The varied models from the Atari 8bit family were quite strange...

Not really, the only differences between models are the amount of RAM, joystick ports and if they have a CTIA or the more powerful GTIA (which almost all A8 machines have apart from the earliest). There's more variety in the CPC/CPC Plus range than the Atari 8-bits to be honest...

Quote from: MacDeath on 20:18, 10 November 11Pokey is said by its fans (not coolers) to be even better than SID, but I also heard it is a bit out of tune, yet it also has 4 channels which is quite good.

In it's default setting there are four channels, yes, but they're using 8-bit frequencies and there's a lot of what i believe is called cross modulation between the channels. Two channels can pair up to produce one with a 16-bit frequency so musicians can select from four 8-bit, two 16-bit or one 16-bit and two 8-bit as they see fit.

As to it being better than the SID... well, it's a matter of personal opinion of course, but most of the Atarians i know prefer the SID for music and the POKEY for sound effects. Certainly SID's having three 16-bit channels, more waveforms on tap (the POKEY's range can be extended with timing-critical code), hardware-driven ADSR and a wider range of filters gives it an advantage.

Quote from: MacDeath on 20:18, 10 November 11Buto n the video I think it is completely messy.

There are a few more resolutions than other 8-bits; 320x192 with two luminances of one colour, 160x192 or 160x96 with four or five colours depending on mode and GTIA-equipped machines have 80x192 or 80x96 with sixteen luminances of one colour, sixteen colours at one luminance or nine unique colours.

The video display is built from the display list, so programmers can specify how many (character or bitmap) lines they want for any given part of the screen; interrupts can be triggered from the display list as well to alter registers at specific points of the image.

Quote from: MacDeath on 20:18, 10 November 11But to be clear, they only "discovered recently" how to display more than a 160x200x4 mode on screen... sort of.

Even as far back as the 1980s there were demos and occasionally games using hardware sprites to add colour to bitmaps (the 320x192 modes can be "tinted" to give about ten colours using all the sprites), software-driven modes like APAC (80x96 with 256 colours that relies on PAL blending) have been around for ages and the idea of splitting the colour registers during the display was one of the first techniques used to add colour - the hardware is very good at that kind of work because they've even supplied a way to halt the processor until the next scanline starts and those "rainbow" displays are part of the distinctive Atari 8-bit "feel".

Actually I'm playing Another World these days (without having read the forum) :)

A really great game, very innovative and addictive - despite it being irritatingly hard at many parts. Sound is not bad by any stretch, it's just sparse - on purpose. A real classic, and one I had bought both for my ST and for its 15th anniversary (enhanced a bit).

Apart from the intro I even loved more the ending
Do not forget to try the High resolution version

Ok, thanks for linking to this, it made me realise there's NO WAY I can finish it. Though I think I had finished it on the ST.

However... what the fark happens after the end? Does he go back to his world? Does he stay in the other universe? What? WHAT?!

Badstarr

The ending is supposed to be ambiguous as said in some interviews with the author on Youtube (will post some links when I have some time I'm rather tired after soldering a load of wires to a GX4000 ASIC damn it's hard work lol! ) apparently this is why there is no sequel.

Gryzor

...which is a shame. About the sequel, I mean, but I can't see how an ambiguous ending could prevent that. If nothing else, it provides lots of room for a continuing adventure. I was just disappointed because the game should be about returning home, not merely getting out of prison...

Gryzor

I think those vids are part of the 15th Anniversary edition?

MacDeath

He did some Amstrad Stuff ? :)

nice video, i will watch it later.

But why subtitles ? I can easily understand it without. ;D

That's awesome to see that the guy almost inveted the modern way of doing 2D games... all vectorised instead of Bitmaped... and it worked great....

His editor must be nice.

The same guy younger and frenchier...

another one, where he states that the intro on Amiga is something like 64K...  :o

Quoteanother one, where he states that the intro on Amiga is something like 64K...  :o

Well, really the entire game fits in 64k.

:D

In atari 800  :P.

MacDeath

not sure they used vectors or polygons...

Badstarr

Hmmm... Fits into 64k? That's encouraging, that would bode well for a Plus port! At least the intro could fit into RAM  ;D  I suppose the occasional disk access wouldn't be too jarring during the game if necessary.

MacDeath

Well, provided the Amstrad could perform those polygons/vector based graphics...
