Hello all, just wanted to say hello to the group as I am a new member. My main area of retro interest lies with the Commodore Amiga but I am also interested in all retro consoles and Computers and seeing as I just got myself a really nice clean CPC464 (and a GX4000 on the way) I thought I would join here. I also would very much like to got hold of one of gerald's C4CPC flash carts, but seeing as I am a new member I realise that I may not be lucky this time around.
Hope to see you all about the forums soon :)
Welcome. :)
The Amiga was my choice of 16-bit machine as much as the 464 was my 8-bit. :D
Thank you Carnivac, yery I love my Amiga A4000, I just got it all up and running and it's working like a dream now. No mean feat but worth the efforts. I never owned an Amstrad back in the day I had a Spectrum but I sure with I had now, the CPC464 is a lovely machine.
Heh. I have the A1200 which while technically a 32-bit I still class as 16-bit era as most of the software is A500.
And yeah the 464 is lovely. Had mine for about 31 years now and still works beautifully.
Yes your right there, I hadn't really considered that before, the A1200 and A4000 are 32bit but the games kind of look like 16bit games, even the AGA versions. I wonder why that is?
Probably because they weren't that much more advanced than the older Amigas whereas proper 32-bit consoles like the PlayStation were bringing the '3D revolution" into homes. Though I generally I still prefered the 16-bit era. Lots of 2D games still look great wheras PS1-era 3D looks generally awful. My fave game on PS1 is actually Castlevania: Symphony of the Night which is 2D (some of it's sprites are recycled from the 16-bit era Castlevanias). So yeah to me, the A1200, 4000 and CD32 are more like 16-bit Plus in a way. Just more colours and speed but not a real noticable advancement. Love my A1200 though. :)
Very well explained, thank you :D

No way really? in the Bromley store? I used to work in the HG Wells restaurant on the 1st floor at a Saturday job in the early 90's. Also it is the place I purchased my A1200 from!
I was on a work placement so did a stint in all those restaurants. I remember the pool table in honeycomb was my fave place lol.
I nearly bought my megadrive there...... But postponed it until I had moved to uni in Torquay.
I think I was there for the summer of 90 an then on Saturdays for the following year until July 91.
Wow small world, I also worked in the Honeycomb sometimes when they were short staffed. I don't remember the Pool table though must have been after my time.
I wonder if we ever met? I was there in 1990 I think, do you mind PMing me your real name? would be funny I knew you lol

the craziest memory was running up the down escalator from the coffee shop in the basement all the time because it was much closer than the stairs or up escalator!
Pm sent.

I remember after work nights out to the ritzy nightclub in streatham on Saturday nights, oh and spending large amounts of my insignificant paycheck in the hmv and our price stores during my lunch breaks.
Yes I remember being invited to those nights out but I always hated night clubs so never went. I did go for drinks in the staff bar after work though.
;)
welcome:)

Of course, we love to talk about PCW, Amstrad PCs and NC200... Amstrad built Speccys as well but only to badmouth about them of course.
The rest ? what rest ?

You are the same Roy Bates from AmiBay right?
Yes, he's the same Roy. There's quite a few CPCWiki users over on Amibay too.

Hopefully ;)
Which reminds me.... The BBQ invite for the First weekend in August will be made again soon. 3 months notice this year so no 'not enough notice' excuses LOL. Too expensive airfare excuses are still accepted. Will start a new thread when the brewing for the bar starts.

Technically the A500 is 32 bit as well, just with 16 bit performance! :-\
Welcome manic23 :)

Welcome manic23 :)
So is there an Amiga using a 32 bit data bus for periphery?
I am not sure about that TFM I am not really that technical I just enjoy using these old systems I never really worry that much about what's under the hood. I'm sure someone here will know though :)

The Amiga 1200 has a 32-bit data bus and the peripherals (if you meant those on board) are 32-bit as well. It's just that the 68ec020 has a 24-bit address bus, so only 16mb can be addressed. 16mb at the time was too expensive anyway, so that limit didn't have much of an impact. Later turbo cards feature better processors that can handle the full 32-bit address range.
Amiga 1200 – Wikipedia (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga_1200#Hauptprozessor)
This is one of those things that gets people very confused. The 68000 that the Amiga 500 is built on is a 32bit CPU (ie: instructions are 32bits long), but it has a 16bit databus and a 24bit address bus.
The Amiga A1200 used the 68EC020 which is also a 32bit CPU and 24bit address bus, but the databus was increased to 32bit.

Exactly.
@TFM (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=179) - the later A2000 (some models), A3000 and A4000 were 32/32/32.
Ok, thanks to all of you for the excursion into another world. :)
Wow who would thought that a simple introduction email on a CPC forum would trigger a debate on if the Amiga was 16 or 32 bit lol you can never predict what direction a thread will take.
Hehe, if you are comfortable with this then you are at the right place, because these things happen here all the time. :D
Oh yea totally comfortable it's great to have these discussions just didn't expect it ;)
What? Someone new joined? I must have missed that bit of the thread. :D
Bryce.
Welcome too.

I think intro to Amiga bit count via allders in the early 90's is a bit off the wall even for us! But why I love this place.
lol, thanks guys, very nice friendly place to be, I'm glad I joined. also I got my brand new old stock GX4000 today so happy days!
hahaha i love the randomness of retro computers. ;D
