Title: The Greatest Games You've Never Played
Post by: Darran Lee Jones on 18:58, 15 December 15
We're looking to run a feature on the Amstrad's best hidden gems and are looking for suitable suggestions. I have a few ideas myself, but certainly haven't played everything.
It makes more sense to post here as opposed to our own forum as you're clearly going to be more knowledgeable on the subject and it will keep away the tattling of which system is best.
Simply tell us the ten games you feel define the system and we can go from there.
Ideally exclusives and amstrad-coded stuff will be best. Not interested in things like Operation Wolf, Chase H.Q. etc as we all know they're the best.

Greatest CPC Games could be Orion Prime, Black Land (see CPC-Power), and the one that was never played can be found in the following link...  ;D :P :)

I really don't think this feature is going to us any favours. Going on how Retro Gamers relationship with the Amstad is, I feel it is a bit of a barbed question.
Anyway Here are some,
Dr.Destructo
Triaxo's( Subtle brilliance , but not going to set the world on fire with it's awesomeness)
Fly Spy(Again nothing to blow you away but a very enjoyable game)
3D Starstrike 2
Get Dexter
Sub Hunter
Dead on Time ( Again not mind blowing , but it's scoring systems make it fantastic. Great shooter In the same sense  as Robotron)
Orion Prime
Potsworth and Co
Castle Master (Or Any of the Freescape offerings, Wasn't this an Amstrad development beginning with Driller?Superb)
Freescape Note... Here is an example of what Amstrad has always suffered with , being the last in line usually so our games are always sluggish . If you see the C64 versions of the freescape games they run at a snails pace compared to the Amstrad .
Hardcore Gaming 101: Freescape Engine Games (http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/freescape/freescape2.htm)
The Vindicator( 3 brilliant games within this  ,  most people will have only seen the first level ,which is very difficult  to complete )
Prince of Persia
Alien Storm
Bloodwych
BombJack
Live and Let Die
Wec Lemans
P47 Thunderbolt
Prohibition
Solomons Key
Spherical
Tempest
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles
Turrican 1+2
The Adams Family

Alien Breed on CPC? Do you have a .dsk? I can't find a copy anywhere!
ALSO.. are we talking Team17's Alien Breed here or did you actually mean USGold's Alien Storm?

Dr.Destructo
...

The Island of Dr. Destructo is probably one of the most underrated and greatest games of CPC library. A hidden gem. Cheers.

But how come it ever gets listed alongside Prohibition? [emoji50]

Sure, not bad. But not half as good as the Destructo, get dexter,  prince of persia or others on the list either :)

You've just wasted most of my evening asking this question. ;) I'm only allowed ten games?! No way!

After browsing the list of every game that's been reviewed on CPC Game Reviews (http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/gameslist.html), I came up with two lists - one for British games, and another for foreign (i.e. French and Spanish) games:

British games
Foreign games
I think all of these games are pretty obscure, at least to most casual CPC users.

After browsing the list of every game that's been reviewed on CPC Game Reviews (http://www.cpcgamereviews.com/gameslist.html), I came up with two lists - one for British games, and another for foreign (i.e. French and Spanish) games:

British games

  • Academy - less well known than its predecessor Tau Ceti, but more fun (in my opinion), particularly the ability to build your own spaceships
  • Ball Bearing - homebrew arcade game released in 1993; control a bouncing ball and collect rings
  • Chevy Chase - car racing game
  • Exterminator - great conversion of a coin-op game in which you explore a house killing giant insects
  • Flyspy - very impressive-looking budget game, and it's a CPC exclusive!
  • Fruity Frank - a very little known game when it was originally released
  • Red LED - explore a wide variety of isometric landscapes collecting energy pods
  • Spherical - brilliant Solomon's Key clone with amazing graphics; this may have been released by Rainbow Arts (a German software house) but the programmers were British, so in my opinion, it counts as a British game! :)
  • Split Personalities - variation on the classic tile-sliding puzzle game where you must recreate famous faces, with plenty of hazards thrown in!
  • War Machine - very colourful platformer/shoot-'em-up with plenty of explosions
Foreign games

  • La Abadía del Crimen - widely considered the best Spanish 8-bit game of all time
  • Bumpy - cute French platform/puzzle game in which you control a bouncing ball; later re-released by Infogrames as Pop-Up
  • El Capitán Trueno - Spanish game with beautiful graphics and animation, and it's not that difficult either, unlike most Spanish games!
  • Comando Tracer - ditto; re-released by Alternative Software in the UK as The Last Commando, but it's still relatively little known
  • Iron Lord - the CPC version was only released in France, and it's a real shame that British CPC users couldn't experience it, despite announcements in some magazines that the CPC version would be released in the UK
  • Le Manoir de Mortevielle (aka Mortville Manor) - sublime French detective adventure game with beautiful graphics, digitised speech and an enthralling storyline, but like Iron Lord, the CPC version wasn't released in the UK
  • Pick 'n Pile - another cute puzzle game with colourful graphics where you must match balls of the same colour
  • Psyborg - French tunnel racing game; very fast but perhaps too easy
  • Relief Action - French adventure with 3D wireframe graphics involving exploring a deserted spaceship; very little known (even in France?) and has sold for pretty high prices on the very rare occasions it appears on eBay
  • Xyphoes Fantasy - developed by a team of demo coders and features beautiful graphics and music; perhaps an example of too much style over substance?
I think all of these games are pretty obscure, at least to most casual CPC users.

Some sound choices in there , however I think we'd be eaten alive if Red LED was considered. Our version is horrendous compared to the C64 version.

Dr Destructo is a cracking game and for a budget title it was one of my most pleasing purchases as a kid . Loved the smooth colourful style of it,that and the two player Co-op made it fantastic in my eyes. I only realised years later that it was actually a clone of the Arcade game 'Twin Tigers'(or Two Tigers, something like that).
Regarding Prohibition , I just gave it another go to refresh my opinion on it. I have to say that I still rate it highly. For the game style it is trying to be it does it really well it has sharp graphics, decent tune and well presented. I suppose it could do with a few tweaks in the playability to help it stay interesting. For all I know it may well do , I can only manage getting to level 2 . It did make me think of another game to add to the list  which is 'Operation Jupiter' or 'Hostages'. That game was quite an achievement for on an 8-Bit. Had a 16 bit vibe to it , the level of depth.

Lazer Squad

Cheers man! I remember Amstrad Action covered and praised both Purple Saturn Day and Laser Squad back in the old days.
Both of them, excellent games indeed.
On the other hand, I'm never seeing people remembering or giving credits to them nowadays :)

- Ironlord
- B.A.T
- Bumpy´s Arcade Fantasy
- Guild of Thieves
- Ranarama
- Nebulus
- North and South
- Switchblade
- Stryker in the crypts of Trogan

Of course, there are many others and I am not talking about new releases, but games I missed when the Amstrad was still sold :)

Well, I like the CPC version - but I decided to try out the C64 version after reading your comment, and I see your point. The game is much faster on the C64 - and more difficult as well!

I love The Island of Dr. Destructo - but I think it's too well known to be included in the Retro Gamer article. Remember, guys, they're looking for games that few CPC users will have played...

As for Prohibition, I have largely the same opinion as Puresox. It makes good use of hardware scrolling, looks good and plays well, but the gameplay is too repetitive in the long term - and although it's well known in France, I believe it wasn't all that well known in the UK, so I think it should be considered for inclusion in the article.

IMHO it wouldn't work. Back the day a new game was full of excitement and wonder. Today we are flooded by 3D super-realistic PC games f.e. that this sense of wonder got killed during time. Duet is just one example, back the day I've been fascinated by it, today it's just another speccy port.

See, that's the point I'm driving at. It was one of my first game, there was nothing I could compare it to. Nowadays we all (if we want or not) have seen so many games that something made on an 8 bit computer has it really hard to make an impact.

1: Starion - it has amazing vector graphics and the speed is incredible as it's very smooth.
2: Sub Hunter - parallax smooth horizontal scrolling and great gameplay.
3: Martechs Nigel Mansell Grand Prix - The pseudo 3d road is the fastest and smoothest I have ever seen on a cpc.
4: Mission Genocide - Budget priced horizontal shooter with quality scrolling and very strange enemies.
5: Lemmings - It defines the Amiga, but to attempt this on the CPC shows that it can handle a lot sprites quite well.
6: Bubble Bobble 4CPC - This remake is exactly how the game should of played in the first place.
7: Catastrophe - A 2 player Amsoft game where you play as helicopters making a building out of blocks battling the weather conditions. Brilliant!

Trailblazer (amazing scrolling for it's time)
Renegade (Arcade conversion that often gets overlooked for it's successor)
Deflektor (I still haven't played anything like this to this day)
Sir Lancelot (A platformer that can still tax your brain)
Auf Wiedersehen Monty (Really has to be played in a particular order in order to finish, I still have yet to finish it!)
Bounder (Requires timing which threw a lot of people off, but I loved it)

I believe the title to be a game which is great fun but very few people have played it. So something not known well. It may not be graphically good but it plays well and is very fun.

Catastrophe could be one of those. I never heard of this game. Never played it, but sigh and Zoe claim it's fun, so I believe it qualifies.

There are many good games on cpc which almost everyone has played (renegade, gryzor etc) but I don't think these qualify.

Agreed. In that case I will tweak my list:

Had never heard of these until joining this forum:

Starion - it has amazing vector graphics and the speed is incredible as it's very smooth.
Martechs Nigel Mansell Grand Prix - The pseudo 3d road is the fastest and smoothest I have ever seen on a cpc.

Owned these, but believed to have not much coverage:

Catastrophe - A 2 player Amsoft game where you play as helicopters making a building out of blocks battling the weather conditions. Brilliant!
The Scout Steps Out - lovely platformer (again by Amsoft) where you play as a boy scout who has to collect badges. The levels are quite big.

Remember guys this list is for those people not too familiar with the CPC ... who perhaps only know that 'Chase HQ, Gryzor, Operation Wolf and Robocop were apparently good' or are familiar with the big releases that were often multi platform.

So we're looking for those hidden gems and ones that weren't multi platform where it could be argued 'the C64 version was better because of blah blah'. (And it's why I've included recent homebrew releases and a couple of cart games.)

That's how I read the initial post by Darran.

Fruity Frank

Because I didn't read closely enough it's 10 games he wants so here's my 10...

(again in no particular order of preference but with reasons why)...

#1 Orion Prime
The CPC doesn't have many point-and-click adventure games, and it really hurt to leave the excellent B.A.T. off this list, but the 2009 release of the Orion Prime mega game simply surpasses it in sheer size, scale and unbelievable presentation. The most gripping and involving game on the CPC that even arcade gamers that are not inclined towards adventure games can easily and quickly get sucked in and remained hooked for the many hours of gameplay.

#2 BB4CPC (Bubble Bobble For CPC)
Yes it's a home brew remake - I hope this is allowed in the list? But here we have a stunning version of Bubble Bobble that is incredibly accurate to the arcade original that also beats any other competing version on a home 8-bit micro.

#3 R-Type 128k
Another home brew remake? We all know what a stunning job the Easter Egg team did here. It looks the business and any R-Type fan would be happy playing this.

#4 Island Of Dr Destructo
The first of two budget releases in this list. If you want a quick pick up and play blaster, there are none more fun and nicely presented as this Destructo! This is a fantastic simple but hugely fun and addictive budget release. Blast the enemy out of the sky and rain hell on the ships and fortresses below with the debris slowly causing the desctruction and their eventual sinking into the ocean depths! Wicked fun.

#5 Killer Cobra
The second budget release in this list. If you're a fan of Scramble you HAVE to check out this super fast and slick clone, with some of the smoothest scrolling ever seen on an Amstrad.

#6 Prohibition
If you enjoyed Operation Wolf on the CPC then this is a must. You have your cross hairs and you have to gun down your enemy, but rather than fixed scrolling you have to look around to find your enemy before he shoots you! But don't take too long! Features again some of the smoothest scrolling on the CPC.

#7 Megablasters
Dynablasters/Bomberman on the CPC! Need I say more? Oh yea - you can have 4 player co-op on this too!

#8 Fres Fighter
Most 1v1 beat-em-ups on the CPC were dreadful. Here's the exception with stunning presentation and animation throughout.

#9 Prehistorik II
It pained me to leave Super Cauldron off the list which was from the same author and released in the same year - but this is just more fun and better presented. The ultimate platformer on the CPC.

#10 Werewolves Of London
Arguably not the greatest ever game in the world, but if you're looking for a killer concept of a game married with some of the best graphics and music on the CPC - look no further.

Honourable mentions -

Invasion Of The Zombie Monsters
Super Cauldron
Xyphoes Fantasy
Nighthunter
Star Sabre
AMC : Astro Marine Corps
Fluff
B.A.T.
Hostages
North & South
H.E.R.O.
Pang
Navy Seals
Fruity Frank

And I know I've missed loads.

Here's another game you may want to consider - Mission Elevator by Micropool (http://www.cpc-power.com/index.php?page=detail&num=1434). I've played this for the very first time today and I can't believe I've missed out on this gem for so long! :o It's quite similar in style to Elevator Action. You have to explore a 64-floor hotel and search the furniture very carefully to find clues to defuse the bomb on the very top floor, all while dodging gun-toting gangsters.

Croco Magneto, which I submit is far too addictive for its own good, is available as a browser game so if anyone is so infected by fanboyitis that they couldn't bring themselves to play this gem on a real computer (i.e. a CPC) then they can play it in a browser. I wonder if someone shouldn't contact Darran, since the forum email notifications aren't working... anyone care to do it?

Here is 10 random picks. I know it can be a bit situational depening on where you live in the world so what is "never played"

Mr. Heli: Never seen this one on budget. One of those games where if you didnt walk into the game shop the right time of that month you just never ever get a second chance to buy it. I never saw it.

Pirates!: £20 price. 6128 disc only. I think the high overprice is what dragged the game reviews down the the odd average score & gray dull half a page with little to none pictures. The cover didnt help either. No offence to the artist as an adult i can appreciate it, but as a game hungry teenager i would have had a lot more pirates, soldiers, damsels in distress along with the usual explotion or cannonfire. Luckily i got to play the game on a friends 6128 back then & have bought pretty much every new version since then.

Asphalt:Tough little game inspired by Mad Max 2 i guess. A bit short perhaps thanks to the difficulty of the game, but its one of those that i keep telling myself "just one more go" again & again. Never seen the game for sale, not even used/resale.

Kung Fu: Was one of the very first Amstrad Action Covertape. Tried to load it but it kept crashing. Oh the dissapointment .. especially as it was a marterial arts game (that was still kinda hot back then with Bruce Lee etc). Many years later i tried loading the game again & due to the gained experience i could hear that the "pause gap" (silence) between the loading block the record was too litlle thus making the game crash. Easily fixed simlpy by pressing the pause button for a couple of seconds or making a manual copy to a different tape. Always made me wonder how many amstrad users has the game but never got around to experience it. Then again .. i wouldnt label as a "great" game.

Sim City: First experienced the game on a Amiga 500. Later discovered there was a amstrad version that i oddly didnt remember. So i went back and looked thru my old mags & found the commercial for the game. Full page, colour, might as well have been a abstract painting though (me being a teenager etc). I guess this is a bit like the Pirates! issue .. how do you sell something completely new/new idea? Great version though.

Satan: Really good looking game. Black Tiger style gameplay but Black Tiger could only hope to look this good. I dont think this was sold outside the original boxed version.

Baby Jo in Going Home: Nice big happy sprites & has a bit of a "nextgen" feel to it. Disc only & most likely also 6128 only too. 1991 so it was a late game. Did feature in a couple of compilation in 1993 but by then most people had moved on to the 16bits.

West Bank: Brilliant conversion of Sega "Bank Panic" arcade game. Giant sprites, colourfull characters, good variatiom, and a increasing difficulty. Perhaps not so rare a game, but it dont pop up often on like ebay.

Skweek: Pretty amazing & addictive gameplay. Fairly classic "fill in the squares" puzzle/gameplay ala pacman. Lovely bright and sparkly colours though. Might as well mention the followup Super Skweek. Perhaps its a regional thing but i didnt see it even though its a 1989 game.

Donkey Kong: A trulely amazing conversion of the arcade game. Sure it isnt rare now as its probably one amstrad fans will likely mention .. but it never really resold in any way, so technically it quite rare & always has a silly high price like £100 on ebay. So many games never got around to be resold on budget or compilation & this one is definately one of them. Wonder if the average reviews made it worse for many games like this.

Livingstone I Presume
Livingstone I presume
The Duct (covertape, loading issues again)
Arkanoid 2

I remember when playing sim city I would build the place up then make the reactor blow up speed up the time and wait to see how long the radiation cleared
