Title: ChinnyVision: Head Over Heels
Post by: chinnyhill10 on 12:03, 20 May 16
Best version! Enough said?

Big thanks to Robcfg for the PCW footage. I was struggling with that one and I thought it was important to show a quick clip even if it was emulation.

Never really got into this title, but damn it looks cute on the CPC :) The ST isn't half bad either, though I wonder why it's not any faster...

Really enjoyed this game.  Beautifully detailed and a big fan of isomeric on the CPC.   Batman another great isometric.

Wish they made a sequel :)

Someone could port Monster Max over from the Gameboy.

Great review!

HoH is indeed one of the best games of all time for me. Maybe a bit too long, but awesome all the way to the end  8)

I imagine that with a Multiface it would make the game easier if you save stated it every so often. Come to think of it I should have used my Multiface clone which I keep forgetting to use!

This is definitely another one for the bucket list, although Isometric graphic adventures was never really my thing.
However I do feel i'd be doing the CPC a grave injustice if I don't at least give this one a try.

@chinnyhill10 (http://www.cpcwiki.eu/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=984)  Nice video again, enjoyed that.  :)

I didn't realise there was things missing / changed in different versions, shame the amiga got a cut down port.

The GX4000 cpr needs you to select controls before you start, this is a good option to have, however If anyone thinks of a good setup by default, then I can change it to those controls  ;)

Remember at some parts of the game it is essential to use jump and carry together, so need to leave at least one key defined as both.

This was always a game I liked to load up and play for a bit but I always found too annoying to actually try get even halfway through.  I just wasn't a fan of the isometric type but yeah the CPC version is the best all-rounder and the game itself was presented very nicely with skillfully drawn clear sprites and fun sound effects and jingles.   Very well made but not a game I'd ever consider a fave of mine.

Really enjoyed that.

I felt pretty sure you could move the enemies around on the CPC version. Maybe I was wrong... will have to check.

Edit: yes you definitely can move those guys around using objects on the 8 bitters, because this is how you get the safari crown!

BTW, the dogs that Heels can use as steps etc but disappear when Heads comes in are hush puppies. We used to think that they were scared/shy of Heads, I can't remember what the manual actually said.

Many of Head's species mistook them for Heels, attempting to join up with them. So they evolved a defense mechanism to temporarily disappear whenever one is close.

Or something to that effect.

I have always had a respect for this game and loved the graphics the game on the Amstrad is the definitive 8bit version imo , it looks and plays great , slowdown is virtually non existent . I fired it up today to give it a go, as it is not my type of game.Iso games tend to bore me .I think it is the furthest I have ever reached  in the game(I do not use cheat modes, personally find they ruin the game enjoyment) I actually managed to link the two of them up , which I can't recall ever doing. Found the experience pretty enjoyable .So thumbs up for longevity .

It's basically a trick to ensure you separate the two of them out by forcing Heels to take one route and Head the other.

By the way you ask if there are still isometric adventure games being made like this and there's one out today on PS4 (and already out on PC I presume) called Lumo.  It's got 3D graphics but very much in the style of gameplay as these old ones.

Yup, much like the "ladder" climbing technique (that the game helps you practice in the first screen) which is used for Head only routes.

It's a cute backstory though.

You know what, it had never occurred to me that the 'ladder' was on the start screen for that very reason. Doh!  :picard:
