Yeah, he chose to overlap the sprites of the hero/monsters on the ladders, which is the easiest way to go, but a bit ugly. He could have merged the black part of the hero or monster with the sprite of the ladder using an OR instruction, or displayed a dedicated sprite when a collision is detected. I had a quick look at the code, and it's clearly not optimized. Still, it's his best game so far IMO !
