Hi,

I'm thinking of purchasing the HXC, I see there are a few variants - are they all pretty much the same in use?
Or, is there one in particular that anyone would recommend for the CPC?

Site:
https://lotharek.pl/products.php?id=11

I plan on using it to look at/record various demos etc.

Any info would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Peter

I don't own one, but wow, I had no idea they were that expensive!! Do they provide anything over a regular Gotex at a less 1/10th of the price?

For a Gotek-like experience, but more integrated in the Amstrad, I like Pyotr floppy disk emulator that plugs in the expansion port without any cables and runs around 40€ I think.

Hi Peter

The gotek is the way to go cost effective, supported by Keir at FlashFloppy, Jeff at HXC, you can have on screen (cpc Monitor) Display Oleds etc.

Good luck

You can't compare the prices of a device that is home-brew development from one of our own users and built by a hobbiest with a Gotek which is a chinese mass-produced device with no support from the producer (Kier and Jeff are not the developer or manufacturer, they just support it because Gotek doesn't). As for support from Pyotr, no comment.

The SD-Card-HXC supports HFE-Files, the USB supports HFE- and DSK-Files.
Do you like to have an Case / LCD?

ComSoft6128

Thanks for all the replies.

@SOS - DSK files and it will be used as drive B on a 6128 Plus so cased.

Sure you can! But it's good to mention the difference in production like you did. Any actual funcional advantages to the Lotharek's one?

As for Pyotr's support, I know it has a bad reputation here, but he's only been great with me. One of the floppy emulators I bought from him a while ago wasn't working correctly and he sent me a new one without a problem.

Bryce

As Jeff now offers his software for the Gotek, I don't think there are any functional differences anymore, other than the fact that one uses an SD Card and the other uses a USB stick.

Bryce.

ComSoft6128

Mmm.

So now the Gotek looks like an option again.
Is there anyone here that sells the complete package ready to "Plug & Play"?

Cheers,

Peter

Bryce.
And i would add that you can't compare a producer playing legal on all aspects (IRS, having a legal status, paying all the taxes, not importing non-CE hardware from china and providing real invoices to its customers)  with all these ebay resellers doing this without any legal status.
Sure that if you don't pay the taxes in your "business", and not playing legal, you can easily do "low cost" ;)

@ComSoft6128 : If you take the "the ready to use"  Gotek way, take one it with the HxC firmware. This way i can support you.
Otherwise get it unflashed and flash it yourself. You shouldn't pay more than ~15$ for the bare hardware (This is the price on alibaba.), especially if there is no adding value... i mean, don't feed ebay resellers if there is no support provided nor contribution to the firmware and tools developer...

What's about using DSK files on the HxC?
http://futureos.de --> Get the revolutionary FutureOS (Update: 2023.11.30)
http://futureos.cpc-live.com/files/LambdaSpeak_RSX_by_TFM.zip --> Get the RSX-ROM for LambdaSpeak :-) (Updated: 2021.12.26)

Bryce

As I don't own a Gotek, I wasn't sure whether Jeffs software offers direct DSK reading or not. If the Gotek doesn't do this, even with Jeffs software, then that's a (major) difference between the devices.

Yes, and it would be REALLY great to implement this feature for the HxC too.  ;)

The Gotek can use DSK's (i think it does not depend on the Firmware - FlashFloppy/HXC).
The USB-HXC can use DSK's too, only the SD-HXC can't use DSK's.
I saw some years ago, an Information from Jeff, that look, that DSK's will never implemented on the SD-HXC.
His info looks like, that this was previously done (or only concepted) - but causes (will cause) troubles in industial environments.
So this feature-requst look like "closed forever."
(i hope, i remembered correctly, but i think so)

Somehow it makes no sense, why should it make troubles with SD card, but not with USB? Need to find out...

The Answer must be:
Who bought previously as Industrial-Customer the SD-Card-Emulator?

Bryce

I think it was more of RAM issue. The SD card version has possibly less RAM available to do this?
