The flickering landscape as you speed up is really bad for the eyes

Yeah, I can see why they've done that to try and give an impression of speed without having to redraw the whole screen but it doesn't really work.

You could pull off a better effect if you used more PENs to draw the stripes at the side of the road. Draw twice as many lines, in colour sequence, then set the first two colours to dark green and the other two to light green (so that it looks as it does now). Then cycle the INK changes through all four PENs at varying speed as you accelerate. Then you'd get slightly more of a sense of motion out of it.
