I hope I am not asking a total n00b question here, but what are the [a1] or [a3] etc versions of downloads?  I see this all over the internet for all the various computers and it has bugged me for years!

It's like a variant.
[a1] [a2]:
Same game and probably same disk offset but small differencies in image structure.

So, if [a1] doesn't work, probably [a2] works.

Well I only uploaded files from my archive.
  I am creating a game database for several systems here. (Amiga, CPC, ....)

Well, I don't know about CPC, but for Amiga it was very common to have a version that worked on A500, and another one for A600, and a third one for A1200. An A500 version often just didn't run on an A600.

This notation come certainly from the GoodTools that plan to recognize every good rom available (of course it's impossible to acheive but it's his goal). So you can't arbitrary choose a version and forget the others unless you want people to let your tool down. You have to recognize every version so that explains the [a?] tag...

Well thanks for the good answers and that begs another question; how do the different computer model owners out there know which variant to choose, or is it a case of try every version to see what works for you?  I expect this to be the answer seeing as in the Atari ST world, there are so many permutations on which version does what and on which machine and hard drive etc.

it's a trial and error thing. It'd be nice to have a format that would tell you more info - heck, even an agreed format on .diz or .nfo files detailing which STOS version to use would be nice!
