Burnin' Rubber Highest Qualifying Position?

I've been playing this game since 1990   I think the highest I've ever managed to qualify is 4th which involves slipstreaming other cars to get higher speed   Has anyone done any better?  Is it even possible to qualify 1st?
Also anyone have a copy of the ROM where accelerate/brake is already mapped to to button 1/2.  I prefer using the buttons instead.

Is it really possible to slipstream?

Because you need use the rebuff in the cars to make speed to the 1st.

Looks like I'm going to have to keep practicing and improving the amount of slipstreaming, he moves at the last second.  I think you need to get lucky on the placement of the other cars.

I think he may be taking advantage of some less-than-perfect collision detection...
