Title: Ideal screen for the CPC?
Post by: retro space on 09:58, 12 July 24
Just ran into this TV. Is this the ideal CPC display? It looks pretty great for 80 character display, yet not too big with 40cm tube.
Also it does do stereo.(https://retrospace.nl/images/sonyw16.jpg)

That looks quite good. On an Amstrad CTM I personally think 80 columns is painful.

But generally speaking "ideal monitor" is a very personal thing.

I only use CRTs for demos and games (CTM, PVM and 1084s each having various shortcomings). They can't beat a modern panel via RGBtoHDMI (or OSSC if you like) for serious (or monkey) business.

I do not agree to that, except maybe for a Plasma, as those had SCART RGB with a wicked IQ. Anything LCD does not come close. Maybe OLED can work, but you don't want a too big screen, I think 20" is the max.
If you make hours on programming, you better do that in emulation.

That part, I agree.

imho, the screen is too big in width. Also the boarder area seems to be a bit too small.

However, a picture from the real CTM644 (containing well caps - new or old) would serve as good comparison.

A Trinitron is always a good choice. Anyway, I use a multi-sync hi-res industrial CRT monitor which gives crystal clear mode 2 too and it's compatible with all the 15Khz and 31Khz modes. The model is Microvitec 17VD4QAS.

I use it with both Amstrad and MiSTer FPGA, where I can run all the systems with direct RGB output. The drawback of this monitor is that it's quite big and heavy, so it's hard to rotate it for vertical games, but maybe one day I'll make a rotating stand for it.

Trinitrons (all I tested) had problems with R3 scrolling. The problems can be alleviated, but not eliminated sadly. However, great tubes for programming.
