Title: Toki (Map Demo) by Praline
Post by: Maniac on 15:39, 24 August 20
Has anyone else seen this that was posted on one of the Amstrad Facebook groups:

Whilst I'm looking forward to the GGP version this unplayable demo of the level 1 map looks stunning. Personally I think barjack is one of the best pixel artists on the CPC. When I saw the video I had to double take as this didn't look like the CPC (not Plus) palette. Nice work.

To bring up the HUD you need to press 'H' once the demo starts. You can also switch the scrolling method by pressing 'S' and turn off the music with 'M'.

Thanks, that's nice ;)

To put things straight, this comes from a "bickering" with the authors of Toki GGP, following non-aggressive criticism of their graphics which they took badly (from me and others). There is nothing mean, on the contrary, the mockery owed to their attitudes, but not in order to make fun of their work.

I would add to that, that I did this quickly in two weeks, with the help of 2 coders and a musician, that the gfx are adapted from toki, ruff n tumble and a bit of my personal gfx :)

On the other hand I took again the tree trunk (splendid) of carnivac without asking him and I apologize to him.

Being given that this was just a demo for GGP to get them back down a bit to hear them just say that their graphics were perfect, but just in a different style and take all the criticism down, I thought to myself that was not really useful to ask him not to hide from me ...

I hope the GGP will review their previews a bit, otherwise it's okay, everyone does as they see fit;)

I thought this looked excellent when I saw it, good use of the palette to manage the waterfalls and per-area palette changes in a scroller.

Hey, that's some nice pixelwork, although to be fair if it were to actually be used in the game it would be a challenge with balancing between how fast sprites get printed over background and at what scrolling speed.

On the other hand, even as a proof of concept, it really shows what can be done with pixels on the CPC. I still cannot believe how some people found that the GGP Toki preview 'looking amazing'. Even by 80s standards, it looks mediocre at best. Also, sprites disappearing when reaching the screen edge... ugh!?

The authors of Toki remake declared to be amateurs and not professionals. This is an old friendship project started in the 90's and never finished. I guess some superlatives were used for motivation as the project is now well advanced. Even the result is not professional, a new game is always a great news

Sure thing. We are all amateurs the people who do things on the CPC after all. And yes, new prods is always a good thing, but not all new prods are 'amazing' by default. My comment was pointing mostly to this 'everything is amazing' mentality where criticism is 'forbidden'. Learning is about somebody pointing out things that can be made better.

Also, the background story behind Toki sounds cool, but I only comment based what I see and read.

Thank you Rex, it's a speech that is nice to hear ;) Criticism can be constructive, everyone learns from everyone, and it's good for the whole.

You have to pull the graphics and productions in general up on cpc ;)

And yes Roudoudou, it is obvious that it is not to attack people who develop, on the contrary.

I would pay homage to the coders of the demo, it is not forgotten, but I do not know if they want to be quoted due to the controversy that there is around :)

The music is by Siko;)

It's a shame that some graphic designers don't get more inspiration or just don't interact with each other on cpc. I learned a lot about cpc by drawing inspiration from and talking to others.
The goal is to honor the cpc, it deserves a lot of things that i have seen happen for years.

It is obvious that you should not be too demanding with a beginner, but criticism is constructive. It "stings" a little, but I often thank beb for having "stung" me, it allows more to improve than comments, admittedly nice, but without any arguments.

Rexbeng has very original palette choices, and a really cool horizontal weaving technique that marks its style.

Sigh has incredibly detailed animations with very few steps, it's fresh and vibrant.

Carnivac has a remarkable attention to detail.

Beb is a whole and he has very good ideas and is very innovative in graphic techniques (splits, modes etc ...).

Ced Trames beautifully.

For the most part all of them have been working for the cpc for years and I am still surprised to meet new graphic designers on cpc who do not know their name or their work.

Gurneyh: There is no official site.

I deduce that we can say that it is you who mainly coded the Demo  ;)
Thank you  :-*
