Hi, folks!

I recently created a profile here, and when I post messages, I see the line 'speccy' under my name!  ???
Why is the line there, and how can I change it?

Bryce

The "Speccy" is a way of showing how many posts you've made in the Forum, as you post more, you'll progress through 464 -> 664 -> 6128 -> Plus etc. until you make it to the top level, which is.....?

Bryce.

MacDeath

Yes, Speccy+2 and +3 are somewhat Amstrad Computers anyway.

Nordeide

Ah, I see. Cool!  8)
I hope I'll reach the CPC6128 level one day then, since that's the Amstrad that I own!

Gryzor

Heheheh funny discussion :D

In the attached image you can seethe settings I have set for the categories. Of course they're pretty arbitrary. So if you've got any nice ideas about it let me know :)

So what about the tagline underneath... how does this change (yours says "CPC Wiki Maintainer")?

Gryzor

You can control this yourself in your profile settings :)

ukmarkh

I love the idea of working your way up to a 6128 Plus... what's next? Memory upgrades, and other expensive add-on peripheral devices.  :P

Keep up the good work Gryzor, you're one in a million  :)

MacDeath

Then PCW, and Then Amstrad PC1512...then 1640... then...

Bryce

...when you get to 10,000 posts you go back to being a C64 and have to work your way back up to Speccy again? :D

Bryce.

Gryzor

Well, we could add a further step (something like CPC+SFII+HxC+MegaROM+whatever) but it's getting silly... :D Maybe we should throw the GX somewhere in there? Between the normal and Plus ranges? And what about the post numbers, do they look logical to you?

@ukmarkh: aw man, stop it :D

This could be used... ;)
Well, in addtion to the PLUS upgrade...

Also the GX4000 status should be inferior to 464+....

Gryzor

Yeah, as I said it should be between the classic and Plus ranges, hence Speccy/breadbin (?)/464/664/6128/GX/464Plus/6128Plus...

But it's hard to fit the classes - either you put "Class #", which nobody will know what it is, or the whole description, which is not that nice...

Gryzor

CP/M User suggested the following classification strata:

Speccy - 0-149
CPC464 - 150-499
CPC664 - 500-1499
CPC6128 - 1500-2999
PCW8256 - 3000-4999
PCW9512 - 5000-7499
CPC464+ - 7500-9999
CPC6128+ - 10000-12499
NC100 - 12500-14999
NC200 - 15000-17499
PCW16 - 17500-19999
One Compulsive Son of a Beep! 20000+

Of course the numbers of posts should be adjusted towards more realistic levels, but it's interesting... especially the NCs. Should we add them? And where? But, again, I think the 6128+ should be the ultimate...

What about the Kc compact or even the 472!! could they fit in!!

For me the highest level should be awarded to the grey "Arnold" see

http://www.cpcwiki.eu/imgs/3/3d/GA_high_res.JPG

since its the hardest to achieve probably in anyone's cpc collection's --who's got one??  and reflects the time and effort its taken to accumulate enough posts (unlike me!!!) and suggests its been around a long time!!

but thats my humble opinion.

I don't like speccy much its a rung below amstrad radios
see:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMSTRAD-MODEL-6011-CB-SW-MB-MW-LW-FM-AIR-RADIO-/320641836867?pt=UK_AudioVisualElectronics_PortableAudio_Radios

Now please note this is not a plug for my own "radio auction" .
I am not Danadoop2009 so i cannot answer any questions re condition or funtionality of this particular product!!

Gryzor

I think the KC and the 472 goes too far... the KC was a clone, and the 472 was just a name. Then maybe we should add Aleste? :D

Speccy was meant as a joke, nothing more, that's why the second rank has such a low limit.

But there's something there with the gray 464 - maybe give it a crazy post number as the Holy Grail... :)

If you declare being a spanish, then the site state you as a CPC472 user instead of a CPC464 user...lol is it even possible ?

I aggree that the clones could enter this users classification...
After all if speccy does... they could too.
So a clone between Speccy and CPC464 (real one...)

What about the NecPC6601 too ? after all it as the same technical specs as a CPC... and may perhaps even be nearly compatible provided the right firmware/OS... (yet inferior to the CPC464 though... for CPCwiki purpose... ::) )

just a thing I noticed :
CPCWiki...
CPC-wiki
c-PCW-iki

We should perhaps also put more PCW content...

To me, PCW seems like a "pro CPC" with more RAM and disk drives and only a fixed full screen Mode2.... well not exactly but...

I can't understand why amstrad hasn't got them really compatible.
even a few Plus features like the sprites or a scroll could have been well used on the PCW... in order to get a good GUI experience...

HardSprite for icons or pointer...scrollings for a good scrolltext... :'(
And multicolour modes (Mode1...) because you know... colour printers existed.

You are describing:

PCW16!

or perhaps ANT.

minus the sprites ;)

The PCW was developed as a low-cost office solution for small businesses, so anything that didn't need to be implemented wasn't. The supplied printer was B&W and was never intended to be replaced with a fancy colour one (if you could afford a colour printer back then, you could afford a bigger/better computer). Games were never meant to run on it and GUIs were still a very new concept, which many (me included) were sceptical whether they would ever catch on.

cpc4eva

variation on current theme -

as you would expand your level of cpc'ness you would upgrade.....

usually starting with 464 with green screen + roland games

perhaps upgrades to 464 with dd-1 drive + dr destructo / budget game level status

then 6128 green screen + u.s. gold game status level

6128 colour screen with 3.5" drive + hewson / ocean game level status

as you go up you get a new add on for your cpc status and your games level increases too

no mention of speccy anywhere :)

Gryzor

Mmmmyeah.... guys, do keep in mind that there's a very short space up there for the designation!

AMSDOS

I disagree cause the PCW is certainally capable of games. While that maybe the case, it wasn't really meant to be intended as such and the few (arcade based) games are merely a showcase of what a PCW can produce!

A number of Graphical Adventures were also available for the PCW (in CP/M Plus) and it was even possible to take the games home and play them on your CPC6128!  ;D  So in that regard CPCs and PCWs shared a role together!  ;D
* Using the old Amstrad Languages :D * And create my own ;)
* Incorporating the Firmware :P
* I also like to problem solve code in BASIC :)   * And type-in Type-Ins! :D

yes it is capable, but unfortunately it has more ram to shift around than the cpc!
approx 25k for the screen.

The sound is very basic too (similar to the the spectrum beeper sound).

But it has more ram and disc to make up for it.

head over heels on the pcw is a nice game.
