually their scores mean more.

I will never forget the rating that the latest Rambo had on IMDB  - somewhere around 8/10 or something. It's been a long-running joke in my house when we watch a great movie: "is it better than Rambo?" :D
