Title: Wonderboy Remake?
Post by: Mr. DVG on 22:53, 25 November 19
Wonderboy remake?  :P

Maybe I say and maybe the dream could become a reality as someone is already worrying about preparing all the graphics of the game (which at first glance seems already splendid)!

I remember that Benjamin Yoris is already busy making the remake of The New Zealand Story for the plus series of Amstrad, while the remake of Wonderboy will be for the "old" machines (with my great joy and joy).  ;D

With these assumptions it will not be difficult for him to find a coder and a musician and I wish him great luck (and one of the first "physical" releases of the complete game already booked)! ;)

Below official link to the author's post on twitter and the three images released!

Big fan of this one in the arcade, and even on the CPC (despite the horrible flickery sprites and jerky scrolling).

So I'm looking forward to this seeing the light of day.

excellent stuff. All colors accurate, and it is like watching the arcade. Big fan of the series.
Especially of the monster land one.

Super Wonderboy was too slow and full of bugs. And it was a speccy port cliché. The game always failed during play.

Neglected to note that i was fan of the arcade version of the wonderboy in monster land! The cpc version was a dissapointment.
always finished it with one coin back then, trying to get as much gold as i could - the primal version of  'bitcoins' - or should i name it as  '8 bit coins'  ;) ? .
It would be a very interesting future project by a team of at least 3-4 people.

But wonderboy 1, needs definitely a remake with better scrolling and graphics. I am happy that the second target is already accomplished  :)

This isn't strictly true. The tape version was bugged to hell, often crashing as the tape went to load the next level.
The disk version was fine, however. But as you said, very slow.

At least we got to see the ending of the game.
Unlike Spectrum owners, who got an indestructible dragon at the end lol. Although a homebrew patch fixed that... eventually xD

OMG! They really did the job quick and dirty, just to cash in from home computer users.  >:(

On the Sega it's a bit better, but the legs move terrible. The legs move forward and not backward, this looks so bad.

If you search on our forum for Super Wonder Boy, there's a link to the World Of Spectrum forum where they talk about it.
They used the CPC's code to find the bug in the Speccy version.

This looks absolutely wonderful!
I'm one of those strange people that actually enjoyed the original CPC version, despite its obvious shortcomings.
But this new version looks like it will be MUCH better in absolutely every way, and I can't wait to try it!
(Actually it looks better than most CPC scrolling platformers!)

Not my favourite, but I played it a lot at school (because the computing lab, all CPC 6128; didn't have a lot of games to choose from).

This version looks very nice!

Basically the CPC version only took the C64 graphics and took the code and sound from the Spectrum, explaining the flicker and the slow speed. The Speccy version plays identical!

I usually wait until the game is finished before I get stuck in, but for this I'll probably make an exception as I'm a huge fan of this (and it's sequel) :)

It's Christmas dear fellow Amstrad users !

Please enjoy this (short) first level of WonderBoy Remake. You'll need a CPC with 128k.
All info in the readme.

Don't hesitate to comment, to give your feedback. Even insults are welcome !

Wonderful Xmas to all of you !

Early Troubleshooting :

- the GX4000 pad seems to be only working on port #2 on a PLUS or GX4000
- on OLD CPC the pad GX4000 won't work sadly, you'll have to use keyboard
- it's also reported that TAB + A is replaced by F + G on an OLD keyboard

Sorry for all this, that's why we do BETA versions ...

No problems with my cpc 6128 old qwerty. Very strange  :o
For the joypad it's port 1 and not 2

Fantastic! These Christmas gifts make you feel really good! :D
I never fully appreciated the old version of Wonderboy, just because, compared to the C64 version, the scrolling was really too jerky!

Now everything seems to "flow" in the right direction! Compliments!

My invitation is to go ahead with the project and never give up, until the end! Today, compared to yesterday, we can take all the time to develop a product that is competitive and above all we have the means to do so.

Cartridges like 512kb are now a reality (see Alcon 2020 and Dandanator), we can put all levels of the game in memory and take advantage of the 6 channels of the PlayCity to have music and sound effects at the same time... In short, the possibilities are there and they are within everyone's reach!

Good luck guys! With these intentions and with what you are doing so far Wonderboy on Amstrad CPC will be fantastic! ;)

I have tested this beta for a long time, and being a big fan of the arcade version of Wonderboy I renew my congratulations to the staff for the accuracy that has been infused into this first playable level.

I found (pleasantly) more or less the same gameplay as when playing the original arcade. Enemies, fruits, hidden bonuses, power ups and various traps are all where they should be (I miss the sound effects, but I know they will be implemented in future releases). I have noticed a few times some not perfect collisions (it happened to me with boulders and with some platforms) and Tom Tom seems to "slip" a little too much when he collides with stones on the ground (nothing serious for charity).

Scrolling is less smooth when Tom Tom walks or am I wrong? (you may notice a flickering on the sides of the screen).

Another thing concerns the guardian angel power-up. If you make a jump from a high platform that makes it go over the top screen the angel automatically disappears. In the original arcade it doesn't disappear like this!

That said, what I see is incredible and I can not help but bow in front of such great care and love for this beautiful computer, very little used in its commercial period (in Italy the Amstrad CPC situation is very bad, we know it very few, but it's a piece of my childhood heart and that's fine for me).

Thanks for everything! :-*

Not really less fluid, but indeed the edges of the screen "jump". With variable speed scrolling, I haven't found the solution yet.

Yes, it's a bug ! Nice catch :)

Thank you very much for the test, and we are delighted that you get back the sensations of the original game. This is what was missing from all the conversions on 8-bit computers.

It being understood that even if the scrolling remained like this, it would still be perfect! ;D

Very true! The identical gameplay to the original is an added value to your project and already so this version is the best of all those released on 8-bit computers of that period (I put it on a par with the sega master system and game gear versions)!

Can't wait to play a new release of this fantastic Amstrad CPC version! :P

Congratulations to Benjamin Yoris and the rest of the development team,

This beta is already a very good version, I can only find two important things to improve as already pointed by others: the flickering in the sides of the screen when the boy walks and polishing a little bit the animation when it runs/walks. I have really enjoyed it a lot !!

Keep the good work and thank you for this X-mass gift!

First of all thank you :)

In the commercial era, as I said above, conversions on the amstrad CPC and on all platforms were subject to heavy constraints.
Today in the case of Wonderboy, it's just a hobbyist project, and we know we have all the time we need: the difference is huge.
As far as the tools are concerned, of course it's totally different, even if in the commercial era the crossdev already existed. We are very privileged today and we can't compare with the "old" ones.

If you need a beta tester for upcoming releases, feel free to count on me! ;)

Me too if you need a second beta tester! With Ireland in it's third poxy lockdown, I could do with something in the evenings! :D

Of course, we'll have to wait a few weeks now. There is still a lot of work to do.
But it's well noted, thank you.

Hi GurneyH,

I watched Xyphoes Amstream on January 8th where Xyphoe presents your one level demo of the Wonderboy Remake and complains about the flickering scrolling.

I briefly chatted with you on the stream and I wrote you a message about how to avoid the flickering of the scrolling. I'm not sure whether you read it or not because you didn't respond to it.

So I've created a short demo of how to remove the flickering border when using a CRTC register 3 scrolling with a regular 80 bytes by 200 lines resolution on the CPC. Essentially you have to sacrifice two byte columns, one on the left side of the screen and one on the right side of the screen in order to remove the flicker.

You can see a demo and an explanation in the attached ZIP file. Just open the DSK file and type run"st" and then you can switch between the smooth scrolling by pressing the "s" key and go back to the flickering scrolling by pressing the "d" key.

I didn't include an example on how to stop the scrolling, but I assume you will be able to fix this in a similar manner. Just add the black byte columns to both sides of the screen in both screens when stopping the scrolling using double buffering.

best wishes and carry on the good work,
Odiesoft

I didn't see it. Sorry.

I know how to avoid flickering using r3.

or

What I don't know how to do is to avoid this flickering with a variable speed scroll (1 or 2 bytes) as it is the case in Wonderboy. :(

I will take a look at your demo. Thank you! :)

edit:
I watched your demo. Nice! But unfortunately it won't solve my problem. :(

Yes! :)

After Wonderboy, I promise :)

Hi GurneyH,

Changing scrolling speeds is also no problem with this anti-flicker method. When scrolling with 2 bytes per frame you need to add black one byte columns to both sides of the screen, so that the screen width doesn't suddenly change when switching from one byte to two byte scrolling.

For the transition between the scrolling speeds you need to write short routines to remove the additional black columns you had to add for the according scrolling speed. But that is also possible with very little code.

I've attached a demo of the scrolling in two speeds and also included a no-scrolling option where you can stop the scrolling altogether. Type run"tsp" to see this demo.

best wishes,
Odiesoft

the Crownland and TokiMap Demo look amazing! I'm looking forward to play the game of Crownland once it's finished (and the Wonderland Remake is done)!

hi odiesoft,

First thank you for the help ! :)

I have just tested the demo, which works perfectly. It's going to help me.

As I explained, I have no problem stopping the scrolling even when I display black stripes, it's the change of step that I have a problem with. But yes, the solution is to rewrite over the black strip. I'll see if it doesn't penalize too much in time.

Thank you again.

edit: @odiesoft (https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1822)

Wonderboy is now flicker-free thanks to you. :)

I don't use the same principle, but seeing how you wait until r3 is in a compatible position to stop the scroll gave me an idea.
And without penalty. Many thanks!

Hi gurneyh,

I'm happy I could be of service!

Some while ago I spend a lot of time on an (yet unreleased) project with different scrolling speeds that was a lot more complex than this. So I have some experience with this kind of stuff.

Waiting on the correct value in r3 is a nice trick and the players will barely realise that they sometimes have to wait for one more frame before their character changes running speeds. The players don't need to know everything all the time :-)

I'm looking forward to see the next flicker free Wonderboy demo!

best wishes,
Odiesoft

As an Amstrad CPC fan you are most likely so old now that you wouldn't see the difference without wearing your bifocal glasses!  ;D

The joke's on you, not only do I not wear bifocals, but my short-sightedness does not show signs of regression :D GIVE ME BACK MY FRAME RATES!*

*also, the ability to play on my CPC till early morning and then go to work like nothing has happened.

It is absolutely not my intention to rush the programmers, but since it's been months since the first release I would just like to know if the project is moving forward and if I can encourage even more the good programmers who are doing the excellent conversion!  ;)

The second level is almost finished.
However, the project is not progressing very well at the moment due to a lack of time and a small lack of motivation.
Only a problem related to the developer. :)

The motivation thing could have meant anything though. Developer could be going through something unrelated to the game, or just needed a time out.

Yes of course. But I was merely trying to motivate the developer by highlighting a positive thing :).

Hello,

nearly one year later, I wanted to give some news about our WonderBoy Remake.

The level 2 is still work in progress. Some screenshots were published in the #50 issue of the french magazine Amstrad 100%.

Here are those shots and hopefully we'll have some more news in 2022.

In the meantime, enjoy the holiday season !

Best,
Ben OneVision Yoris

It's been a while since we gave news about the Wonderboy Remake project for Amstrad 128K.

Sadly, the project is now on hold, because life has its priorites and the coder on this project must tend to them.

I wanted anyway to share what we've done so far. You'll find a CPR that you can run on your M4 or your favorite emulator. If you hit 2 on the title screen, you'll be able to play approx. 3/4 of the level 1.2 with some bugs and the impossibility to finish it (because at some point 2 clouds are too distant to reach the end of the level). You'll nevertheless be able to enjoy and see by yourselves how far we've gone.

I wish I could tell you when we'll be able to complete this project. As you can imagine, such retrogaming projects are very demanding both in time and motivation. And we all have lives to live.

Anyway, I think we made it clear that a better version of WonderBoy is possible on "old" Amstrad 128K, without needing the features of the PLUS series.

For the moment, I'll let you enjoy this and I just wanted you to know that, along with some other people, I'm working on another Amstrad project, which could bring something "magical" to the Amstrad game collection...

Take care,
Ben *OneVision* Yoris

It's a shame, after all the effort and work dedicated to the game, I think the game deserves to end, I hope that in the future it will be achieved.

I hope the developer's real-life issues work out.

Any chance of putting the project on github if not, so other people can work on it, or at least the work to date is not lost?

Thanks for your concern, but really it's just other not necessarily bad priorities that are keeping me away from the CPC.

The project is already on a private git repository, but the quality of the code really doesn't deserve that others suffer :)
