The NEW R-TYpe anyone got it onto a 3 /12 inch floppy?

and if so how

MacDeath

you don't have any hardware solution to write 3"1/2 disks from a "modern" PC ?

I managed to put a WinXp (pack2) on an old portable Sony Vaio in 233mhz and something like only 192megs or RAM.
I can plug  USB sticks on it...(because Xp wins !!!)
and it had in-built floppy... perfect !!!

Needless to say, this old piece of crap serves only to write disks when in retro-conventions...   and it is itself a retro-thing anyway.

I also still have good old floppy disk drive on my tower PC despite it being Win8 and 4gigas rams and tri-core and whatever...

then I stockpile Floppy new boxes whenever I can.

dcdrac

I do jave a working 720 capable USB floppy and have been using CPCXP to extract files from DSk then dump them on to a 3 1/2 inch floppy however this one is putting up a fight

MacDeath

the disk drive or the floppy ? or the dsk/game ?

What floppy do you use , an old used 720k disk or a recent 1.44 floppy with some tape on the hole ?

where did you get the .dsk ?

tried there ?

(yeah, this is some troubleshoting i'm doing here...)

dcdrac

Using a batch of refurbed 720K discs and a USB drive capable of using them

I got the DSk from the actual official game site  it is meant to be the 3 1/2 inch version

Cholo just worked that was an easy one.

elite is proving a pain not sure if that is because it does not get on with the Amstrad Plus or not keeps telling me some files are not three when they are, the original version I have does not like the Plus but works fine on my two old style 6128s

dcdrac

Here is Cholo in a state it can be transferred using CPCXp

MacDeath

USB disk drives are not the easier way from what I remember...
you should better get your hand on a "very old" portable PC from the very begining of Xp end of Win98... those often still had built-in Floppy drive alongside USB ports. would cost nothing and can run Xp (despite badly).

and try to find brand new boxes of HD1.44megs floppies never used, and turn them into DD720K jsut with a sticker on the "HD hole".

720K disks were often lower quality, and they are msot of time older.
in the mide90's, none were still produced I guess... could only find HD floppies.
a 10 years older floppy is not the best choice.

just my humble opinion. I may be wrong of course.

but yeah not easy to find new boxes of floppies, I could get at some old small computer shops, or at retro coding-events demo/parties.

dcdrac

I have a stack of old HD floppies I will try sometime soon, the indicator if something is going to work is if there is a .BAS file, if it is al l.BIN files its hit and miss

Got Savage extracted and working on 3 1/2 inch floppy.

Still looks great

MacDeath

Savage was impressive... small screen (speccy sized) but big sprites and effects and badaass awesome animation and graphics.

Could give C64 a run for its money.

TotO

Using CPCDiskXP or any program that allow to transfer 3"1/2 DSK images on a real floppy should work with R-Type.
The game is not protected at all... (tracks use 10 sectors of 512 bytes)

Dominic, i can provide you a floppy disk with R-type written on a fresh disk if you want with the tapes you sent me back :)

MacDeath

yeah, all you have to do is to find a "recent" floppy, not a 25+ years old overused cheap low quality SD or DD with added hole and bad dusty storage on a huge speaker magnet during 20 years in a moistered cave with liquid damage... that was used for all saves and tests on various systems... ;D

One day I tested some DD floppys from a friend (PC-MSDos pirated games)... none of them worked again.
Original games may work because you never re-used those nor write anything on those. Most of my PC original games do still work !

Night shift, Disc (Loriciel's), Budokan, speedball2... from 1990-1992... and never overwrited ever.

Floppies used with "copied" illegal softs were very often re-re-re-used multiple times or handled with less cares... or were of inferior quality to begin with.

original paid for expensive disks were handled with much care, even if this was done "inconsioulsy"*

*not sure about this word in englitch

I have 200 empty floppies new :) And they are working great (i bought them in USA), so there's no problem with this :)

Gryzor

Just a note, all the games in file form (that is, not disk images) can be found in the CPCGamesCD collection. No need to rip them.

Do you think so? :)

C64

Amstrad CPC

In spite I even include the Spectrum-version

Do the Amiga version look better than the CPC version?

TFM

Well, the c64 version is clearly the worst due to the usage of faded colors. The Amiga version is not better than the CPC version, just different.  :P

I guess you shouldn't post such huge ugly C64 jpg screenshots... (or even speccy) and no jpg at all please...

:D

funniest part is that you only need slightly modified  5"1/4 flat cable/floppy connector.

you know, this website is not only a forum, there is also a whole Wiki with it...

The troubles with using the new CPCDiskXP formats that are PC USB floppy drive friendly and 6128 friendly at the same time .. you pretty much can only transfer 100% unprotected "native" amstrad system block files. So no raw disc copy .. even if the DSK isnt protected in any way.

Thinking a bit out of the box here, but this may work:

Solution if you have 2 drives: aka like you have a 6128 with internal 3" drive and a 3,5" external. Get the normal version of Symbos and transfer it to 3" disc .. it should be possible even tho its 2 sides big it should still be unproteced files only. Note that Symbos does not need any additional hardware and you can use a joystick to move the mouse cursor. Once Symbos is loaded it automaticly recognises 720k pc formatted floppies in your 3,5" drive and can read/write. Symbos even has a a DSK extractor so from this point on you can just put a DSK-file of R-type on a 720k directly then put that floppy in your 6128 3,5" drive and extract it to your internal 3".

Solution if you have 1 drive only: aka you only have a 6128 with a internal 3,5" drive. Get Xeror. There is thankfully a unprotected version of Xeror so it should be able to transfer. Xeror is a not only a disc copying software .. it also can make images of whole floopies and store them as .ARC on a DSK (think like Zip or RAR formats but of a disk).
So lets say you want to transfer a troublessome game like R-type .. on your pc load emulator and "compress" an image of it to normal DSK. Open the DSK containing the .ARC file in CPCDiskXP and output it in a 42 track 250k usb friendly format. Once on the amstrad youll have to extract the .ARC. Thankfully Xeror supports A: to A:  copy so prepare yourself for a bit of oldstyle disc swapping as you partially copy from the source into memory and then onto destination disc a couple of times.

What can go wrong: lots. Perhaps Symbos/Xeror isnt as unproteced as i think .. even tho ive file juggled with em both before there might be something im missing. My biggest fear is if Xexor will recognise the new 160k 250k CPCDiskXP formats.
