Does anyone know if there's a complete archive of scanned WACCIs anywhere?

I think the problem is that Brian(possibly???) who was in charge of WACCI still saw it as a going concern for a long time (certainly throughout the csa8 days and possibly longer) and was reluctant to allow anyone to reproduce it as he was still selling back issues.

No idea if that's still the case or indeed whether he'd already have digital versions of them.

I think most of the late issues are already online, the issues I have are 85,103,104,105,139 & 140.I have a paper copy of 135 somewhere, though I see issues 82-87 & 107 are online as well.  :D

I used to subscribe to WACCI from issue 51 to about issue 90 something roughly. Unfortunately I sold them all, along with the first CPC 6128 that I had and my other hardware and software collection  :o :o  :doh:  :(

It's a decision that I regret and with hindsight, I wouldn't have made...

Personally thought that it was a great fanzine and I did contribute to it a few times. Would love it if somehow a group of us could scan as many issues of it as possible and put up an archive online somewhere.

They are issues 52 and 127. Quite far apart, I know. It makes me think I may have some of the inbetween issues hanging around somewhere; although given that I seem to have lost every cassette I've ever owned during one of my many house moves while at uni, it's quite possible these inbetween issues have disappeared the same way.


I'll scan them when I get some free time; which is probably going to be after the local elections (5th of May, for those who aren't well versed on UK politics).

Yeah I know what you mean about moving. I've done it 4 times since 2006 and two of those moves were only 2 years apart...  :o :o

I suppose we should ask for permission really. However I think that it's going to be hard to get in touch via email with Brian or anyone formally involved with WACCI in most cases, as Gryzor has already found out  :(


I used to be in touch with former editor John Bowley on a fairly regular basis. Unfortunately I haven't been in contact with him for a number of years now, so I don't if he still lives at the same address or whether he would remember me or not if I did try and get in contact with him again.

Richard Fairhurst was kind enough to get back to me very quickly, he gave me a couple of emails of other editors though he said he can't imagine why anyone would limit the effort. Still, I think it'd be nice to try and get as much approval as possible; indeed I can't imagine anyone would object, but this doesn't mean we shouldn't try and ascertain that...


Unfortunately, though, the hard part seems actually *getting* the issues. I'll try to dig up mine...

That's good news Gryzor. I tried to telephone John Bowley last night on the last known telephone number for him. Alas I was unsuccessful, as all I kept getting was a message say "the number that you have called has not been recognised". So it would appear that he has changed his number.

I am happy to help out with the scanning of issues if needs be.

Ok, I dug out my issues. Not too many:
86,87, 88, 89 (two copies for some reason),90,91,92,93, 94, 95, 96, 97,98, 99,100,101,102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 110, 112.


136-138 are online in HTML and 139-140 in PDF format.


Not a bad start... anyone else?

That's ok Gryzor. It would be nice to be able to get back in touch with John anyway if I could. The only other option would be to write to him I guess.


Sounds like you have a good collection of WACCI issues there. It would be good to see them online if at all possible. I wish that I didn't sell all mine off when I did  :(

Hi Gryzor. I can't seem to download the test scan of #86 from the link. Don't know if I am doing anything wrong or not? Also the page is in German, which doesn't help me, as I only speak English (Sorry).

I have also noticed that issues 82,83,84,85,86,87,103,104,105 and 107 are already on the CPC Wiki anyway. So out of the issues that you have, the following need to be scanned, once we have got permission: 88,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,98,99,100,101,102,106,108,110 and 112.

Stick a piece of black paper or card behind the page before you scan, it'll hide the faint image of the other side of the page. That'll help the download size as well, I'd think.

@CPC_fan : the file is there. I don't know why Uploaded is giving you the German version, but basically there are two big buttons on the page, the first (grey) one being the Free Download (30 seconds wait) and the second (blue) is for account holders.

I was wondering, what if we could find the original dtp files? Would it be possible to print out to a file and convert to pdf or images? Would it be worth it to ask any editors I locate?

Still seem to be having problems getting it to download on my main pc for some reason. Still it doesn't really matter anyway, as that issue is already online anyway.

Good to hear that Steve Williams has got back to you and given permission as well. With regard to the original dtp files. I know that a good number of issues were actually produced on a CPC using Protext, Prospell, Promerge and MicroDesign Plus. At one point I even had a replica of this set up, bar the printer that was used, with my original 6128, until I sold it off with all my other CPC stuff. I'm not sure if it would even be possible to print these out using a modern pc and then converting to a pdf or images? Come to that, I don't even know if the original files still exist or who might have them? Might be worth trying Paul Dwerryhouse or John Bowley, if anybody can get hold of them. Brain Watson might also be worth a try.

A black (opposite of white) card placed behind the page you're scanning will hide the faint image from the reverse side of the page. Because the scanner light is extremely bright, it shines through the paper, is reflected off the surface behind the page, and back through the paper to the image sensor. That little bit of extra light highlights the image on the other side of the page. If you put black paper behind it, then most of the light that gets through the paper is absorbed, and the reverse image is much less obvious.


This is a *very* well known scanning technique; try it before assuming I misunderstood something :)

I have a set of WACCI magazines from issue 1 onwards, it should be a full set, there may be one or two of the final issues missing. These can be delivered locally (East Midlands Area, England) or posted to an agreed location if it will help. I have no problem with any of the articles I wrote, or any of the magazines I produced being copied to, and distributed by an electronic format (or similar) for distribution to CPC enthusiasts. The only restriction, is as usual, these should not be used by commercial, for profit use.

There should be a complete set of the public domain software somewhere, there is probably a reference to it in one of the magazines. This software was, and still is public domain, and again it can be distributed freely, but not for profit.

I may be able to get some of the magazines transferred to electronic format, with a selection from PDF, TIFF, JPEG or XPS.

It would be nice to be able to remove the spelling, punctuation and context errors at the same time, but even with todays technology this is not practical.

I miss the early computers, they were fun, slow and clumsy, but who cares, they were fun.

Ok, I've uploaded the list. Suddenly things are looking much rosier.


Now we have to find who's willing to do some scanning. I can do it all myself, as I said before, but we should at least know and coordinate it - if someone has some and is willing to scan them, or lives near someone who has them and can do it, and so on.

They're generally very good; some are a bit faint but you can read them just fine. Some are tilted but I think all text is visible. Is the cover really page 2?

Everyone who, for SOME reason can't be bothered to wait 30 seconds to download a file or can't click a button:  . Going to delete it soon.

The 30 second delayed download didn't work for me either using Android with Firefox. These downloads usually works well from a PC, I didn't have access to nthat this time. Your new wacci cpcwiki link worked fine. Thank you

Wow - I never expected that we would hear from the great "Uncle Clive" Bellaby. It's great to hear from you and I for one really appreciate your offer of making available all the WACCI issues that you have. Would be interesting and good to know where all the former WACCI PD library is and if indeed it does still exist? Any ideas? Also great to hear from Peter Ceresole as well, especially with the number of issues that he has.

As I have said before, I am more than willing to help out with the scanning if needed. I could possibly pick up the issues that Peter has and scan them, as my parents live in Essex, not too far from London, so I could probably arrange to tie in getting them with a visit to them as well. I would pick Clive's issues up as well, but the East Midlands area is probably a bit far from me in Kent to do that  :(  Alternatively maybe Clive would be willing to post them out to me, for me to copy, if we can come to some sort of arrangement on the postage?

The ones I made. I didn't scan at 300dpi because it would make the scans huge, I scanned at a lower resolution so they could be read clearly on a screen and still downloaded quickly.

Hmm... Maybe it might be worth you sending me the email address that you have got for Clive, so that I can email him and see if I can arrange something directly with him? What do you think? I really don't want to miss the opportunity to get all the WACCI issues online if at all possible, especially as I did write some articles for it over a period of time.

The issues that I have got from Peter are as follows: 28, 31, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55, 56, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62 and 94. So as you can see, there is a lot of scanning to be done!  :o :o This will obviously take a fair amount of time, but I will give it my best shot.

Yes I would still like Clive's email address please Gryzor, as there is a small chance that I may be able to go and pick up all the issues that he has directly from him. Obviously I need to check that this is ok with him first.

Thanks for the offer of hosting them, much appreciated. I will take you up on it once I have started to scan the issues that I have got and I am sure that they have come out ok.

Got a reply back from Clive today to the email that I sent him late last night. Things are looking good so far. He is quite happy for me to email him and indeed wants me to email him back. So with a bit of luck and a few more emails, I should hopefully be able to sort something out for all the issues that are not currently available online. Please bear with me though, as it is not set in stone yet.

Also I wrote a letter to John Bowley yesterday and sent it to his last known address. Hopefully he will get it and be in touch with me soon. I think that only leaves Paul Dwerryhouse to find now and get his permission, or am I wrong?

There seems to be a little consternation going around about the legality of the archiving of electronically copied issues of WACCI. Just to set the record straight here is a copy of an email I have just sent to Gryzor (and I hope he doesn't mind me taking the liberty of posting it here before asking him - but I'm sure he'll forgive me.)

I just got off the phone after chatting with Philip DiRichleau and I was a) glad that you and he are in contact now and b) a little bit concerned about what he had to tell me about possible copyright infringement threats made against you by a certain third party.

For the record... I bought the company "WACCI" and all the ensuing rights to it back in back in 1988 from, its then owner, Jeff Walker. I was the sole owner and I ran it as an ongoing business for my personal profit.  I still own the name WACCI, the intellectual rights and the format of the magazine - to this day it is still my property - I never relinquished my ownership of the company known as WACCI.

In 1991 I had had enough of producing the magazine and "passed on" the right to continue produce the magazine using the name WACCI and the WACCI format to the newly established "WACCI Club" which had been organized, chiefly, by Uncle Clive Bellaby and several other interested WACCI magazine subscribers. The agreement was that WACCI would be run on a "club" basis (an entity which was wholly separate from my WACCI business) and that no one member of the club would financially benefit from the magazine. The WACCI club was owned and run by its members and its constitution specifically stated that any profits made would be ploughed back in to the running of the club.

Phil pointed out to me that recently a certain person - somehow involved with the WACCI club back in the day - may have (erroneously) inferred that he might be unhappy with your plan to set up an "official" online archive of the WACCI magazine because it may disrupt his (illegal) sales of back-issues of the magazine. I can assure you that no one apart from myself has the legal right to object to your proposed project - not only do I endorse it wholeheartedly but I am deeply humbled to think that after all these years anyone would even consider undertaking such a Herculean task.

To this day I am still the sole owner of all intellectual rights to the WACCI name and magazine format. No one else can disapprove or threaten legal action against you, your site or any of its members for going ahead with scanning and putting ALL the available issues of WACCI you can obtain.

I am sure that if you ask any of the subsequent Editors of the magazine (who are still alive), Clive, Phil, John, Dave et al.  would echo my sentiments.

In short - no one else apart from myself has the legal right to object to your archiving project and what is worse, no one should be still selling back-issues of the magazine (for what is obviously personal financial gain) so long after the WACCI club was officially dissolved. As the legal owner of the WACCI magazine I am quite happy for you to put ALL of the issues online.

Should any questions about this matter arise in the future I suggest you direct the questioner straight to me and my lawyer will be more than happy to answer them in full.

Oh nay nay and thrice nay Craig. Do not touch a hair upon any of my babies heads... they need to be viewed as they were originally sent out - warts, snotty noses and all. Part of the joy of reading WACCI was trying to spot the fluffs, boobs and goofs (or is it "gooves?) If you start to go around correcting, remixing and "air-brushing" the original magazines you'll remove some of the deeply deep joy you can get from reading them and going "I wonder how they did that effect back in the days before DTP???"

I am serious here... just scan them and post them up here as they were originally sent out in the Royal Mail - otherwise you'll just end up with a mess like McCartney did when he buggered around with the original Master Tapes of the "Let It Be" LP! Please don't try putting lipstick on a pig - even if it is your absolute favorite cutest Vietnamese pot-belly pig called Pretty Pink Pigella.... even the cutest pigs who get dressed in spandex, shades, a cool fedora and a tutu just end up looking ridiculous potential ingredients for a damn good bacon sandwich.

Don't go all George Lucas like on a deeply misguided Star Wars type trip - everyone actually wants to see the first print of Star Wars that came out in 1977 not the 120th "improvement" he churned out last week. So no OCRing, no spell-checking, no reformatting, no substituting Hi-res pics for the older chunky ones, no airbrushing over the reality - the great CPC unwashed need to be able to see the real article that WACCI subscribers paid good wonga to receive through their letterbox every month.

If the scan is of a page that has a crease in it... that's how the readers read it back in the day. Leave it in or scan a copy that doesn't have a crease.

I am not suggesting correcting or changing the layout at all. Just making the text content a searchable PDF like the AA digital versions are. They still look and feel like AA, including the famous blank spaces where titles should be and the "Which Wrod Processor" headline, but the text can be searched easily with acrobat reader ;)

Edit: by checking the text is right, I did not mean corrections, I meant making sure the digital version matched exactly the printed version, warts and all.

Hi Philip. That is so sad to hear about Paul and his wife Lesley. I did write some articles for Paul when he was editor of WACCI and was in contact with him on and off during that time. Unfortunately I lost contact with him with he gave up the editorship and didn't know that he had passed away.

In short - no one else apart from myself has the legal right to object to your archiving project and what is worse, no one should be still selling back-issues of the magazine (for what is obviously personal financial gain) so long after the WACCI club was officially dissolved. As the legal owner of the WACCI magazine I am quite happy for you to put ALL of the issues online.

Should any questions about this matter arise in the future I suggest you direct the questioner straight to me and my lawyer will be more than happy to answer them in full.

Hi Steve. First of all, many thanks for replying to Gryzor's original email to you and for joining this forum and posting an official reply here. I for one certainly appreciate it.

Also thank you very much for giving us your permission to scan any copies of WACCI issues that we can find, so that we can create an archive of them on here. It is very gracious and kind of you and I am sure will be appreciated by many people.

My plan is to scan all the issues that I got from Peter Ceresol and any that I get from Clive Bellaby, in 200 x 200 pdf and then with Gryzor's help, create an archive of them on the Cpc wiki. Please note that these will be straight scans of the actual pages directly from the magazines and they will not be spell checked etc, so they will be exactly as they were published. I hope that this is ok with yourself and everyone else?

Hi folks, I'm Sam/Wronskian from the csa8 days (I know Craig knows me, maybe not many others!) - the newsgroup, and the IRC channel for the years when that was still a thing!

I saw Craig's post over on csa8 and was about to offer to help Brian, as I only live a couple of miles from where he is (or at least was in 2014, which is the last reference I can find to him locally).
It sounds like you've got things resolved, though - and indeed may not want Brian to chip in now! So hopefully all sorted.

Welcome to the forum Sam. Yes I think that everything is resolved now. I think that Steve Williams confirmed everything that we needed to know in his couple of posts on here.

Just in case anybody was wondering, I am about to start the long process of scanning the issues that Peter Ceresole kindly lent to me. Will keep you all up to date with my progress as and when. I'm also hoping to get the missing issues that need scanning from Clive Bellaby, but I am waiting for him to confirm this.

By the way, does anyone know if John Bowley still lives in Peterborough? I wrote to him early last week, but I haven't had a reply yet.

Just a quick update. I am still working on scanning the almost full set of WACCI's that Clive Bellaby gave to me. So far I have scanned 8 issues. Unfortunately real life has got in the way a bit recently and progress has come to a halt. However I still intend to keep on scanning them. Hopefully I will be able to start the progress again shortly. Will update you all again when I have made some more progress.

Has there been any progress on scanning those back issues of WACCI that the late Uncle Clive passed along to us? I didn't want to appear pushy but it has been two years or more now...

Obviously I am anxious to see the early years of the publication (if only to read Peter Campbell's numerous crazy contributions to FAIR COMMENT about JOOLZ!) and read my many editorials that were written under pressure from a last-minute deadline.

It would also be sweet to see those old WoLi  (WACCIonLine)   articles to see if there were any lessons that could be learnt from Viewdata/Prestel/ViewTex on 1200/75 modem British Telecom usage to modern day internet use.

A little bit of history salvaged from the dark ages before we had the joys of internet invasion into our personal lives and way before everybody walked around like Zombies hooked into their not-so-Smartphones!

P.S. Anyone know what happened to the criminally infamous Keith Rose (of Keith Rose 500/500 modems?)

Scanning them is really easy and almost automatisable(?) when you have an A3 scanner with a top feeder and clip remover :) . Otherwise it's a pain.


A lot of them are missing thought. If some of you have more scans, please submit them there as well if possible :)

SevenT - there seems to be around 40 full magazine scans amongst the covers if you take a closer look. Check out the issues with a .pdf extension. I've just had an enjoyable half an hour perusing through several of them....

Indeed, the missing issues only have the cover, and a "Manquant" (missing) flag next to their name.
But starting from number 56 and especially around number 100 to 130, many are available (Those without the "Manquant" text next to them :) .


I recon there should be a filter of some sort to ease the navigation.

Those WACCIs on the wiki (issues 82-87, 103-105 and 107) were ones I scanned nearly 10 years ago :-)


They were done at 200 resolution and I now accept Gryzor's point in a thread around the time - "I think it's a shame to do half a job while you're a it and not do a high-res scan for archival purposes"...

I am sorry to have to be the one to report that the former Editor of WACCI and my good friend of over 38 years - Phillip DiRichleau - died last Wednesday the 24th January 2024. He died peacefully in hospital surrounded by his family.

i am deeply sorry to hear this.
Sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
As editor of WACCI Phillip was one of the guys keeping the "CPC scene" alive when it was continually shrinking.

Issue 95 is already scanned in not too bad quality, but I can always redo it :
