Hello everyone.

I own an Amstrad CPC 6128. It's packaged in a closet at my parents' house. I used it the 80's to play some games, and to do some BASIC programming. I haven't used since about 1995, I think.

I recently have got an interest in CP/M, and I am thinking about resurrecting my CPC 6128, and attaching to it a 3'5" standard floppy drive, and running  CP/M and the vast library of CP/M programs that can nowadays be found in the Internet. Are vanilla CP/M programs readily compatible with a CPC 6128 ?

I hope I learn a lot from the experts in this forum!

Welcome to the CPCWiki!

I think text-based CP/M programs should work fine, but I'm not the right person to ask about it.

Maybe @GeoffB17 or @JohnElliott could shed a light here.

Cheers,
Rob

Hello,

Basically yes, any CP/M prog could be made to run on any CP/M machine, BUT...

Need to know more about your setup.

There might be problems with your disk space, the early PCW machines (with just the small A: drive) got away with a lot because there was always the RAM drive (M:)and even if this was small/unexpanded, it was still a second drive.

Much CP/M software will need some user configuring regarding screen codes ('terminal emulation').   I'm not sure what the 6128 counts as, but as this is normal for CP/M much software includes instructions for this.

CP/M covers a wide range of quite different machines, so some configuration is expected.   You might consider that an occasional bit of a struggle is part of the fun?

In the early days, a lot of software was released with the PCW version on one side of the disk, and the CPC version on the other.  Usually the wrong version still worked, but needed some extra fiddling with.

By all means come back with more specific questions.

Geoff

Welcome!

Oh yes the CPC6128 is great to run CP/M Plus. And also the Z3Plus system which has a great implementation for the CPC6128. (Z3Plus is more like Unix, named directories, shell-stack, wheel-byte, memorizes input commands and and and...).

In addition today there are implementations for hard-discs (Dobbertin HD20, Symbiface II, ...) too. Or you can work with RAM drive C: (444 KB) when adding a 512 KB RAM expansion to your CPC.

There are AbaloreOS, SymbOS and FutureOS a newer operating systems.

And there is a huge variety of cool new hardware for our beloved CPC!  :)

Welcome Darendo, so many cool new hardware for CPC - and you have a 6128, I'd recommend an M4 card to put it online and give it an SDCard / ROMBoard.

@GUNHED where is the Z3Plus system for CPC?

Well, I don't know if it was released to PD. If the creators still claim rights, then I can't put it into the net. But Google should help.

Just like almost every other CPC software on the net that nobody has "claimed" rights.

GUNHED

It's software for Z80 computers and I don't know if it's still sold or not. It was at least at a not so long ago time.
