Hello

Was wondering if I am on the right track.  My 6128 that I brought back to life shows phantom keys on boot.  It does the same without the keyboard installed.  Read a few people having this issue and it was suggested by Bryce et. al. to do the folllowing here https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/6128-phantom-key-input-at-boot-up/ and here https://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/amstrad-cpc-hardware/cpc464-keyboard-issue/ :

1 - Check what happens when you turn on the CPC with no keyboard attached (mine still has phantom keys)
2 - If the problem still occurs with the keyboard disconnected, swap the AY-3-8912 (I will order a couple from Aliexpress - if others have reputable seller to recommend do let me know)
3 - Check that there's no loose wire / screw or anything under the PCB that is causing a short circuit. (Nothing loose)
4 - Check the capacitors associated with the three ICs. These are the small brownish discs at the end of each IC:
     C128 for the 74LS145 (IC101 and C101)
     C124 for the AY-3-8912 (IC102)
     C119 for the 8255 (IC107 and C107)

Can I replace these with cylinder electrolytic caps?  or should they be same type.

5 - If you still haven't found the problem, swap the 74LS145.

Was wishing to socket the above 3 chips and some of the RAM chips - two RAM chips identified as bad thanks to Noels Retrolab program.  Does anyone have any sources for appropriate sizes for these?  Residing in Australia at moment.

After the phantom keys issue is resolved, I will need to work of the disc drive which can read but not write :(

what keys do you press by themselves?

Provide all the ones that are not repeated, preferably with the keyboard disconnected

which columns from 7 to 0 are these characters from?

The characters printed are "2BCNM/\ on bootup.  Based on the keyboard check that is column 6 and 1.
They seem to be printed in capitals too so maybe that includes the shift key or caps key.

All of this is with/out the keyboard attached.  I dont need to press anything.

Noels Retrolab program shows the bottom two RAM chips on the right as faulty so would that be related?  I will be replacing them soon after some research on good suppliers.

Any advice appreciated.

Bryce

I'd swap the RAM's first. It is likely that the bad RAM's are causing wrong commands to be sent to the CPU.

Bryce.

Thank you.  I will replace the two with sockets also and report back.

Maybe try second bank first.
