Although I only owned a ZX Spectrum during the 8 bit days I never really looked about at other computers. I thought the ZX Spectrum was the be all and end all of my world.

I still love the Spectrum but of late I have been looking about at other machines and today I tried WinAPE and have fallen in love with the Amstrad CPC.

It seems to have better colour than the C64 and also a higher resolution to really make it shine. I have only played a handfull of games like Exolon, Alien 8 (Which i hated all Ultimate games until now), Agent X II and a few others.

Its made me think about buying one and starting my own collection it really is that good.

Is there any thing I should look out for to buy as i might be getting a 464 with a mp1 modulator very soon.

Hello, and welcome to the forum!

I think the hottest you can get CPC-wise would be a CPC6128 with a 3.5" drive (either internal or external, external better if you still want to use 3" disks or don't want to change the physical aspect of the machine).

That should be enough to play almost everything including the latest productions.

By the way, is your nick related to Hero Quest by any chance?  ;D

welcome!

a 464 is ok and you can still play may things with it, 6128 is the best to run all the latest demos/games.

Yeah I used to play a lot of the board game when it first came out and it seems my friends liked me as the person that controled the bad guys lol

Look to get Bryce's svideo adapter or a SCART lead (results vary between TVs) - the picture quality on the modulators is pretty bad!

If you use an LCD TV, then some of the smooth horizontal scrolling techniques might be jumpy as these all rely on the specific timing that work on the original monitor or CRT TVs but not on most LCD TVs. Things are still playable, but jerkier. If you can find a monitor on ebay that's for pickup near you, it'd definitely be worth picking one up if you don't have an old CRT TV.

Finally, whilst I personally prefer the 464 to 6128 because it has more nostalgia for me, arnoldemu is right that a 6128 might be a better choice. For old games, either will be fine, but the extra memory and disk give you more flexibility. That said, 464s can be picked up for £10 on ebay, but a 6128 is more like £40+.

I am going to use a CRT TV as i do with all my retro stuff. I cannot stand LCD/HD TV's for old skool systems as it makes them look like crud.

I will get a 6128 later on but to dip my toes into the CPC world the 464 will be more than enough for me. Along with the 464 I am getting a C64C all in the same week and I am going to start a kind of preservation thing with the data on tapes for both systems.

If people then want it I can supply it on DVD for a small fee as i dont want t make anything but cover the costs.
