Hello guys,
I read in the latest RetroGamer that La Abadia has been released in english for the MSX (fan translation, of course). Since this looks like an awesome game I was wondering if we could use the english translation in any meaningful ways to port it to the CPC? Dunno, maybe by disk-editing the MSX image?
Any thoughts?

Yes I thought the same, but editing the cpc disk with the english translations ;)
Any Spanish friends in here who maybe know someone involved in the project? Maybe they could provide us with a resource file...?
Well, for the case of the parchment (intro and outro) or the info about the percent of game completed, there is no problem in the translation (how you can see in the snapshots for winape that i have attached), but not all the characters are in the font, because that instead of the"w" (a rare letter in spanish) is the "ñ" and that it's the reason of the corrupt red uppercase characters, too.
For the messages that appear during the game, there is a list with the words (encoded how the RSXs in CPC, last letter + $80) and other with the words that make up all the sentences. In the msx, they patched for printing the full sentences storaged in ascii. You can find a disassembly of the cpc version with comments (in spanish :P ) here (http://www.abadiadelcrimen.com/download/abadia_z80_dasm.zip).
I have attached a zip, with two (one with the parchments and the "info game over screen" with the msx english text) snapshots made in winape from the original 128KB version, the english translation of the instructions from the WOS and a few memory dumps with the CPC and the MSX texts. If somebody want to try, go on... in other case, you will have to wait a few months (more or less :D ) when i have finished all my projects ;)
Hmmm thanks for all the info!
Is there anyone with the technical ability to help (modify the font perhaps, patch the game)? I'm willing to do the legwork if needed...
any news?
I never played this game (don't speak spanish) and it look like an awesome cpc game!!
It Does look an epic game , but looks a little repetitive and samey , I'd love to find out it is not.
Another Game that looks epic is 'Iron Lord'? is that French only?

I believe an English version of Iron Lord was planned, but never released?
I know it appeared in that "overseas games" special in AA but I'm not sure they mentioned something like that...
IronLord by UBIsoft (1989)
Back in 1989 this was a very different time for the european Video Games industry...
I was before the Maastricht treaty so it was hard to have those "big games with lots of text" into international versions.
UBIsoft was just a French company, not the big international megacorpo it is nowadays.
I guess we can even see the gap between before and after the treaty.
UK's magazines (which one ?) even did some articles on this at the time.
Can someone hack into Iron Lord to see if changing the texts would be easier than for Abadia del Crimen ?
Amiga, ST and 16bit versins seems to have an English version.
C64 too.
Perhaps the CPC disk market was judged too small in other countries than France, remember that the Disk was mostly a French speciality.
C64 and Speccy were sold by huge millions elsewhere than in France.
And CPC in Spain or UK were most often 464 than 6128.
Being a big game in 2 complete 3" disk meant the game was expensive to sell (those disk were like 3x to 4x more expensive than 3"1/2 Floppies)
Not sure the game needs 128K though.
This is a five years bump. Maybe someone will be inspired?
Obviously the demand to play the game in English has slow down thanks to the availability of the modern remake, but I'm sure many people wish to experience it on their CPC, where it all began. I know I do. The game has cult status in Spain, surely it's not for nothing.
So that it's not a completely useless bump, here's a little something to use with a 3.5 disk calendar case:
[attach=2]
Thanks for the lovely cover, khaz (a bit ironic that it's in Spanish, but ok :D ).
I think people just gave up hope basically. Yes you can play the remake, but of course it's another thing to have the original and be able to play it...
It's not an easy task.
You have to define the letters missing from the font to draw the scroll at the beginning and end of the game and translate the texts. That would be the easy part.
Putting everything back together so that it fits, that's another thing...
...or do what I did as a kid: open the disk in Discology and overwrite the Spanish texts in cold blood :D
I thought about it long ago. I mean, translating the texts and manual would be easy (I could do it if somebody dumps the original texts) but, as robcfg points out, fitting everything in the program in a proper way would be quite complicate. BTW, the PDF attached is nice but there is quite a big spelling mistake on it: it is "herejía", not "heregía" :-X

Ha, thanks, there's no point in making an English one as there is no translation yet ;)

That's what I was thinking about. English is more concise than Spanish, it's certainly one way of doing it.
I wanted to contact the MSX guy who did it, but he posted as anonymous and the link to their website is dead.

I'm going to check that right away! I don't know Spanish (obviously) and just copied the original text as best as I could. There probably other mistakes, especially on the accents that were a pain to input on my non-Spanish keyboard :p
[edit] and what do you know, the spelling mistake comes right from the back of the original box! I'll correct it any way.

-Delete the bank of the editor. Store all english text in this bank.
-change de text point table to point these bank.
-intercept the write subrutines first when was called mount the bank in a place the game not used at this moment.
-after subrutine finished reverse bank configuration.
Or best as gryzor tells change it with hex editor.
Identifying and replacing the introduction text was indeed easy. It took me a while to realise that the entire text was mirrored though haha
Peeking at the dsk in Hex, I can see three blocks of text:

The first one is the intro, the second one is part of the intro ???, and the last one I don't know. The ending maybe?
I replaced the first one with the text from
The Abbey of Crime Extensum, it fits with a bunch of space left for more text, but some characters are missing: the apostrophe,
I,
W,
F, and the
w is replaced by a
ñ. I didn't check for more.
I'm not a fan of that translation tbh. There were a couple of spelling mistakes that I corrected and I don't know, it doesn't flow very well. It reads like a translated text.
The last one is definitely the ending of the game :)
Yep, I figured it out after running it into google translate. It shows in the same parchment effect as the intro, so it will be easy to tweak it to fit in.
I changed a couple of stuff, the few things that I could find that appears in plain text: the prayer times, and the game over screen. Though I couldn't figure out how to move the percent number to fit better. To see it just walk to the guy and put the emulator in fast-forward mode.
Now I'm left with that:

EVERYTHING IS IN SPANISH
EVERYTHING IS IN COMPUTERISH
You are traslating from spanish-> english in teory you need know spanish. :D
But i think is more simple your hex editor ascii table is diferent o the abadia ascii table, so the hex editor changue the letter with the equivalent simbol.
For example= is "a" or cross is "e" etc .
So simply copy the code of the caracter.
I DONT I JUST GIVE YOU GUYS SPANISH TEXTS TO TRANSLATE SO THAT I CAN PLAY THE GAME
Seriously, I just started to poke around in the dsk to see what was in, and found a bunch of text and tried to change it for fun.
But I'm not a computer guy, that archive you linked is fucking scary.
Wait, the damn text is the complete script? That's super short for a book adaptation lol

And why is everything backwards in the dsk??
What version do you want traslate?. If you not have it download the pirate copy from cpcpower, i don't know if the original can be compressed in disk or so.
Ok I think I get it. Everything I've done so far was already in that archive and I spent my evening reinventing the wheel. Cool.

Now, it's cool to see how it's done, but I have no idea how to put it back in the game once I have the English script. How do I cut the words and stuff?

What version do you want traslate?. If you not have it download the pirate copy from cpcpower, i don't know if the original can be compressed in disk or so.
So far I've been using the original version.
I looked at the pirate copy, but I couldn't see any plain text at all in it? I don't get how it could help me.
I think this work in this way:
You have the list of words and the list of phrases ok?.
Each word is identified by the number in the left part.
For example "aqui" have the code 0x69 as you can view in the file.
So knowing the numbers you can mount phrases with the numbers 69 xx xx xx etcc.
To change the text you need change the words editing it normally. And made it match, so probably you need change the phrase. I mean change the numbers of phrase.
Really is not dificult, to change a combination of words in phrase search the old number combination, and change it with your creation in numbers
I have explained ok?.
Example:
0x01 -> 0E F9 0F F9 10 11 12 F9 11 13 FE 14 FD 15 16 17 18 19 F9 1A FD 1B 1C F9 1D 1E 1F FF
BIENVENIDO A ESTA ABADIA, HERMANO. OS RUEGO QUE ME SIGAIS. HA SUCEDIDO ALGO TERRIBLE
0e= bien f9=code incomplete word(not add space) [size=78%]0f=venid f9=code incomplete word 10=o[/size]
So if you search with hex editor "oe,f9,of,f9,10" and you change it to 10,f9,of,f9,oe you put "ovenidbien"
If you change the alone word "bien" but no the phrase to abcd the he write. "Ovenidabc"
I guess what I don't get is the pointers. I understand each "word" has an assigned value from 00 to ee, but where is that value in the word table? all the words are concatenated together without a separation, how does it know where the word starts and stops?
[edit] wait I think I got it. 00 to ee is not a position, but a list. First word, second word, etc. And the end of the word is known because its last letter is bigger than 80, and to get the real last letter you remove 80 from it.
phew.
I think is the f9 if he found a f9 he understand not add space, if he found another number, he write space+next word.
In the other hand ff= finish of phrase look at it, all phrases ends with "ff"
lt probably have another code to change of line (intro).
Yes, thank you for your help
Now, I'd like it very much if the translation itself was made with the help of the community, especially the native speakers of Spanish and English. Because the translation of Spanish into English by a French guy is a recipe for disaster. Especially as said dude would use google translate to do all the basic work.
There will be a pointer table somewhere else. 0x69 points to the 0x69th entry in the pointer table, which points to the start of the string.
Otherwise you'd have to search through the entire text counting high bits for every lookup.

Dammit!
The end of the words is signaled by setting the highest bit of the byte.
ASCII codes are 7-bit, so the highest bit is unused. Setting the high bit to mark the end of words saves one byte per word.
You'll have to find the pointer table and set it so that it matches your new word array.
I can help with the translation. I am Spanish but I have been living in UK for more than 6 years :) The original is written in old Spanish (more or less) and of course I would not be able to do the same in English, but still. In any case, I think the game does not need a word by word translation, but properly written English texts with the same meaning. On the other hand, it would be necessary to dump in-game texts as well :)
Well, I can help with editing :)

The texts are taken directly from the book (that is, The Name of the Rose).
That said, I have already the texts in english. Let me dig for them and I'll upload them here.
If they are taken straight from the book, it should be dead easy! :D We still need to translate the in-game texts, though.
True :)

An interesting anonomy I found in BASIC 1.0 & 1.1 is chr(128). If I use the Copy Cursor to copy it to a BASIC string and then use BIN(ASC(MID$(" ",1,1)),8) for example, the binary for chr(32) is returned.
If it displays identically to a space, then it'll copy a space. The copy cursor (and copychr$) don't have some hidden buffer of characters to read out of, it literally searches every character definition in order until it finds one that matches the screen data. Since space is the earliest blank character in the default character set, that's what you'll get.

More easy. The last letter of a word is the number of the last letter +80.
If you want put N as last letter that is "4E" add 80 and put "CE" using windows calculator with hexa selected and byte selected.

intro:
Jamas volvi a verlo.

If everything is a direct quote from the book, then we should get the official English translation. Plus it will be better than anything we can devise, being a professional translation etc.

No I get it. it's just we tend to forget that everything is 0s and 1s when we are editing characters and hex codes.
It would have easier if my Hex editor had an option to display ASCII with either bit the same, or like one in bold or something.
Forget what I said about a pointer table, this doesn't use one. I just tracked it in the debugger and it *absolutely* scans through the entire wordlist from the beginning for every word/subword. Yikes.
Oh well, at least it makes it easier to rebuild the table...

I've started taking bits of the book to redo the intro. The film introduction is shorter, and may or may not be suitable for the game introduction.
Now, shall we take the opportunity to restore the original names of the protagonists? Game is Guillermo de Occam, Book is William of Baskerville.
Ooh interesting question, this one! I think better not, or there will be some confusion...

The table of pointers goes from space (0x20 on the ascii table) to 'z' (0x7A on the ascii table). The pointers set to 0 mean that the letter is not defined.
I'm on a rush right now, I'll finish the texts later today and explain how the scroll characters are encoded.
The new introduction is inserted.
About the missing letters, I'll need a good soul to draw them, if we can insert them back.
characters used in the new english intro
- , : . ' 1 2 3 7 a A b B c d D e f F g h H i I J k l L m M n o O p P r s S t T u v w W y z
From what I glanced of the ending, it should add ; j q x E to the list of used characters.
Characters used in the intro that are missing from the game
' w B F I W
ñ is drawn instead of w
included characters in the game: a-z, ñ/w A C D E G H J L M S T Y
included characters unused in the english intro/ending : C E G Y
These could be re-purposed to become B F I W
Which means we only have the apostrophe to fit somewhere.
I may be able to use one of these?
"este caracter no está en la tabla y es una 'm' un poco distinta de la 'm' que muestra"
"??? caracter irreconocible"
"???"
The important bit: I need glyphs for ' w B F I W.
Here you have the texts of the intro and ending scrolls.
I still need to check that the text formatting of the intro fits the scroll, but the ending one is ok.
I've converted them to binary and reversed them so you can load them straight away.
As for the letters, they are encoded as a series of points that must be drawn in order to give the illusion of being written. Some glyphs like w and W can be done by mirroring m and M, but others have to be done from scratch.
It can be done, but will take some time.
Thanks! I had already done the intro, but I'm glad to see that we have the exact same text ;) I had to make slightly shorter lines, as the space is very large in that font. there have been a line or two where I would have liked to have a space that is a pixel or two thinner so that I could fit a word better. I think it would also allow for better reading.
I'll be incorporating the ending now, thank you.
The in-game dialogues don't seem to be direct quotes from the book (or I failed to locate them), so they will need a proper translation by a Spanish/English team :)
I can take care of those if somebody sends them to me :)
If we are lucky and the in-game dialogs are stored as a table of pointers and an array of indexes into the dictionary, we should be able to extract all sentences, translate them and generate a new dictionary.
The amount of data that is included in the game is staggering!

The in game dialogues were all extracted some time ago, and provided along with a lot of other stuff earlier in the thread.
Ok, this means it's too late so let's call it a day. :picard:
The ending is in!
Of course I can't know if the inclusion is bug-free, but at least it should roll fine.
I will post here the in-game texts when they are translated :) I expect them to be in correct English, but maybe they will benefit from some editing to make them more "old style".
Dialogue W is back in, no more Ñ. Dialogue ' replaces ¿, shows up as @ on a PC.
Trying to understand how the scroll characters are encoded but no luck so far.
Hi,
I'm taking a look at creating the missing glyphs:
[attachimg=1]
Now, for the encoding, each byte contains x and y coordinates of the pixels in range 0 to 14, packed as yyyyxxxx.
For example, a dot at 5,9 will be encoded as 0x95.
The last byte has the y coord 0xF and the x coord is the number of pixels to the next letter. If it is 15 pixels, the last byte would be 0xFF.
I'll go on with the remaining missing glyphs.
Quote from: robcfg on 14:46, 10 October 17Now, for the encoding, each byte contains x and y coordinates of the pixels in range 0 to 14, packed as yyyyxxxx.
lol, I wouln't have figured that out.
I'll have a go at the
w[edit]
Now that's annoying. My
w has four more hex values than the original
ñ, but I can't make space for it. If I move the following stuff, the following letters (x, y, z) are not drawn correctly and the scroll text has added garbage on the start of its first line. The character segment is right after a "Track-Info" thing which I don't suppose I can touch either.
Here is my attempt at a
w, but not in a dsk :(

Ok guys, here are the texts :) I am sure that you will find typos here and there and the style is not the nicest either. This is because I wanted to avoid using apostrophes and special characters in order to skip the creation of new glyphs and make the conversion as easy as possible. Feel free to change whatever needs to be modified, I am not a native English speaker after all. In some cases, I have written a couple of alternatives, with and without special characters :)

Whoa, some work there...
Wouldn't it be better to have it somewhere where people could edit it, like a Google Doc or something?
Yes... but I am at work now and I cannot do it at the moment :-X Feel free to upload everything somewhere :D
Damn, that's great! I've put the apostrophe back in, so it can be used.
punctuation signs allowed:
colon :
semicolon ;
comma ,
period .
question mark ?
apostrophe '
Excelent work with the translation!
I've spotted a few typos and I've checked the names in the book, which are as follows:
Adelmo, Berengar, Jorge, Malachi, Severinus and Venantius.
I changed my W a little bit, and I also have it on the format expected by the game.
Going on with the rest of the glyphs!
Great! I did not read the book, so I did not know the real names  . I used either the Spanish ones or a plain English translation, but not the latin originals, something that actually makes much more sense :) Now that we can use the apostrophe, there are a few sentences that may be re-written using it and they will sound a bit more natural, but less formal too.
Quote from: robcfg on 14:37, 11 October 17Going on with the rest of the glyphs!
@robcfg (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4) I made this thing yesterday, it may be of use
you input the hex in the "read" tab to draw a glyph
you put your coordinates in the "draw" tab to make the hex values.
(I don't even know if it will work properly on a non-French computer, libreoffice translates all the function names)
Small update, I forgot to translate the vespers and compline.
apostrophe and w in the rolling test! might be buggy
It was indeed bugged. glyphs has been corrected, text is restored.
I'm getting better at moving stuff around and modifying pointers. Counting in hex is a pain, especially as the dsk is upside down and therefore none of the addresses in the source code are accurate, or can have maths done to it. I removed a supposedly unused character (described as such in the source) to make some space for the apostrophe, the extra pixels in the w and in the future capitals, but I just found where the pointer for the introduction text was, so I may revert that and move the text instead. Depending how big the new capitals are and how lazy I am to move about 50 pointers.
the game use only 64kb.
Yes and no.
The disk version uses 128Kb and the tape version, 64Kb at the cost of two rooms which are included in the 128Kb version.
It's more convenient to use the 128Kb version, as it has room for adding new data without having to relocate all existing data to accommodate the new one.

I don't know what you're trying to say.
Remember I'm not a programmer, it's the first time I'm doing something like that. I'm like changing bytes that looked like letters and watching the game changing as a result.
So far I'm lucky enough that stuff seems to work, though I'm dreading the time I'll have to implement the in-game dialogues and the so-called dictionary.

Damn lol, that's exactly what I'm doing :(
Wouldn't it break stuff if I start adding data in random empty spaces? Or at least increase the loading times? I'm trying to keep everything together, even if it means moving a bunch of data a few bytes down and modifying all the corresponding pointers.

I've put my own take below yours. I've changed a few things:
- the names were corrected to match the book
- the typos I saw
- my take on a few sentences
- I contracted I AM to I'M, IT IS to IT'S, but not I HAVE, I WILL... I'm not sure how much I can contract, the rules and formality of it all.
- I moved the apostrophes to the end of the sentences, as per the original Spanish. The shorter sentences are supposed to appear frequently, so the useful information scrolls first.
- I changed a few MUST to HAVE TO. But not all of them. Some of the context is unclear to me.
Things I'd like to change, but I want you guys' opinions:
- I'm tempted to correct WARN to ALERT. It depends on the context of the scene.
- "The library is a secret place". I'm not sure "secret" is right here. I'm leaning more towards "private", "personal", "confidential". Context is needed. ok
- "Dios Santos" "Good God" Holy God"... What would be a good, holy interjection?
- There are a few phrases I'm not a fan of, but I can't think of anything better.
I've counted words and characters, and everything should fit nicely within the original code with space to spare.
[EDIT] The line about the Coena Cypriani is bothering me. The characters are talking about two subversive books in Eco's: the Coena Cypriani which has no known author but is widely available, and Poetics, Book II by Aristotle, a lost writing. The authors of the game have conflated both to have the hidden Coena Cypriani by Aristotle. I don't know if it's a mistake or on purpose, but I feel the simplification was unneeded. I restored the line to have the proper book incriminated, but I'll be happy to hear arguments of the other side.
Earlier this year, I had a look at trying to work out how to create an English version of
La Abadía del Crimen, but I didn't get very far. Redefining the character set is going to take a lot of work because, as @robcfg (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4) has explained, each pixel is encoded individually.
I have attached a ZIP file containing a 'frozen' snapshot of the 128K version of the game (it's in an infinite loop at address &0400; you need to modify the code at &0400 or the program counter to begin the game) and source code for generating the character data and the text.
@khaz (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1619) - this should make your life a lot easier! :)
To use the source code file:
- Open the snapshot file in WinAPE.
- Open the WinAPE assembler (press F3).
- Open my source code file.
- Run it (select 'Assembler' from the menu, then select 'Run', or alternatively, press F9)).
There is data for one character that is not used (look for a label called
char64_data). I have assigned it to character 64 (@). Removing the lines for this character will save some space for additional characters.
Here are some details of how the text is stored in memory (all addresses are in the main 64K, i.e. bank &C0):
- &680C-&68C1: Table of pointers to character data
- &6947-&72E0: Character data; don't go beyond &72FF!
- &7300-&787A: Introduction text; don't go beyond &7899!
You can use WinAPE's debugger (select 'Debug' from the menu, then select 'Pause', or alternatively, just press F7) to see how the memory is being used.
It looks like there is an area of memory from &7E8A-&7FFF that is free and could be used to store additional data if necessary.

It is all very good :) I mean, my translation was intended to let you know, guys, the meaning of these sentences in an unambiguous way. I am sure that the style can be vastly improved :)
Regarding some particular comments:
- I still prefer "warn" rather than "alert". It is way more used, at least where I live in UK, and I think that it fits better with the original meaning of the sentence.
- Holy interjection: I chose "Good God" because I think it is a bit more out of fashion than "Holy". However, there is nothing wrong with the later one.
- "Must" and "have to": I would say that in the context of the original game, must is a better translation but more opinions would be greatly appreciated.
- About the Coena Cypriani issue I don´t really know what to say. Basically I translated what was in there :)

I've done some more work and included the data for the scrolling messages and the dictionary in the source code. A new version of the ZIP file has been attached to my previous post (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/games/la-abadia-del-crimen-in-english/msg150281/#msg150281).
Here are some details of how the in-game scrolling messages are stored in memory:
- &B400-&B56F: Font
- &B580-&BA68: Dictionary (239 'words' in total); don't go beyond &BAFF!
- &BB00-&BE9C: Encoded data for scrolling messages
A useful tip for being able to view any scrolling message is to set a breakpoint at address &504A in the main 64K of memory (bank &C0) (in WinAPE, click on the grey bar just to the left of the relevant line and a red circle will appear), and when the breakpoint is activated, change the value of the B register to the message number you wish to view (there are 56 in total, numbered from 0-55).

I'm warming up to it. I had that initial impression that it felt like too much like a child telling on someone, especially the line "DROP VENANTIUS´ MANUSCRIPT OR I WILL WARN THE ABBOT", but it's also one of the few phrase which I can't discern the context for. It helps that WARN is also used in other places, and keeping the dictionary small is something that should be in the back of my mind.

- "Must" and "have to": I would say that in the context of the original game, must is a better translation but more opinions would be greatly appreciated.
I've changed it where context told me that it was the expression of an obligation, not the feeling of the speaker. I have left the other MUST intact for the same reason. Maybe this distinction isn't possible in Spanish? The only part where I'm not sure about its use is SOMEONE WANTS TO DECIDE WHAT THE MONKS MUST AND MUST NOT KNOW. But the overall phrase may have to be tweaked.

Haha, yes, it's the same idea as whether to replace OCCAM by BASKERVILLE. The game authors used the plot and characters of Eco, save for the last name of the main character (which isn't mentioned anywhere but once in the introduction), and the name of the MacGuffin (but kept its author's name).
Quote from: Nich on 17:22, 15 October 17Here are some details of how the in-game scrolling messages are stored in memory
Perhaps you may be able to explain something to me.
I was considering adding back the final punctuation to the ingame phrases, and also give an exclamation mark to a few of them. But the way the punctuation is coded is unclear to me:
; The following bytes are also used:
;
; 249 (&F9) - do not add a space before the beginning of the following word
; 250 (&FA) - inverted question mark
; 251 (&FB) - question mark (?)
; 252 (&FC) - semicolon (;)
; 253 (&FD) - full stop (.)
; 254 (&FE) - comma (,)
Yet the glyphs are coded as
00 00 00 30 30 00 30 30 ; 0x3a -> :
00 00 00 18 18 00 18 30 ; 0x3b -> ;
00 00 00 00 00 00 18 30 ; 0x3c -> ,
00 00 00 00 00 00 1C 1C ; 0x3d -> .
00 7C C6 46 1C 30 00 30 ; 0x3f -> ?
0C 00 0C 38 62 63 3E 00 ; 0x40 -> ¿
Why don't the numbers match?
Quote from: khaz on 18:09, 15 October 17

The punctuation marks aren't stored in the dictionary, so you can't use values 0x3A-0x40 to encode them.

I've replaced the ¿ glyph with the apostrophe already, so no more substitution.

There are four characters which have been defined in order to try to squeeze more than one letters into an 8x8 block. These are used for the text in the bottom left window which shows the canonical hour (thank you, Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liturgy_of_the_Hours#Canonical_hours)! :D).
I reckon we should only need to use one of these characters in the English translation, so you could redefine character 47 (/) as an exclamation mark.
The font data for character 47 is stored at &B410, so you can add the following lines to the source code:
org &b410
db &00,&10,&38,&38,&10,&10,&00,&10 ;redefine / to an exclamation mark (!)
However, you will need to use the exclamation mark in the words in the dictionary, instead of using a separate byte to represent it (i.e. you can't use a byte such as 0xF8).
Actually I used two to write PLI of COMPLINE
Quote from: Nich on 19:43, 15 October 17However, you will need to use the exclamation mark in the words in the dictionary, instead of using a separate byte to represent it (i.e. you can't use a byte such as 0xF8).
Yeah, that's what I thought. I'll see what I can do, I'm not sure it's worth it.

in-game dictionary and phrases

game over (may be bugged depending on the percentage achieved)

I didn't go further than the second day, so if you're familiar with the game please test it so that we can know things work fine.
So we're nearly there! the only few things missing are graphics-related and I can't do them, sadly.
One thing I don't know how to hack:

That's easy. Just change the byte at &5E98 from &3C to &2B (the number for the Y key on a QWERTY keyboard). :)
Thanks both of you. I modified it, and knowing what to look for I also modified the key code to save on disc.
And I can confirm I haven't broken the save system!
The prerecorded demo (shift F8/F9) is quite interesting haha.
I don't think I can do anything more now. hmm...
Good news!
I asked Manuel Pazos if we could borrow the glyphs from the Abadía del Crimen Extensum remake and kindly sent them to me.
So here they are!
Great news indeed!
Let's see how everything fits now...
The glyphs are in, the scroll is now complete!
Things that are in:
intro text
ending text
missing parchment glyphs
in-game dictionary and phrases
in-game complete font
prayers
game over (may be bugged depending on the percentage achieved)
Y/N properly mapped
Things missing:
"Dia" in the main interface isn't translated
the loading screen
The game should now be entirely playable in English! Unless there are bugs.
Now if anyone is able to change the title in the loading screen, and the "Dia" in the user interface, that would be awesome. And also how to put them back in the code, because I have no idea where the data is lol
[edit] I don't know why I thought I didn't need the E. I do. I don't have enough space to put it amongst the other glyphs before the text, so I put it after. It's terribly dirty, but it seem to work so it'll stay there.
[edit] some news have been linking to that post. KEEP READING THE THREAD! more up to date versions are posted, and as of today there are still modifications I need to put in, even on the text. I welcome the beta testers, but you need to be aware of the fact.
REALLY? IT'S DONE?
Oh my...
I can't consider it done until I have the loading screen and interface, honestly. But it's fully playable for sure!
I've tested it to the best of my abilities while inserting the text, so there shouldn't be any dictionary inversion or spelling mistake. I can't be sure that all the phrases are played at the correct moment. They should, but only a full playthrough can guarantee it.
One thing I couldn't test is the accuracy of the translation in regards to context. For example I had to change a verb from present to past tense early in the game to account for the fact that the subject wasn't there any more. I very much need feedback on that.
The ending scrolling text has been tested by inserting it in the intro scroll. Again, it should work correctly but I've never reached the actual ending.

@khaz (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1619) did the majority of the work, but the contributions of other members should not be overlooked:
- @||C|-|E|| (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1447), for providing initial English translations of the messages
- Me, for providing Z80 assembler code for @khaz (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1619) to use, without which this project would have been a lot more difficult
- @robcfg (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4) and Manuel Pazos, for providing some font characters used in the introductory text
Yeah it's a collective effort. My credit is to nag people for help haha
BUT IT'S NOT OVER YET! graphics, testing, etc
It's amazing. I started this thread on Feb 2011 but the people in this community are so great one must never lose hope :)

I don't know if you've seen them already, but there are two playthroughs of the game available on YouTube:
@Metr (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=359):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDBDAVxwIxo
@Retrodanuart (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2094):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpCv8OngE1g
Both videos are about 1 hour and 50 minutes long! If you can find the time to watch them, it should help you understand the context in which the scrolling messages are displayed.
QuoteThe ending scrolling text has been tested by inserting it in the intro scroll. Again, it should work correctly but I've never reached the actual ending.
You can watch the ending in WinAPE by using the debugger (press F7) and setting the program counter (PC) to 3868.
EDIT: Thanks to @Retrodanuart (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=2094) for pointing out that I mixed up the YouTube videos above. I have fixed this now.

Indeed. We have managed to provide an (almost) complete translation of the game within 3 weeks! :o
@Nich (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=53), the tagged names for the videos on your post are swapped, the first one is Retrodanuart, the second one is from Metro81 :)

Now if anyone is able to change the title in the loading screen, and the "Dia" in the user interface, that would be awesome. And also how to put them back in the code, because I have no idea where the data is lol
The graphics for the user interface are stored at &6328 in bank &C7. I'm afraid I don't really have the artistic talent to try to change 'Dia' to 'Day', though. :(
As for the loading screen - should we change the title to The Abbey of Crime? I think its original name is so well known in the CPC community that there isn't really any benefit in changing it.
Maybe an English title with the original below it?

Thanks, that showed me that although I planned better paragraph / page delimitations, I forgot to actually put it in the final text. This will go in the next revision.
And there's a stray ellipsis too. I must have been tired that day.
And the E doesn't show up either. That one is strange, it showed up in the intro tests. I guess I'll really have to move more pointers to put it with the other glyphs.
[edit]ok, the E shows up if I do the F7 thing during the intro scroll, but not if I do it during gameplay. What does it mean for a normal playthrough?
Right. I moved the E back with its kind, moved the whole intro and its pointer, took care of that stray ellipsis, added that one newline at the beginning of the text like I always intended, and also removed a couple of end-of-page hyphens that were annoying to the reader.
When I say I need beta-testers, I'm not lying lol
The Abbey of Crime is a bit clumsy in English. Probably best to keep it as it is.
Crime Abbey is a bit 'modern'. CRIME ABBEY 2049.
"The Abbey" is nice and vague, like a danish television drama.
The Dia -> Day thing probably needs the 'D' moving left a bit to free up a few pixels (as y is wider than i), moving the 'a' next to it, and only requires a new 'y'.
I've been given a few suggestions regarding the wording of the dialogues and the scroll. I'm in the process of integrating them, but If you have more, keep them coming!
I'll post a better version soon. And still hopeful for volunteers to help with the graphics.
I was given the following info on twitter; see the whole discussion :)

PS I don't know about you guys, but I love the new embedding system...
all right all right!
I'll try to upload an updated version tonight.
(I want graphics 😭 )
:D :D :D
Which graphics are needed?
I'd like to give them a try during the weekend.

NOTE TO THE NEWS REPORTERS LURKING AROUND: THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS.
I would appreciate very much if you wrote it as such. If you only want to report the finished work, especially has I plan several more test releases over the next week, I will make a new thread in /Games with the final dsk and a nice paragraph explaining the changes. So watch that space.
-----
I've reworded some dialogues based on suggestions I received. Not all of them have been implemented as I'm limited in the number of words I can use.
You can find all the lines of dialogues in this google document:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VS1Q5TymS36JLf42WNkapHJs57T81C4IciwGeM9SryM/edit?usp=sharing
WARNING It's super spoilery. If you'd rather discover them in-game, please do so (And I'd love a feedback on that).
If you have suggestions, you can add them on the document, or post them here, or message me. If you edit the document, message me so I can review them and discuss them with you.
I've corrected a few typos in the scrolls. I'm not super satisfied on the words placements, and in my opinion the space between words is a couple pixels too wide. I would like to experiment with the space width, but I can't find where it's defined in the code. If someone has an idea?
In the mean time, enjoy this.

I wonder if we could fit a CPCWiki logo in there somewhere, like we did with the awesome Zynaps CPCWiki version (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/games/zynaps-title-music-on-emulators/msg32849/#msg32849)?

The byte at &6754 in bank &C0 controls the space width (it's &0A by default). I think setting it to &08 works well.

Thanks! yep, I couldn't have found it myself. 08 is a good value indeed, that or maybe 07. I'm checking what it means for the word wrap and hyphenation of both texts, but it's already much more pleasant to read.
I'm considering changing some glyphs slightly, specifically the last pixel that indicates their width. Some letters are close together, while others have a one pixel space before the next one. And it seems random. Will experiment.
I also changed NONE to NONES because I don't know why I thought it was written without an S. It's spelled with one everywhere in the book.
both these change (and probably more) will be in the next update.

Most references to canonical hours that I have found on the web spell it 'none', but I didn't know at the time that
The Name of the Rose used 'nones'.

Well, I'm certainly not an amazing pixel artist, but I came up with this modified title screen (which took me several hours to perfect!):
[attachimg=1]
What does everyone think? Personally, I'm pretty satisfied with it. I've tried to keep the positioning of the various parts of the title faithful to the original screen.
My only complaint is that the tail on the letter 'y' doesn't look quite right. I've based it on the descenders of the letters 'c' and 'e'.
And here's my attempt at modifying the status bar:
[attachimg=1]
I've managed to squeeze the width of the letters 'D' and 'a' while mostly retaining their original shape. I'm pretty pleased with this effort as well. :)
@Nich (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=53) ,
You did a fine work with the pictures!

I took that logo from the overscan title screen of the CPCWiki enhanced version of
Zynaps. ;)
Great choice nonetheless 8)
Ooh I like that :D
Looks great. Who is the owner of opera soft rights nowadays ?
I had a go at the y myself. I used the bottom of the a for it.
Great job at the T, it works well.
I noticed a discrepancy in the letters height between the top and bottom rows. The top row has one fewer pixel than the bottom row, and copying the e directly means it stands slightly taller. I tried to correct it in different ways:
[attachimg=1]
Both rows have kept their original size. I tweaked the e but as a result, it looks a bit different on each row.
[attachimg=2]
I shortened the bottom row.
[attachimg=3]
I expanded the top row.
I have my opinion on which looks best, but I'd love to hear yours, guys.
[edit] removed some inconsistencies.
Another update. The in-game text has been greatly modified to take into account its context, and a few words were changed for better English. Thanks to you guys for all the help!
The text is probably good now.
The space character in the scrolls is thinner, but I haven't looked at the scrolls otherwise. It will be the next update.

I prefer the one named
abadia_new_title_screen_both.png (the first of the three screens in your post).
Image 2 (1 pixel stubbier version).
I'm having trouble as to understand where and how the loading screen and graphical interface elements are stored. I have been probing the source code and the dsk, but without any luck yet. Still searching.
In the mean time, put this on a real disc, run"disc and mash 0, 1, 2, or 3 to swap between the different versions.
Seeing the pics on a real blurry CPC display is quite different than a small thumbnail in your browser.
(like, really mash them. My routine is completely unoptimized and may not catch all your keypresses.)

On the DSK file, the title screen is stored in 5 separate blocks located at the following hex addresses:
1500-23FF
2500-33FF
3500-43FF
4500-53FF
5500-58FF
As I'm sure you know, the data is stored in reverse on the disc.
The status bar is stored in 2 separate blocks, again in reverse:
B2D8-B3FF
B500-BBD7
However, we need to find a way of converting both PNG files to CPC format, which I can see is already being discussed (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/software-related/converting-an-image-to-show-on-the-cpc-with-the-correct-palette/?topicseen).
The status bar isn't stored as a screen but as a large sprite. You could save the PNG file as a 320×200 screen, convert it to a CPC screen with ConvImgCPC, then use a sprite grabbing program on a CPC emulator to grab the status bar and save it as a sprite.
I'm going to look into it.
How do you find all that?
[edit] Right, I get how the sprite is encoded. Each byte codes for 4 pixels, with the first digit coding orange, and the second coding yellow. If bits are overlapping it becomes black, if none are it stays green (background). There is probably a super clever computer-way to generate the hex codes of a sprite, but I think I'll just brute-force my way through it. Most of the changes being orange and black makes it half easier (codes being Fx, where x is the binary pattern of black pixels.)
Probably not tonight though ^^
(although convimgcpc could, we'll see.)
Once you know where things are...
I feel like I spent most of my time looking for things, before giving up and asking here. Comparing and replacing the things can be tedious, but not really difficult.
The loading screen is in, people.
Quote from: khaz on 23:05, 03 November 17
How do you find all that?
I already knew where the status bar was located in the CPC's memory, and how much memory it uses, so I looked at the final few bytes of the status bar sprite, reversed them, then searched for the reversed bytes in the DSK file to find out where the data for the status bar is stored on the disc.
I have written a BASIC program to convert the status bar and title screen to a format that can be inserted into the DSK file. It reverses the bytes and then saves 2 files for the status bar (
STATBARx.BIN) and 5 files for the title screen (
TITLESCx.BIN). You can extract these files using the
ManageDsk (http://cpcwiki.eu/index.php/ManageDsk) utility, and then use a hex editor to insert them into the DSK file at the appropriate addresses. It's slow, but it works. :)
I have attached a ZIP file containing a DSK file with the BASIC program on it, and PAL files for the status bar and title screen.
If you prefer to use a different title screen, you can use
ManageDsk to add it to the DSK file. However, if you are using
ConvImgCpc to convert the screen, make sure the 'Lock' box below each palette colour is ticked so that the order of the palette is preserved, otherwise it will not be converted correctly!
Thanks.
What I did was extracting the loading screen data and injecting it into a previous .scr. Then it was just a matter of reorganising the palette in convimgcpc. With that palette, I can simply use convimgcpc to generate the scr I want, and insert that data back in the dsk.
Hello all, :)
I followed all the exchanges concerning the possibilities of translation, I said to myself why not try the translation in French.
So I used all your data, by the way, a big Bravo to all those who worked on it.

So I reworked the introduction image and the banner image.
I also translated the introduction text, to create the letters with accents: é, è, ê, à, â, I used the pointers of some special characters such as :
