Title: Floppy Drive Unit
Post by: centrespot on 21:29, 13 March 23
I have an EME-232 3" floppy drive fitted in my Amstrad PCW9256 and it's not reading disks.

I've replaced the belt and cleaned the heads.

The motor turns and the head carriage moves and searches back and forth and the drives LED lights up, the computer screen pulses light/dark while this is happening. Then the computer beeps several times to confirm failure to read the disks.

I could do with some advice from someone experienced with the Amstrad drives on how to get it to work properly.

Thanks in advance

Did you use a bootable system disc? And can you verify it with another computer?

Yes to both

Yes, then the problem is more severe. Of course it would be the best to test the drive in another computer. Maybe the head is not aligned properly. Small chance is to try different system disc - different means to be formatted on different drives. One could work.

Try to format a disk and read it: if it works then you have to calibrate track 0, RPM etc...

And how exactly does he format a disk in a system that can't be booted?

Bryce.
