Malfunctioning C4CPC

I just recognised that my C4CPC seems to no longer behave properly.

It often crashes during navigation (usually going one folder up) and some games crash during game or just won't load at all.

E.g. Pang and Batman work fine. Switchblade will load but immediately has graphics issues and won't let me play it - or just for a few screens before it crashes. GnG GX4000 won't load at all. Also some homebrew GX4000 games won't load at all. Disk conversions don't work at all. Not even Oh Mummy!

I tested it on a Plus 6128 and a GX4000 and in both cases it's similar. I've cleaned the contacts already but no change.

I have not yet updated the firmware (1.2) as I don't want to risk to brick it if something is wrong. Not sure if I should try that.

As some GX4000 games work flawlessly my suspicion would be that stuff above 128K fails.

Is there any test I could run to verify the ROM(static RAM) of the C4CPC? Any ideas what I can test or do to fix this?

update: 1.2 is CPRselect not the firmware. I don't know what firmware I have.

not sure it will help buy have tried with another Sd card? i got exactly similar issue with my rasperry and it was a switch off that killed it.

eto

Yes, I tried with a different SD card. No difference.

I now copied CPRSelect 1.4 to the SD Card in folder 1 - and selected the DIP switch for folder 1. But the C4CPC still started in Folder F where CPRSelect 1.2 still was. It displayed "1" as the selected directory but the contents of the directory where those of F.

Then - after turning it off an on again, the DIP switches worked - and with CPR Select 1.4 I could run all games as intended.

And now ... it's back to the situation that it doesn't matter what I do with the DIP switches. I e.g. select the DIP switch for "3" and it shows  "3" as the directory name but again shows the contents of F.

Which PSU are you using to power it all up?

eto

Attached a few screenshots as I guess it's not totally obvious what I mean...

I have saved Ghosts'n Goblins CPR in folder 2 and CPR Select with lots of further folders is in F. I have jumpered the C4CPC to 2, so I would expect it will start the first CPR it finds in folder 2.

What happens now is:

It always starts from folder F and loads CPR Select from there. CPR select says it would be in folder 2 but shows the contents from F. When I navigate manually to 2 or F I can see the true contents and can select them.

Whatever DIP setting I select, it always starts from F.

I have tried these

  • GX4000 with 5V, 1A
  • GX4000 with 12V, 750mA
  • GX4000 with 12V 2200mA
  • Plus 6128 with 5V, 4A

No change.

Interesting behaviour  :o
Are the picture taken on a Plus / GX4000 ?
If so, I am a bit puzzled as it's the regular CPC color map instaead of the Plus one.
If you can ship me the C4CPC, I can have a look.

It happens on both, Plus and GX4000.

I downloaded CPRSelect 1.4 somewhere from this forum and just recognised that if I use another file from the CPCRulez forum it has the Plus colour map. Is there an "official" download site for CPRSelect?

Well, I did not do an official release as such  :D
I only posted a updated version of the 1.2 that is working on a regular CPC with abalore plus2cpc and posted them in the relevant topic.
But I know that there is at least 2 versions of the 1.4 which only differ by not disabling ASIC ram mapping while on CPC (which should not make a difference)

eto

turns out it was a problem with the SDcard  :picard:

I don't know what happened but after I replaced the SD card with one form another C4CPC that I had access to, the "malfunctioning" C4CPC behaves exactly like expected.

Altering the DIP switches needs the removal of the cartridge from 6128plus / GX4000.  :)

when the Plus is off?

Depends if you have a 'special' power supply. But I'm glad to see that you fixed your problem and the new SD card setup works for you!  :) :) :)
