Hi, got a CPC464 off ebay as part of a bigger bundle.  I knew it didn't work so I thought i'd have a go at fixing it.

The computer boots ok but goes on to type '93RUN" 781200" on the command line, obviously tries to enter it and comes up with Syntax Error. The keyboard is unresposive.

Another forum suggested I change the AY sound chip which I did but I still have the same problem.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Andy.

If you check the socket, remove the keyboard and boot without it and still gives you that then as bryce will say it is the sound chip.

Almost correct :) There are two types of the AY available if you have used the wrong type you could still have problems and you'd need to add the pull-up resistors. Also, have you had a joystick connected to the CPC at the time or does this also happen with no joystick attached?
However, I suspect if just dirt on the membrane, you probably just need to give it a clean.

No joystick was attached and it still does it with the keyboard disconnected.

Think it's probably going to have to sit on the 'For Parts' pile.

Then you most likely have the wrong type of AY installed. You just need to swap it for the correct type.

My heart breaks when I read the word "parts"  :'(
