Hello, I wonder if I might be able to pick your brains on a bit of a head scratcher I have with my CPC464?

I have been using my CPC404 quite happily for some with with my CTM 644-2 powering it with no problems. Recently I got myself an Amstrad MP-2 supply with a vew to try a different monitor. The problem is that for some paranormal the CPC464 does not turn on when using the MP-2.

So the obvious answer is that it is a faulty supply right? Well I have tested the supply with a multi meter and it outputs the correct 5v output. I have also tried using a 3rd party non Amstrad supply that I know works OK and it will also not power the CPC464. The only things that works is the supply built in to the CTM 644-2 monitor.

This seems very odd to me, can anyone advise?

Many thanks.

Multimeter doesn't test for load. The MP2 was a rubbish design to start with so 30 years on I wouldn't touch one with a sanitised barge pole. All those cheap caps inside are probably on their last legs.

Get a proper PSU from RS or another reputable supplier that is rated to 2.5 amps (gives you some headroom). All my PSU's come from RS and are modern switched mode units with over voltage protection etc. Not the cheapest but certainly the best.

As for your own 3rd party PSU I have to assume it can't deliver the 2 amps the 464 requires.

Thanks for the reply, I really should have said that the MP2 powers up another cpc464 fine

Is this with video connection on the MP2 connected or not. There was a previous thread CPC464 works with monitor but no power with TV kit with a similar issue.

I suspect the ground connection on the 464 power input is broken.

Ah OK thanks for that, yes it is with the video connected, I will have a read through of that thread, many thanks once again.
